This shared core taught element means it is possible to swop between the courses.

Following the taught element you have the opportunity to apply your skills and knowledge in a research project. If you choose the Masters in Applications in Environmental Sciences you will undertake a second project, which can involve a placement in industry.

Aims

The aim of this programme is to
-Provide interdisciplinary foundation training for students from a natural science or engineering background intending to pursue a career, with or without further postgraduate training, in pollution control, environmental management or resource conservation.
-Provide an understanding of the nature of explanation in social science, natural science and engineering as applied to research or other investigative activity in pollution control and environmental management.
-Provide generic and subject-specific training in research design and methods of data collection and analysis.
-Provide subject-specific training in the social, economic, legal, planning and engineering dimensions of environmental protection and resource conservation tailored to the student's research interests and/or career needs.
-Provide subject-specific training on how natural systems function and the perturbations to those systems arising from human activity, again tailored to the student's research interests and/or career needs.
-Meet the needs of employers that require an ability to bring sound science and current thinking to environmental problems.
-Foster interdisciplinary study within the School and within the University through provision of high quality students to carry out projects.
-Enable the student systematically to research the area of environmental pollution via the literature and create an ordered structured report on a subject of relevance to the course and their own interests.

Career opportunities

Governments, industry and society, in all countries, are increasingly aware of the importance of securing sustainable development through cost-effective pollution controls and resource conservation. As a result, there is a growing need, internationally, for suitably qualified personnel in the environmental authorities of central and local government, industry and commerce, consultancy and research. Moreover, the resulting legal requirements on the part of governments and industry to conform to national and international agreements and regulations means that such demand will remain even during periods of economic austerity and retrenchment.

Employers are increasingly requiring environmental science graduates to have a strong grounding in the quantitative and qualitative skills required to address environmental questions in additional to subject-specific knowledge and understanding. Our programmes address these requirements through a core of skills-based modules with the emphasis on synthesis.

Graduates from the existing Pollution and Environmental Control Masters have been very successful in obtaining relevant environment-related employment in areas such as industry, local and central authorities, the regulatory sector, consultancies, education and research. Typically, between 20 and 30% of students completing the programme undertake postgraduate research immediately after graduation.

We expect that graduates from the new Applications in Environmental Science Masters will be attractive to employers in the environmental authorities of central and local government, industry and commerce, consultancy and research. The experience gained during an industrial placement will be especially valuable to employers.

You understand legislation and policies relating to pollution control, known environment risk assessment methods and regulation and regulators. In todays world there are many pollution issues not least of which is air pollution and its affect on our health and quality of life. Pollution control is essential in waterways and sea to ensure ecology and the food chain are not affected by major issues and soil can also be contaminated in many different ways over the longer term or in the short term.

Employment options include consultancy work to advise all types of organisations, sectors and business and support regulators at busy times. You can work as a regulator within central and local government and private business involved in operations that affect the environment, Sectors you are likely to work in cross energy, agriculture, fisheries, waterways, and specific polluting industrial areas. New technology is also becoming widely available to sense different pollutants in the environment with many different tools and options becoming available to experts in the area. Different countries require different levels of regulation but there is now a growing social need by major organisations devoted to health and quality of life such as UNEP to solve major pollution issues that put us as a species at risk.

You study environmental science related to pollution and remediation at UK and international level, studying hydrocarbon risk assessment and remediation, environmental analysis and EIA (environmental impact assessments). You look at legislation, risk and analysis.

Students will learn the theoretical and practical skills needed in the application of a range of treatment wetlands for pollution control and water management. Field and laboratory work will also cover the latest techniques in environmental analysis needed for contemporary wetland monitoring and experimentation.

Instrumental and environmental analysis: alongside the theoretical and practical design skills needed for the building of constructed treatment wetlands students on this course will learn a variety of instrumental analysis techniques. These will be tailored for constructed wetland engineers and biogeochemists interested in environmental analysis and suitable for those studying a wide variety of aquatic and terrestrial habitats – not just wetlands. The theory, practical use and basic maintenance of the instruments will be covered, along with sample collection and analysis.

The lab and field based techniques covered include:

pH, conductivity and Redox potential
Greenhouse gas (GHG) collection and analysis using a gas chromatograph (GC) and infra-red gas analysis (IRGA)
Cation and anion concentration analysis using ion chromatography (IC)

Constructed treatment wetland research project: the research project comprises a third of the MSc and is supervised by research active staff with excellent publication record and experience in their field.

The course combines taught modules with an independent major research project. The taught modules introduce the nature of our atmosphere, its composition and meteorology, air pollutant emissions, air pollution chemistry and climate change / carbon management, together with the practical measures used to limit emissions from sources ranging from power stations to vehicles and the legislative and policy framework used by national and local authorities to enforce air quality objectives. The research project allows students to undertake an in-depth investigation of a particular aspect of air pollution of interest to them, and further their level of understanding.

This programme is run by the Division of Environmental Health and Risk Management.

About the Division of Environmental Health and Risk Management
The Division is based in the well-equipped, purpose-built facilities of the University's Public Health Building. Research attracts extensive funding from many sources, including the Department of Transport; the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA); the Environment Agency; the Department of Health; the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and European Union. The collaborative nature of much of this work, together with the mix of pure, strategic and applied research, often involving interdisciplinary teams spanning physical, biological, chemical, medical and social sciences, provides a dynamic and internationally recognised research environment.

The Division is led by Professor Roy Harrison who is a member of the U.K. government’s Air Quality Expert Group, Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants, and Committee on Toxicity. He often gives media interviews on subjects including the Volkswagen emissions scandal.

This postgraduate programme in Environmental Science: Pollution and Monitoring provides a rigorous academic treatment of the fundamental scientific principles and practice of assessing and controlling the extent of environmental damage by Man’s activities. The course emphasises the technology and principles behind the processes and techniques related to the reduction of emissions to air, land and water and the effects of pollution.

The course develops understanding of the complex interactions of societies and their environments, and a critical awareness of how these interactions are unevenly experienced. The course seeks to raise your ability to understand the influence of human activities on ecological system including the relationship between hazard and risk. You will be able to study the environmental and technological issues in the management and control of air, soil and water pollution. In addition, you will learn how to collect representative samples of air, soil and water for environmental monitoring. Hands on experience on the use of various analytical techniques and the use of various statistical analyses for data quality assessment (DQA) are also provided.

Accreditation

The MSc in Environmental Science: Pollution and Monitoring is accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM). This entitles students to free student membership of the IES and CIWEM.

Scholarships

For our September intake we have 2 specific scholarship schemes available: the Queen's Anniversary Prize Scholarships provide 6 x £3000 fee waiver scholarships to our best applicants (no additional application is required for these); and the £4000 Water Conservators Bursary is awarded to one student who writes the essay on water and the environment (some years we split the scholarship between 2 exceptional applicants). Brunel Univeristy London also has some scholarship schemes available for applicants to any MSc programme.

Designed to suit your needs

This MSc course can be taken in part-time (from 1 day a week for 2 years) or full-time (from 2 days a week for 1 years) mode. Students can start in September or January.

If you want to make a difference to climate change, you want to regulate from government or government agencies, provide consultancy advice or you simply enjoy the natural environment and you want as much of it preserved as possible and you want to learn how to manage it effectively for future generations, Environmental Management offers an excellent range of advanced assessment theory and practise. You learn how to manage the environment, land use and its challenges, and you learn the various pollutant testing skills and knowledge to help you determine how best remediate. Environment Managers are involved in all types of land use which include onshore and offshore regulation, planning and development control, waterways management, soil management and the various analysis tools which are accepted as calibrated and effective in giving correct indications of pollution to ensure companies remain compliant with the legal obligations.

There is often a conflict between land use and its protection. We now live in a world where air pollution is at record levels, population determines that we need clever ways to manage life and work, and land use planning is often at odds with natural flood prevention measures. The role of Environment Managers plays a critical role in determining our future generations and how they will live and interact with earth by ensuring the best possible outcomes in terms of regulation, negotiation and improvements to quality of life from the natural environment. You study pollution, resource management, catchment management EIA (Environmental Impact Assessments). Work can include consultancy, regulators and NGOs.

Course content

The programme is divided into three stages. To complete the Master’s level qualification you must complete six modules and an independent research thesis to a total of 180 credits. During the course, you complete three compulsory modules and choose three optional modules in stages one and two. Optional modules are subject to staff availability and student interest. Each 20 unit module will be equivalent to 200 hours of study and the module guide, which you will have access to during your studies, has details on how these are allocated. The Research Thesis is worth 60 credits and is therefore equivalent to 600 hours of study.

The research thesis (dissertation) is the final compulsory module in stage three. This ensures that you study the same broad themes within wastes management, but are also able to tailor the focus and level of the qualification to suit your individual needs, experience, interests and career aspirations.

You can also take certain modules as a ‘one off’, either as a taster before deciding whether to study the course in full, or as an opportunity to update your skills in a particular area.

Specific Objectives are to develop an understanding of :

•The general mechanisms of toxicity
•The basis of setting environmental quality standards
•The behaviour of contaminants in water, air and soil
•The main toxicological problems of contaminants in the environment

To take this course, you will need access to a computer with a fast internet connection. The course uses the Blackboard learning environment and the modules are delivered using online lectures, including practical and tutorial material. Students and staff interact via email, discussion boards, online chat and telephone. Course Content

The MSc is a one year full time course consisting of taught material and a substantial research project. Teaching is delivered by academic experts within the Department of Chemistry as well as external experts from other academic institutions and industry. The Teaching component of the course is delivered via a mix of lectures, workshops, seminars and practical work. You will learn about the key principles of green chemistry and the importance of sustainable technology in a variety of areas. In addition to this, you will also have the opportunity to enhance your transferable skills.

Assessment methods include a closed examination, written assignments, presentations, posters and practical work.

Research Project

A key part of the MSc in Green Chemistry is the research project. The whole course is 180 credits and the research project accounts for 100 of these so is a very significant part of the programme.

Students are able to choose from a range of project areas in order to carry out research in their area of interest. Projects will be supervised by an academic member of staff, and may also involve collaboration with industry. Projects are chosen in the early stages of the course and you will be allocated to a PAG - Project Area Group - that corresponds with larger research projects that are currently taking place within the Green Chemistry Centre.

Projects can vary each year, but examples of recent MSc students' research includes:
-Production of natural flavours and fragrances using biocatalysis in scCO2
-Clean synthetic strategies for production of pharmaceuticals

Our MSc Animal Behaviour is unusual in that it is offered within a Psychology department. This benefits you by providing a strong background in a broad cross-section of research methods used by researchers studying human and animal behaviour, a strong training in statistical methods and multidisciplinary study environment. You will learn how to formulate and test relevant research questions, and critically evaluate the research carried out by others in the field.

The programme will give you an insight into the varied means of performing animal behaviour research in a wide array of locations with wild and (semi-)captive animals – in the wild, laboratory, zoo or under human management. As part of the taught component you will be exposed to lectures and seminar discussions, research talks and discussions with speakers, boost and consolidate your knowledge and skills in statistical data analysis, participate in a one-week residential field course (during the Easter break) and in research skill training sessions. During the course you will continuously develop your abilities in critical analysis of the literature and of scientific evidence, project development, communication and scientific writing.

You will be part of the lively, internationally-recognised Centre for Research in Animal Behaviour (http://psychology.exeter.ac.uk/research/centres/crab/) and will have the opportunity to work alongside our experienced researchers on a research apprenticeship which is a central component of the course. The apprenticeship enables you to develop your research skills further and write up the research in the form of a journal article for potential publication. Apprenticeships can also be undertaken under the supervision of researchers at various institutions with whom we have developed long-term relationships.

On successful completion of the MSc you will have the skills to pursue a PhD, work as a research assistant and project manager or follow a career working in zoos, research centres, nature reserves, wildlife and other animal-related offices, education, scientific media and the expanding field of eco-tourism.

Research Apprenticeship

A distinctive feature of all our taught Masters programmes is the Research Apprenticeship. The Apprenticeship enables you to develop your research skills by working alongside experienced researchers or practitioners. You will also gain experience of writing up your research in the form of a dissertation.

Many students undertake their apprenticeship with researchers in the Centre for Research in Animal Behaviour in our School, both in the labs and in the field around the campus, Devon and abroad. Students work on a wide range of topics and with different animals, for example:
• Social behaviour, animal welfare and enrichment, zoo research, animal cognition, navigation, sensory ecology, behavioural ecology, ecotoxicology
• Fish (guppies, sticklebacks, killifish), mammals (primates, squirrels, whales, donkeys, dogs, meerkats, coyotes), birds (pigeons, chickens, pheasants, magpies, flamingoes, wood and sea birds), invertebrates (crabs, honeybees, bumblebees, desert ants, wood ants)
