With recent changes to the organisation and management of community orders in the UK, and the partial privatisation of probation, there is now a greater focus on developing practices for managing post-sentence work with people who have been convicted.

This specialist Criminology Masters will provide graduates with the knowledge and theory to further influence and lead the development of practice in post-custody supervision. Throughout your studies, you’ll delve into the philosophy, theory and practice of working with individuals who are sentenced to either serve a community order or a prison sentence and who are subject to post-custody supervision.

What you will study

You’ll be encouraged to explore the criminal justice system in detail covering theories of crime, rehabilitation, retribution, deterrence, desistance and restorative justice. You’ll gain an insight into how different civil services (including prison and probation) work with offenders whilst also gaining a better understanding of the work carried out in the third and private sectors.

Guided independent study, a module in research methods, and a dissertation will also form part of your studies. You will also study a further option module available from a choice of topics including drug interventions, managing and leading interdisciplinary teams, supervision and support skills, ethics, reflection and safeguarding, restorative and approaches.

Learning and teaching methods

Taught by a team of lecturers with long-standing expertise in the field, you will learn through a mix of lectures, seminars and tutorials. As part of your studies you’ll also undertake independent study that will be supervised by a member of the teaching team.

The teaching team comprises of active researchers who specialise in drug use, crime prevention, homicide and violence, animal abuse, youth justice and youth policy, policing protests, informal justice and alternatives to prosecution and imprisonment.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

Upon successful completion of this Masters degree you could pursue a career in the criminal justice system, such as the police, courts, prison, probation services and youth offending services.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods are varied and include essays, critiques, written examinations, multiple choice tests, and oral and poster presentations. You’ll also be required to complete a dissertation of around 20,000 words on an individual piece of research, which may be work-related.

The Advanced Child Protection MA is a distance learning programme which runs on a part-time basis for two or more years and has been created for experienced professionals.

The programme gives a 360-degree perspective on child protection, introducing you to the viewpoints of academics, practitioners, organisations, parents, children and young people, integrated with contemporary research theory and policy. The impact that technology has on protecting children as well as the effect of the globalisation of the abuse and exploitation of vulnerable children is considered throughout.

The MA has attracted national and international students, all with a variety of experience in child protection. Access to this diverse pool of knowledge within an environment that allows you to question and excel makes this programme unique and rewarding.

Course detail

Teaching is based on guided study using an online learning environment (Moodle), videoed expert lectures, online seminars, 'serious games', acted and filmed role play, as well as web-based weekly forums.

The Centre for Child Protection is a leader in developing and disseminating interactive simulations dealing with a range of child protection issues. The University was recently awarded the 2016 Guardian University Award for digital innovation in recognition of the ground-breaking 'Lottie' project, a tool to help children become aware of the dangers of sexual grooming.

All the work is completed online where you participate in online forums and have access to journal articles and specialist materials. After successful completion of the assignment, the module is equivalent to 20 credits at Master’s level.

The MSc has been designed to provide an in-depth study of Criminal Investigation, and develop critical and analytical skills involving the principles, practices and techniques of Criminal Investigation.

The aims of the programmes are to; equip students with the knowledge and practical skills to operate as a crime investigator and manager in serious and complex cases, develop critical and analytical skills involving the principles, practices and techniques of crime investigation in serious and complex cases, develop competence in research methods and the presentation of information, develop skills in solving problems both independently and as a team member commensurate with Level 7.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

This course is available in full-time, part-time and distance learning modes. Computing Facilities are available in the general computing suites found within the building and throughout campus. Extensive Resources are available to support your studies, you are advised to take advantage of the free training sessions provided by the library & training team designed to enable you to gain all the skills you need for your research and study.

The library provides access to a huge range of electronic resources – e-journals and databases, e-books, images and texts.

Course and module materials are not provided in ‘hard copy’ format, however, wherever practicable, lecture notes and/or presentations, seminar materials, assignment briefs and materials and other relevant information and resources are made available in electronic form via eLearn. This is the brand name for the online Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that the University uses to support and enhance teaching and learning.

All students can access the eLearn spaces for the course and modules that they are registered for. Once logged into your eLearn area you can access material from the course and all of the modules you are studying.

FURTHER INFORMATION

The course is offered in weekly six-hour blocks which enables professionals in the field to take the degree more easily. It is aimed that students will have access to, and use, case management software supplied by Xanalys©, which is used by police forces internationally to administer complex investigations. Students will also be exposed to learning opportunities in our “HYDRA” immersive learning suite, used by many emergency services to prepare their senior officers to handle major incidents.

The course is assessed entirely by a variety of coursework assignments such as essays, reports and presentations. Every effort is made to spread the assessments in the interests of students; but, inevitably, assessments do tend to have deadlines at the end of semesters, so students are advised to plan and make early starts on assessed work so as to avoid problems in this context.

Semester 1 of the course is designed to ensure that you have the basic skills needed to obtain an MSc. It is important that you develop a range of skills that will be of benefit when you gain employment after the course. The main skills that you are developing will be in the areas of presentations, report writing, and problem solving.

The programme meets the Professional Capabilities Framework as required by the HCPC. You gain the knowledge and skills needed by professional social workers. The programme provides extensive work in practice learning settings that meet Government requirements. The MA is a full-time, two-year programme running from September each year.

Purpose

The MA invites you to think coherently and systematically about the context, nature and aims of social work in the UK.

The changes taking place in social work nationally make this an exciting and challenging time to join us. Our team includes qualified practitioners with experience in a range of services and management settings who are constantly examining change and its implications on the future of social work.

Format and assessment

The programme incorporates critical analysis and practice-based skills. This includes a two-day observational practice learning opportunity and a 70-day practice learning opportunity in Stage 1, with a further 100-day placement in Stage 2.

In addition to assessed work, linked to both taught modules and practice learning, you also complete a dissertation in a specific area of research in your second year.

Social work jobs exist in local authority and health settings (eg social services departments, hospital settings), voluntary organisations (Barnardo's, NSPCC) and private agencies such as private fostering agencies and care homes. Some graduates choose to undertake agency work.

Our graduates obtain a range of transferable skills and report high levels of being in employment or further study within six months of graduation across all of our degree programmes.

Why study this programme?

Taught by those with academic and professional experience in the subject, this course will develop the student’s ability to understand the criminal justice system, at both theoretical and operational levels, from UK and international perspectives. The core module applies social science to explain why crime concentrates in specific places at particular times. Then by analysing social, economic and political influences (including youth, race, gender and media), it explores how different societies attempt to control crime and offenders. This leads the student into examining the constituent parts of the CJS process, exploring the challenges surrounding risk assessment, diversion, sentencing, policing and prisons.

Learning Environment and Assessment

The course leader is Dr Rebecca Coleman, whose Ph.D. relates to Applied Psychology. An experienced lecturer in the field of Criminal Justice she is also an active researcher, with a specific interest in violent offenders and evidence based policing. She has worked with the Police, Home Office and NGO’s in generating innovative approaches to issues of crime and disorder.

Assisting will be Professor Stuart Kirby. Stuart is a chartered psychologist and following a 30 year career with Lancashire Police, retired as a Detective Chief Superintendent, and joined academia. He is widely published in the field of Policing and Criminal Justice and has extensive research experience. He has also trained and presented to Criminal Justice agencies in Europe, USA, Canada, India, UAE, and Australia.
