The programme explores the impact and influence religion and belief has on social structures, community, politics, economics, policy (education), citizenship, culture & identity, sexuality, pluralism, spirituality, and national & international relationships. The MA also introduces critical analysis of ethics, systems of belief, human rights and social justice issues and the application of these concepts within lived environments from diverse religious perspectives.

The programme is of interest to both graduates and practitioners who wish to specialise further in Religion, Culture & Society. Graduates may wish to extend their knowledge to prepare for academic and professional careers in the private or public sector.

The RCS team at UCLan have a wide variety of links with local, national and international faith and intercultural forums, faith schools and academic institutions, all of which provide valuable contacts for students wishing to enter professions related to Teaching, Ministry, inter-faith and inter-cultural dialogue and relations. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Students may study the MA full time over one year or part time over two or three years. In either case students will be required to successfully complete six MA modules and one MA dissertation (the dissertation is equivalent to 3 x modules). Each module requires an estimated 2 hours class contact per week plus extensive reading and dedicated personal study.

We strive to give our students key employability and transferable skills which will serve them in the world of work. Our assessment practices illustrate a move away from exams and essays per se and incorporate a move towards a more inclusive assessment which benefits our diverse student body. Assessment strategies include coursework, individual and group presentations, individual and/or group projects, reviews and ICT interaction.

OPPORTUNITIES

Religion, Culture & Society (RCS) also includes field trips to national and international places of interest such as; Rome, Istanbul, Auschwitz, Liverpool Cathedrals, Ladywelle Pilgrimage and Shrine, the Hindu Temple etc. Although these trips are optional to MA students, they aim to draw attention to shared values, beliefs and practices, and supports students in achieving a mutual appreciation of different faiths and traditions. The international trips in particular aim to develop an experienced awareness of cultural heritage, traditions and practices of different faiths, and widen students’ appreciation of how those faiths and belief systems interact within lived environments, communities and in different social settings. Thus enhancing not only MA provision but also the learning experience and the environment where that learning experience takes place.

The programme is of interest to both graduates and practitioners who wish to specialise further in Religion, Culture and Society. Graduates may wish to extend their knowledge to prepare for academic and professional careers in the private or public sector, including local government, race relations officers, ministry, equality/diversity training officers, social services, social welfare, community development, youth work, research, education and communication support workers, lecturing in further or higher education. Practitioners may wish to update their knowledge or gain a higher qualification for personal or professional development. The programme will also appeal to working individuals who are interested in the range of topics offered and do not wish to specialise in a rigidly defined Theology based MA programme. In addition, many students are currently seeking Masters’ programmes as a way of weathering the economic recession.

RCS offers progression routes onto PGCE courses for graduates wishing to develop a career in teaching. There are also opportunities to further study for PhD or professional doctorate.

The MA in Religion, Culture & Society brings together disciplines of Theology, Philosophy, Sociology and International Relations – a very innovative, exciting and challenging post-graduate degree award.

The whole philosophy of the Religion, Culture and Society MA is to promote inclusively, encourage reflection on interfaith dialogue and highlight the important contribution religion and belief can make to community cohesion and the combating of religious prejudice and discrimination (QCA & DfES, 2004). The MA evaluates how and why the role of religion and culture has changed within society, and explores the impact and influence of religion and belief within economical, political and social constructs. Religion and faith is critically analysed within the framework of theistic and atheistic approaches to sexuality, spirituality, human rights, territory and space and cultural relationships. The application of classical and contemporary theological and philosophical concepts and theories of faith are examined in relation to lived environments.

The MA in Religion, Culture and Society embodies and supports the objectives outlined in the AHSS 2007-2012 strategy, is aligned to Theology and Religious Studies benchmarks, HEQ (2008) descriptors and is situated specifically within a social science framework. The course supports a pluralistic perspective on and within religion and belief traditions, and engages with a range of methods of study, explores a number of interesting and challenging modules and includes and a diversified range of assessment practices.

Religion was recorded in the Palaeolithic period and during the Middle Ages it started to be shaped and formed. The programme draws on a rich history of religion since 1495 to understand religion in its modern context in the West. You are taught by active international researchers and practitioners.

The University of Aberdeen MSc in Religion and Society provides a unique opportunity for postgraduate study in the sociology of religion. Taught by well-known leaders in the field, the programme provides students with study in both the sociological study of religion and training in advanced sociological methods. This programme is ideally suited for anyone considering the pursuit of doctoral studies in sociology of religion, and also provides a broad-base of social-scientific skills that are both marketable and useful for those pursuing careers either in government or in the third-sector.

The University offers you very useful facilities which include a chapel from the Middle Ages on campus along with services, ceremonies and guided tours plus text and research built up since this time. The degree can be studied full time or part time and it allows you to combine it with your other work. There are two routes through the programme:

The Research Route is designed for students whose focus is mainly academic research, and who are likely to want to go on to study at doctoral level. You will receive training in doing research at postgraduate level, and your degree will comprise two subject-based taught modules, the research skills module, and a substantial research dissertation.

The Professional Route is designed for students who may not necessarily want to go on to an academic career, but who want to develop their academic skills and professional practice. You will develop a small project related to religion in society, which you may use as part of a dissertation-based research project. You will be taught skills of project management and reflective practice and your degree will comprise three subject-based taught modules, the professional skills module, and a dissertation.

For full-time students modules are delivered on two days of the week. The contact hours for taught modules are usually two hours a week over a ten week period.  

Course structure

Research route: You must take the 30-credit Researching Religion module (delivered over three terms), two 30-credit taught modules (normally one in term 1 and one in term 2), and dissertation modules amounting to 90 credits.

Professional route. You must take the 30-credit Professional Development module (delivered over three terms), three 30-credit taught modules over two terms, and a 60- credit dissertation.

The taught modules currently on offer include:

  • Religion in the Public Sphere
  • Religion and Philosophy in Contemporary Life
  • Religion and Peace-Building

Which of the 30-credit taught modules are delivered in normal teaching hours will depend on staff availability and student demand, and so they may vary from year to year.

The course is mainly aimed at full-time students (though a part-time route is available).

Teaching and learning

Teaching will come in different forms:

Skills modules (Researching Religion and Professional Development) will employ a 'hands on' approach by getting you to do short tasks and exercises in class and between sessions. Some of these will be linked to the taught modules for full time students. You will learn by having to work out how to solve problems and find the information you need in a guided and supported environment.

Taught modules will introduce you to relevant ideas and key theoretical frameworks, exposing you to current research, and helping you to develop independence of thought and self-directed learning. Teaching will involve some lecturing but also extended discussions and debates.

Research modules (dissertations) will be supervised by someone with knowledge in the topic. This kind of teaching offers in-depth individual tutoring that will guide your work on a particular research project.

The University also offers a range of additional learning support services to assist students throughout their studies.

Assessment and feedback

A range of assessment methods are used during the programme. These include:

1. Written assignments for taught modules and independent studies.

2. Dissertations.

3. Proposals.

4. Portfolios.

5. Presentations.

Written feedback will be given as part of the required assessments which are specified for each module. This will be available three weeks after the assessed work is submitted. In addition, informal feedback (i.e. comment on work that does not include a pass/fail assessment or mark) will be offered in a variety of ways according to the module. For most modules this will be comments on drafts of essays, but for some it might be verbal feedback on class presentations or class exercises.

Research opportunities

Postgraduate students will have the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of research interests by participating in the research seminars which take place regularly within the School of Humanities, Religion and Philosophy.

The political map of West Asia, home to more than 60 per cent of the world’s oil and gas wealth, is in flux. The on-going process of forming fundamentalist ideologies in the region, new waves of political Islamic revival, and the re-emergence of sectarian struggles in the region have heightened concerns about religio-political dynamics which are still not fully understood by scholars and policymakers. Moreover, the growing number of organised Islamic groups in the region, representing diverse political goals, are generating tensions that threaten to move beyond the borders of West Asia.

The MA in Islamic and West Asian Studies is designed for students interested in the Islamic and West Asian world, as well as those wishing to pursue either a career in international affairs or further research on Muslim and West Asian communities.

The course is taught by scholars affiliated with Royal Holloway’s Centre for Islamic and West Asian Studies (CIWAS), an inter-disciplinary centre whose mission is to promote the exchange of ideas and knowledge among scholars from East and West. You will have the opportunity to engage critically with the history and politics of West Asian societies and Muslim communities, and have access to a wide range of regional resources which CIWAS has recently acquired.

Teaching & assessment

Teaching and learning is delivered primarily by means of seminar discussions, informal lectures, oral presentations, guided independent research, and guided independent study.

Assessment takes the form of various formative and summative assignments, including, in the case of some modules, an unseen written exam.

The final assignment is a dissertation on a topic developed in consultation with an assigned supervisor. It is expected that the dissertation will be researched and written primarily in the summer months, although supervision and dissertation training will begin during the academic year.

The course encourages you to ask questions about religious beliefs and practice, as well as how this impacts on people and society. You will undertake your own research projects within different areas of the discipline including: individual differences; mental health religion and culture; social psychology of religious experience, belief and behaviour; and positive psychology of religion.

What Will You Study?

There are two core modules. An introduction to the psychology of religion which gives you a broad introduction to the field and research methods which provides you with the tools to enable you to undertake your own research in the area.

Learning is flexible. For each module you are expected to post to the forum and engage with the debates on the forum at least twice a week. There is reading to do each week and to consider and relate to the forum posts. Modules run over 12 weeks and with the exception of the two core modules you can decide in discussion with your module tutor the question you wish to ask for each module.

Biblical and Religious Studies has been taught at Aberdeen since its inauguration in 1495 making it one of the oldest and most established universities to study this discipline area. The programme provides a comprehensive overview of the foundational concerns and current debates in sociology and offers a range of options for exploring applications in specific areas of research. You learn about current theoretical tools and develop skills in research and data analysis, which can be used in a range of professional fields. The programme is also an excellent basis for pursuing further research in sociology or more specialised or applied subjects.

Purpose

The programme aims to provide you with:

  • an advanced overview of debates in the history of sociology and contemporary sociological research
  • extend your existing knowledge of major approaches within the academic study of sociology
  • develop your skills in research design and data collection
  • familiarise you with using secondary and qualitative data

In a globalised and interdependent world, these issues can only be understood from an international perspective which accounts for these common pressures and processes, but which also recognises and engages with the diversity of national traditions and institutions for delivering welfare.

The International Social Policy programme takes a policy analytic approach to provide you with an advanced understanding of current debates, theories and concepts relevant to international social policy. You learn about the common features of social policy arrangements internationally and the variety and differences that characterise welfare across the countries and regions of the world. Drawing on the research-based expertise available at SSPSSR which relates to countries ranging from China, South Korea and Singapore in South East Asia to the UK, Germany and Sweden in Western Europe, you are equipped to understand how national and global forces interact to shape trajectories of welfare system development.

If you are interested in how current societies are shaped by modern issues this programme looks at European developments and how new frontiers came about. The programme comes from a very informed body of research undertaken for the European Commission and at the 'New Europe Centre' in Aberdeen. People who have studied this programme go on to work within the civil service, as foreign correspondents or diplomats, within international offices, in NGOs, political parties and advisors and as researchers.

You consider how European societies have been shaped and changed looking at migration, social policy, ethical relations, citizenship, work and family looking at population, divisions and social relationships. You study population decline and increases, xenophobia, divisions in society, social relationships within Europe from a range of contemporary resources.

This MA programme at Kent exposes students to a wide range of thinking and approaches in social science research presented in a multi-disciplinary context and at an advanced level.

Through this programme you develop practical skills in data collection, in data analysis and interpretation, and in the presentation of research findings so that students gain insight into the research process from design to the production of new knowledge. This MA draws on the wide-ranging expertise of UCL Hebrew & Jewish Studies, the only department of its kind in the UK, and offers modules in all areas, periods, and aspects of Jewish studies. The programme prepares students for further research, personal engagement, and interdisciplinary study.

About this degree

All students are introduced to the disciplines, theories, methods, and practice of learning and research in Jewish Studies BA, and those without prior knowledge of Hebrew learn the language at elementary level. An extensive range of optional modules are available in Jewish history, literature, languages, and Jewish thought, from antiquity to the modern world.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of one or two (see below) core modules (30/60 credits), between four or six optional modules (60/90 credits), and a research dissertation (60 credits).

All students undertake an independent research project which should be based in part on primary sources. The project culminates in a dissertation of 12,000 words.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and other media such as occasional film viewings. Students will be expected to visit the major archives and libraries in the London area, depending on their specific areas of research and interest. Assessment is mainly through unseen examinations, coursework, long essays, and the dissertation.
