Recognising that sport managers operate in a highly politicised environment, the programme reviews the role of government policy in shaping sporting opportunities and sport’s contribution to social policy agendas.
The programme critically assesses sport’s contribution to government social policy concerns (such as crime prevention, health improvement, education attainment, community building), and its role in conflict resolution, gender empowerment, disease prevention and poverty reduction in different parts of the world. It critically analyses a wide range of sport policy and sport management issues in the UK and compares these with experiences across a wide range of countries.
You will focus on management issues in contemporary sport organisations, the media’s role in sport management debates, and sport marketing and communications concepts.
The programme also explores fundamental aspects of research methods and links these to sport management concerns. Your understanding is enhanced through the extensive involvement of local and national sport organisations.

Your studies are made up of eight assessed modules, which include an industry-based research project in which you work with sport organisations to develop solutions to problems or explore potential market opportunities. The course is made up of eight core modules, plus a research or work-based learning project. Modules provide a broad grounding across management disciplines in sport business. Before you start the course, we supply you with an induction pack that includes a reading list to introduce you to the general management and specialist modules. We also run an induction programme to prepare you for the course.
During the induction we assess your existing study, IT and language (for international students) skills. This assessment leads to an individual learning plan to improve and develop your skills. We also provide language tuition as needed, if your first language is not English. Dissertation workshops help you to prepare for your dissertation.

The MSc Sport Management course is offered on both a full-time and part-time basis. The full-time route has a one year duration and the part-time route is studied over two years, both starting in the Autumn Semester (September).
The modules on the course will provide students with a thorough grounding in general business and management principles as well as the specifics relating to the area of sports management. Students begin the course by studying towards the Postgraduate Diploma. On successful completion of this they progress onto the full Master's qualification.
An internship forms an essential part of this course. Students work alongside an employer in semester 3 which allows them to gain some good work experience to further apply and contextualise skill sand develop their CVs. This internship also forms the basis of the final assessment on the course - the Management Project.
Students have worked in local sport goods manufacturers and clothing organisations such as Ecco and Adidas as well as with sports clubs, teams and organisations such as the Belfast Giants, Ulster Rugby and the IFA.
There are a variety of careers available to graduates of the course. Many students take up roles within the sports industry, for example in consultancy, marketing or administration. Other graduates have made use of the more generic business and management skills that are taught on the course to gain employment with organisations such as Apple.
Many students use the opportunity of their internship to build links with employers. Over the past few years students have worked for organisations such as the Belfast Giants, Ulster Sports Academy, Sport Ireland, Adidas, Ecco and the IFA, for example.
