The course enables you to

We offer a first-class suite of research and teaching laboratories alongside excellent facilities offered by our partnership venue at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield. Our laboratories are all British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) accredited.

Many of the teaching staff support elite athletes as part of their work and undertake research in sport and exercise. We benefit from the expertise of our staff in the Centre for Sport and Exercise Science (CSES). The team for sport performance have worked successfully with athletes competing at the Olympics, Paralympics, and Winter Olympics. They have provided, or are currently providing, sport science research and consultancy services at elite level for the • Amateur Boxing Association • Amateur Swimming Association (diving and swimming) • British Cycling • British Speed Skating Association • British Skeleton-Bob Team • English Bowls Association • English Golf Union • Royal Yachting Association • GB table tennis • GB volleyball.

You benefit from CSES' activities as they allow us to keep course content at the cutting edge, based on our knowledge and experience of sport and exercise science delivery. You can also benefit from a work-based learning programme to help develop your experience of working in multidisciplinary teams, supporting athletes and coaches.

During the course you use a mix of traditional and online learning resources to ensure the course is flexible and can fit in with your existing commitments.

Sport scientists

Sport scientists support athletes or sports clubs, they generally provide advice and support, designed to monitor and improve sport performance, alongside a team of specialists including coaches, psychologist, performance managers and medical staff. Areas of expertise include • strength and conditioning • physiology • nutrition and analysis of movement and tactical performance.

Exercise scientists

Exercise scientists are more concerned with improving a person's health and helping them recover from illness through a structured programme of physical activity and other health-based interventions. They are also involved with preventative treatments and work closely with GPs and primary care trusts or private healthcare organisations. Exercise scientists might be employed by local authorities to run community based health and exercise initiatives.

It may be possible to move into a particular clinical area, such as cardiology, or work as a health promotion specialist for a local authority or healthcare trust. Our close links with the National Centre for Sport and Exercise medicine, part of which is based in Sheffield, will provide additional opportunities to those wishing to pursue careers in this area.

The socio-cultural study of sport has become ever more significant. Drawing upon two major areas of study within the socio-cultural study of sport, this degree focuses upon the sociology and ethics (philosophy) of sport, distinguishing this from other socio-cultural related sport programmes. The course content is informed by current and innovative research and has been praised for its scope and flexibility in assessment that allows students to pursue and develop individual interests. In most cases students' crafting of these ideas are applied to future career aspirations.

Our research spans the areas of, science, technology, health and medicine applied to sport, exercise and health settings with children, older people, clinical groups and elite international sports people. Importantly, sport and exercise science research is applied in nature and populates teaching, third mission activities and work-related learning opportunities. It has impact on elite sport, students, industry, patients and the general public.

MSc by Research in Sports Science typically lasts one year full-time, two to three years part-time. This is an individual research project written up in a thesis of 30,000 words.

Research

Sport and exercise science research occurs within the world-leading Applied Sports Technology Exercise Medicine (A-STEM) Research Centre.

Significant research in diabetes and health as well as sedentary behaviour, physical activity, fitness, fundamental movement skills in childhood obesity is undertaken by a number of clinical exercise science staff.

Our elite sport performance group is leading a project supported by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government to position Wales at the forefront of Science, Technology and Medicine in elite sport and to promote its wider application in health and education. This project represents a unique collaboration of leading Welsh academics, businesses and sport, with the overall objective of enhancing their respective performances.

Fundamental links integrating engineering and sport and exercise science research are being developed by the Sports Visualisation Group who analyse video material to rapidly produce data for immediate analysis of sports performance. Recently the Engineering Behaviour Analytics in Sport and Exercise (E-BASE) research group was set up to investigate the use of advanced sensor and processing technology to quantify training and activity in sport and clinical populations respectively.

We have international research links and projects with universities in Southern and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USE, Italy and Austria.

The programme gives you the opportunity to critically examine the theoretical bases of science in understanding sport and exercise, the assessment methods and their practical application within physiology, psychology and biomechanics.

This programme will enable you to gain a critical appreciation of a multi-disciplinary approach to contemporary issues in sport and exercise science, along with the assessment of performance and support for the exerciser and athlete. You will have the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art equipment in the laboratories. Some of the techniques include modified ELISA’s, Real-Time PCR, Western Blot, isotope methodology for metabolism, 2-3D motion analysis using MaxTRAQ and Vicon, force analysis using Kistler force plates and isokinetic dynamometers, muscle ultrasound, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

The key modules on this course revolve around you producing a high-level independent research project, which will prepare you for higher levels of research and study.

The course begins with a research methods module which will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of different approaches to research, allowing you to choose the correct method for your project, depending on your specific area of interest. You will study key philosophical questions as to the nature of science and knowledge, and develop a critical awareness of the principles and practice of qualitative and quantitative approaches and techniques. You will also be introduced to the management of ethical issues associated with collecting and analysing data on human participants. 

You will also be guided on the development of your research proposal, and be invited to attend the Sport Science Seminars Series to frame your understanding of current sport-related research.

The MSc Sport Physiotherapy and Exercise Medicine at Middlesex has been created specifically for Chartered Physiotherapists who wish to follow a sports career path, giving you the qualifications and experience necessary to apply for accreditation with the Association of Sports Physiotherapists in Sport and Exercise Medicine (ACPSEM) and International Federation of Sports Physiotherapists (IFSPT).

Middlesex is widely regarded as one of the best universities in the UK to study sport. The London Sports Institute at Middlesex University is based at Saracens RFC's Allianz Park, where we regularly treat elite athletes in our high-tech biomechanics and physiology labs and new rehabilitation suite. This gives you the opportunity to carry out a research project on a subject of your choice alongside professional physiologists, biomechanists and clinicians.

Our masters degree is one of a few in the UK to build clinical placements into the course. Students spend 150 hours over the duration of the course working on clinical placement in a sports environment. Some of these hours can be at your place of work if appropriate, however we can offer hours in our own London Sport Institute Sport Injuries Clinic supervised by clinicians who work with athletes at national and international levels.

We also have links with professional sports teams where clinical hours can be carried out, such as Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers, Arsenal, Saracens, Wasps, Harrow School and England Rugby. This means you complete your masters degreewith significant experience in professional sport, often within an MDT setting. In addition to this, you will obtain the requisite qualifications for ACPSEM and IFSPT accreditation – putting you in a great position to begin a career in sport.

The course can be studied full-time or part-time to fit around existing work commitments, and is taught by clinicians who have significant experience working with national and international sporting organisations. You will also study pitchside trauma treatment with Rugby Football Union trauma doctors and teaching staff, gaining a Level 2 Immediate Care qualification as standard with the possibility of continuing to Level 3 at an additional cost.

Course summary

Our programme equips you for a career in sport, exercise and clinical biomechanics. You will gain in-depth knowledge into how theoretical biomechanics can be applied to the understanding and development of movement for sport, exercise and clinical applications.

Our MSc in Biomechanics will enable you to support the physical development and health of sports people engaged in intensive training and exercise. This programme critically examines the theoretical basis of methods of assessment and the practical application of data within biomechanics. It offers you a means of studying biomechanics from a discipline-specific standpoint. 

You will be taught by staff who are committed to pursue excellence in the field of sport, exercise and health sciences and have achieved a high level of expertise within their profession.

The Sport and Exercise Research Centre houses one of the best sport science laboratory facilities in London. You will have access to our biomechanics laboratory and physiology laboratory during your study here.

You will be able to collaborate with our members of the Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre engaged in range of multidisciplinary research themes including: Neuromusculoskeletal Function through the Ages; Extreme Environments; Amputee Mobility; Performance and Well-Being; and Exercise Adherence and Health.

Roehampton has over twenty-five years' experience of teaching Sport Science and has run Masters level Sport Science programmes since 1997. Over this time, we have constantly embraced changes in the profession and utilised student feedback to ensure that our programmes are relevant, inspiring and provided to the high standards.

Content

You will study modules that provide both the theory and hands-on application in areas such as biomechanical assessment/support techniques, neuromuscular function, and biomechanics of gait. The teaching in these modules is both in-depth and highly practical, with extensive use of laboratory facilities such as Vicon 3D motion capture system, 2D video analysis, Kistler force plates, isokinetic dynamometers, ultrasound scanners, electromyography, and neuromuscular electrical stimulator.

You will also have the opportunity to gain two weeks work placement in gait laboratories of Guys and St Thomas’s Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital. Through this placement our previous graduates have developed their clinical gait analysis skills and have enhanced their employability within the field of Biomechanics.

In your research dissertation, you will have the opportunity to perform focused research in a project to be developed with our staff member with the view for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
