Children’s Nurses assess, plan and develop individual packages of care designed to provide the appropriate levels of physical, emotional and psychological care to meet the needs of children, young people and their families, while meeting the challenges of a changing healthcare environment.

This Masters degree provides the exciting opportunity for graduates to enter the nursing profession. You will gain a comprehensive education in nursing and develop into a confident, autonomous, compassionate and research-aware practitioner, specialising in children’s nursing. The programme includes an innovative exploration of leadership and management in healthcare and will enable you to critically evaluate evidence to inform decision making and apply analytical and creative problem solving approaches to complex situations. You will be fully equipped with the skills, knowledge and practical experience required to deliver excellent care as a modern-day nursing professional.

What will I study?

Year 1 provides the opportunity to achieve national generic and field specific competency outcomes. These include professional values, communication and interpersonal skills, nursing practice, decision making, leadership, management and team working. The programme will immerse you in health promotion, prevention strategies and best practice for service users and their families. A comprehensive introduction will also be provided to the research process.

Year 2 continues the development of field-specific competencies, with a particular focus on caring for children with complex, critical or life limiting conditions. In addition to this, you will develop the leadership and management skills required for the transition to professional practice.

This programme adheres closely to the NHS’ six core values. These values, enshrined within the NHS Constitution, have been developed by patients, the public and staff to inspire passion in the NHS, guide it in the 21st century, and provide common ground for cooperation in achieving shared aspirations. How will I study?

You will be taught using a combination of seminars, lectures, tutorials, work-based learning and technology enhanced learning. The theory part of the programme is delivered during the normal working week (Monday to Friday).

You will spend 50% of your time in practice which will be undertaken in hospitals and community settings within the NHS, local authority, independent and voluntary organisations. You will be supported by a practice placement mentor/supervisor and a practice education facilitator.

Placements include weekend, early morning, evening and night work to ensure access to a full range of practice experiences across 24 hour care. There may also be the opportunity to undertake a practice learning experience outside the region, either within the United Kingdom or internationally.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment in both theory and practice is continuous, assessed against national outcomes and generic and field competencies, with students required to demonstrate evidence of their achievement. A range of assessment of theory procedures is in place including assignments, seminar presentations, advanced notice examinations, online learning activities, case studies and portfolio work.

Who will be teaching me?

All lectures are delivered by professionals within the field of nursing as well as specialists in other areas. The pathway team represent a range of qualified, research-active professionals with extensive experience of working within the health and/or social care sector. Most importantly service users, carers and their families will be involved in facilitating learning so that an understanding is gained about the impact care has on individual groups.

What are my career prospects?

The complex and dynamic landscape of modern nursing requires nurses who can work creatively and innovatively, who can lead and inspire, who can make decisions in challenging situations and who can contribute to the advancement of nursing.

Career opportunities are excellent. NMC registration is recognised the world over and following registration as a Children’s Nurse you can pursue a career in a variety of settings. These include specialist children’s hospitals, general hospitals and paediatric community services/teams.

Modules are delivered as standalone at both undergraduate and masters level and you can access a number of modules within the children's nursing portfolio. You will spend time in a children’s hospice, a special school, A&E, a children’s walk-in centre and a neo-natal unit. These invaluable placements will enable you to build up a network of contacts and a greater appreciation of where your role a Specialist Community Children’s Nurse fits into the overall scheme of healthcare provision.

You can study full time (40 weeks) or part time (80 weeks), with modules delivered one or two days a week and clinical placements interspersing the classroom learning blocks.

Theory days can be used for activities such as non-module specific sessions, masterclasses, personal study and assignment preparation.

You will be appointed a personal tutor to support and oversee your progress through the course and you will work with an experienced practitioner - your practice teacher/mentor - on work placements.

Formal teaching takes place in Tithebarn Street in the city centre campus. This vibrant location offers everything you could possibly need during your studies. The resident Avril Robarts library, for example, is open 24/7 during semesters and has computer rooms, learning spaces and on site catering facilities.

This flexible, three-year Master's programme blends online, distance learning with hands-on clinical training and aims to support students' ongoing clinical work at the same time as developing their abilities.

Degree information

Year One provides students with the basic knowledge required in paediatric dentistry and teaches some of the clinical techniques needed in a laboratory setting. Year Two encourages more advanced and complex treatment planning and looks at other aspects of good patient care such as clinical governance. Year Three consolidates the learning to date and provides the theoretical experience required for graduates to understand, critically appraise and potentially carry out research.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of seven core modules (120 credits), and a research project/dissertation (60 credits). The PG Diploma consists of seven core modules (120 credits); two years part-time. The PG Certificate consists of four core modules (60 credits); one year part-time. There are no optional modules for this programme.

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of approximately 10,000–12,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of seminars, online learning and hands-on sessions in our skills laboratory. Assessment will be through written and practical tests, logbook of patients treated in practice, case presentations, essay, and vivas throughout the programme.

Careers

The first cohort of students on the Paediatric Dentistry MSc are due to graduate in 2016, therefore no information on graduate destinations is currently available.

However, destinations of recent graduates of the institute’s Paediatric Dentistry Postgraduate Certificate (which this new programme supersedes) include: specialist registrar; senior dental officer, community dentistry; and clinical lead for dental salaried services.

Employability
As well as enhancing your clinical skills, this programme also supports the development of transferable skills such as the use of electronic resources, giving presentations and academic writing.

This is the only blended learning MSc programme to provide further training in paediatric dentistry, designed to support working dentists. The programme allows students to learn from expert teaching staff including: the BSPD editor for the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry; a committee member for Paediatric Dental Care Pathways and Level II Practitioners in Paediatric Dentistry; MPaedDent examiners; BSPD representative for Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry (IACSD); a member of The Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD).

The emphasis is on the management of paediatric patients with cardiorespiratory, neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. Flexibility in selection of modules allows for physiotherapists with particular interests to be accommodated.

Degree information

This MSc offers physiotherapy students the opportunity to extend their understanding of key areas in this field, including challenging the foundations of established but poorly justified treatments, developing and undertaking clinical research and practice, learning about new and emerging treatment options, and enjoying the mentorship of recognised experts in paediatric physiotherapy.

This course in detail

You will focus on developing a knowledge base in children’s nursing, which is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

During Year 1 you will undertake modules at Level 6 (honours level), and in the subsequent two years your modules will be at Level 7 (masters degree level). You may be able to complete the degree in less that three years if you offer evidence of relevant prior learning (AP(E)L). This may have been achieved through relevant degree level study and/or experience. If you wish to study part-time, you can complete the degree over a maximum duration of five years.

You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of children’s nursing. This will be informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field. You will acquire specific skills, knowledge and competence in relation to children’s nursing. Your learning will be enquiry focused, helping you to develop as a reflective, innovative, confident and self-aware practitioner.

You will complete a master’s-level research project involving primary data collection; a critical review of the literature; or other scholarly output.

Teaching and learning

Oxford Brookes teaches a very wide range of pre-qualification and foundation courses including health and social care, nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, osteopathy, operating department practice, paramedic emergency care, and social work.
