Stirling is a small city in central Scotland, famous for its medieval castle and well-preserved Old Town. Granted city status during the Queen’s Jubilee in 2002, it’s also one of the UK’s youngest cities. Stirling is home to the University of Stirling, founded in 1967.

What’s it like to study a Masters in Stirling?

Stirling occupies an important place in Scottish history, having been the location of many bloody battles over the centuries. Its position between Glasgow and Edinburgh, along the traditional border between the Highland and Lowland regions, gave it a strategic significance worth fighting for. William Wallace and Robert the Bruce both fought the English army in and around Stirling, with the latter gaining control of Stirling Castle after the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

For the next few centuries, Stirling shared capital status with Edinburgh but lost this significance after the English and Scottish monarchies were combined in 1603.

You can explore Stirling’s rich history throughout the town and surrounding area. The impressive castle still looms over Stirling, featuring an excellent selection of exhibitions and artefacts. Just outside Stirling is the National Wallace Monument, a strikingly Gothic, Victorian-era tower that pays tribute to the iconic medieval military leader / freedom fighter William Wallace (later immortalised as the protagonist of Braveheart). Meanwhile, the Bannockburn Visitor Centre tells the story of the pivotal Battle of Bannockburn using a 3D audio-visual experience.

Stirling is less than an hour away from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, offering postgraduates easy access to the world-class cultural riches of the two largest cities in Scotland.

Student accommodation in Stirling includes a variety of options, from on-campus residences to off-campus housing in Stirling and the nearby town of Bridge of Allan.
