This programme has been developed in Partnership with the Local Mental Health Foundation University Trust. It offers a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which will help you develop as a clinician in psychiatric practice. You can expect to gain significant opportunities in continuing professional development by choosing to study modules relevant to the field you work in which can also be taken as short courses. You will also end the course in preparation of Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych).

Along with lectures and expert led clinics, you will also have regular small group seminars and tutorials, with the additional support of a personal tutor. This programme has a practical emphasis and also provides opportunities for additional attendance to short courses and conferences offered by the Department. You’ll have a choice of modules, excellent networking and peer support, and consistently positive feedback.

Course Structure

The MSc in Psychiatric Practice comprises of 6 taught modules (30 credits each) of approximately 12 weeks duration. Successful completion of the programme leads to an award of MSc in Psychiatric Practice

- Post Graduate Certificate:

In Year 1 trainees will receive: Semester A: 2 themes days (1/2 day assessment); Semester B: 2 theme days

Clinical lectures focus on the principles of Psychiatric Practice. The programme has an emphasis on the following key areas: Diagnostic theory and classification; Psychopharmacology and medication compliance; Neurological and cognitive examination; Human growth and development; Organic psychiatry; Neuroscience and genetics; Transcultural psychiatry; and Epidemiology.

Examples of clinical skills included during the programme are: Consultation skills: history taking / conducting a good psychiatric history; Bio-psychosocial assessment; Neurological and cognitive examination; Clinical case management and many more.

Teaching methods

You will experience a wide variety of teaching methods throughout the programme including: interactive and ‘key-note’ lectures, seminars and workshops incorporating for example case studies, role play, scenario based learning and discussion groups covering a wide variety of topics. Individual and group based tutorials. Skills based demonstrations / workshops and the use of technologies for example video, podcasts, and other e-packages designed to enhance learning and teaching. These resources are supported by a well stocked learning resource centre and via a virtual learning environment called StudyNet which enables you to access learning resources on line 24 hours and day, 7 days a week. The course is intense and will require students to be "self directed" learners.

Work Placement

Full Time, overseas students do not require GMC registration as this programme does not require direct patient contact and management.

The programme prepares specialist trainees for Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRC Psych).

The programme provides intensive training in the neurosciences as they relate to the physiologic function and behaviour of the organism. It builds on the broad research strengths of recognised scientists, particularly in basic and clinical neuroscience, molecular and cell biology, neuroendocrinology, behaviour, neurodegeneration and psychopharmacology. Guest lecturers from other universities bring their specialist and advanced knowledge to the programme.

Throughout the programme, basic principles will be taught and illustrated in the context of various brain diseases, including psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. A practical and a research project will give you valuable experience in experimental neuroscience. Importantly, tutorials and presentations will also help to develop your communication skills.

This programme is organised by the School of Clinical Sciences and is housed in the state-of-the-art Dorothy Hodgkin Building with dedicated MSc facilities.

The MSc will be of interest to those with a medical training who want to diversify into research, and to science graduates who wish to develop their knowledge and skills before embarking on a doctoral research programme. While part-time study is available, this needs to be discussed with the programme director.

Careers

The MSc in Molecular Neuroscience can open up a number of different career paths. Many graduates of the programme have secured PhD studentships here in the UK or in other parts of the world, including the US, Australia and Germany. This often leads to a career in research or academia (eg as a research assistant or research associate, teaching fellow, lecturer).

Other graduates have gone on to a career in industry, scientific writing or clinical trial co-ordination. Some graduates have gone into medicine studies after completing the course. Staff are available to discuss prospective career pathways with students who undertake the programme.

The Abnormal and Clinical Psychology course aims to provide a high level of understanding of the theory and practice of clinical psychology within healthcare settings and prepares students for professional clinical training.

Clinical psychology focuses on the challenges faced by people with clinical, mental or physical (neuropsychological) health conditions. The role of the clinical psychologist is to work with these individuals and attempt to improve their quality of life.

The Abnormal and Clinical Psychology course will greatly enhance students’ suitability for professional clinical training, for example a three year DClin Clinical Psychology programme at a BPS accredited training centre.

Entry onto a clinical psychology doctorate training programme is extremely competitive, with candidates usually expected to have acquired training and experience beyond degree level. 

The MSc degree provides a valuable academic foundation for future doctoral training in clinical psychology, it is largely theory-based and is designed to address core topics in abnormal and clinical psychology.

Clinical training courses also look for evidence of clinical experience with relevant client groups.

Swansea University does not provide this directly, but work experience (paid and voluntary) may be available through the local NHS Psychology Services. Opportunities may also be available locally through independent and private sector organisations (e.g. Mind Cymru, Headway, private rehabilitation services, etc.). These opportunities are regularly advertised and students are supported in making the most of them. 

Please note this course does not lead to a clinical qualification recognised by the British Psychological Society.

Abnormal and Clinical Psychology Course Structure

The one year, full-time degree for Abnormal and Clinical Psychology requires students to attend the University for two full days a week (normally Monday and Tuesday).

The two-year part-time degree requires students to attend the University for one full day a week.

In the first two semesters taught modules are provided with the research project typically undertaken during the summer months.

On occasion sessions are arranged on other days of the week (e.g. when visiting clinician talks/workshops or employability sessions). 

Teaching is done via group sessions with practical classes provided on research and design topics. These will be assessed via written course work and a written examination.

This programme teaches advanced experimental approaches to dissecting the mechanisms of drug action (pharmacology), a science that has seen innovative theoretical and technical development at UCL for over a century.

About this degree

In addition to providing experience of both classical and modern pharmacological techniques, the programme will help develop skills for literature search-based data acquisition and analysis; written and verbal communication of science; abstract writing; poster preparation; graphical processing; image preparation for publication; writing a scientific paper; and giving research presentations.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of three core modules (75 credits), one optional module (15 credits), and a research project (90 credits).
