The Early Years Education (Online) MA offers exceptional career development opportunities for early childhood practitioners and other professionals worldwide. This new programme builds upon the success of our established campus-based Early Years Education MA programme.

About this degree

This Master's degree offers students the opportunity to enhance their professional development and understanding of national and global issues in early learning, early years policy and curricula; critically evaluate a range of literature about young children’s learning and best practice in early education; develop their understanding of research methodology with and about young children; conduct their own small-scale research project in a setting of their own choice.

Students can expect to study an average of 300 hours per 30-credit module and 600 hours for the Dissertation. The number of weekly study hours can vary during the programme. As a general guide, students following the suggested 2-year programme structure can expect to study 7-14 hours per week and 1-2 hours per day.

The range of modules is designed to reflect the range of expertise and specialisms within the Early Childhood Directorate teaching team, who are passionate about using insights from their research to enhance your learning experience. You will have the opportunity to develop your own research and specialist areas of expertise, based on personal interests and professional experiences. We encourage you to gain experience as a researcher, and there may be opportunities to get involved in research projects and student internships within the Faculty of Education.

You will study a core module at the outset which will help you develop an understanding of Level 7 learning and the importance of reflection on practice, as you begin to develop effective Level 7 writing skills and abilities.

Suitability

The MA attracts a wide range of graduates from a variety of backgrounds not necessarily Early Years related but those who wish to expand and deepen their knowledge of young children from birth to 8 years. Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to engage in extracurricular activities hosted by the University such as conferences, open lectures, and visits to early years settings.

Format

You'll study using a variety of learning and teaching strategies involving you as an active participant in the process of learning and teaching depending upon the mode of delivery. Modules typically consist of a series of lectures, workshops and seminars which are delivered over the course of seven weeks. Some modules may be offered on a blended basis combining face to face Saturday sessions with access to online learning resources. Blended delivery is particularly appropriate where the module content demands experiential learning and some sessions may include field work as well as classroom based activities. It is also appropriate for modules such as the Negotiated Project where students are encouraged to further their own specific research interests with one-to-one tutor support.

All learning will be supported through the use of the University Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard) as well as other digital media. Individual tutorials are offered to students in all modules and individual supervision forms an essential part of work on the dissertation. The module tutor or the Programme Director will act as your personal tutor.

Assessment

The programme uses a range of assessment types including presentations, action research reports, reflective commentaries, literature reviews and document analysis. You will also complete a 15,000 word dissertation based on your research interests.

This postgraduate qualification is designed for those who want to develop their understanding and knowledge of early years education and care. It provides ideal training and staff development pertinent to those working with young children and their families in a range of settings and situations.

Course Overview

The degree is delivered so that students can integrate work commitments and study. The course combines face-to-face delivery at the University with independent study by the student from home. Lectures/ workshops are delivered as twilight/ evening sessions or on the weekend.

The course also uses blended learning where students use online resources provided by the tutors to complement and extend classroom learning.

The MA Early Years Education and Care programme takes a critical and analytic overview of children’s early learning and care and sets this in the context of social learning and societal influences. Students will be encouraged to take a critical approach to research, theories and beliefs about children’s learning. The crucial role of adults in that learning process, as policy makers and pedagogues, will be deconstructed and debated. The course focuses on the remarkable skills of young children as powerful and competent learners; studying what they learn, how they learn, why they learn.

The programme has themes and principles which run throughout and which are linked to the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child:
-The well-being of the child
-The role of the reflective and self-critical adult in children’s early learning and well-being
-The core values that underpin all adult relationships with children: inclusion, anti-oppressive practice, respect for the child

These are threads that run through the programme, allowing students to appreciate the critical relationship between the integrative approach to children’s learning and good practice in early years settings.

This is an ideal qualification for teachers, LSAs, nursery personnel, child-minders, lecturers and course providers, Flying Start personnel and anyone interested in working with young children and their families.

The course has been designed by the School of Early Years to support professionals deliver high quality early childhood provision and deliver effective child care and education policy and initiatives However the multidisciplinary and cross-curricular nature of the course, as well as the strong emphasis on reflection, evaluation, analysis and research provide students with important transferable skills. The degree’s focus on undertaking research, academic writing skills and oral presentation skills also allow students to develop skills which are sought by employers and are transferable to several different career situations.

The course is delivered by tutors who have extensive experience of working with young children in a range of early years settings and who also have delivered postgraduate training and qualifications successfully for several years.

Assessment

The assignments are varied and designed to assess a range of different skills including critical reflection, evaluation and analysis. Our MEd programmes are part-time over three years. Students are expected to attain 60 credits per year resulting in 180 credits.

You’ll attend a two-day induction course on campus, followed by an introductory week which will be online.

The course is delivered through the web, using Myplace, the University’s virtual learning environment.

Year 1

Students undertake three compulsory classes each worth 20 credits. This will be one class per semester. It will involve participating in weekly online seminars delivered via My Place. The seminars are scheduled in the evening to accommodate working professionals. In total each class should take 200 hours including self-study.

Students who decide to complete their studies after one year will graduate with a Postgraduate Certificate.

Year 2

Students undertake three classes each worth 20 credits. This will usually consist of two optional classes and a compulsory class Research Methods & Reasoning. The compulsory class equips students with the necessary basis for undertaking a dissertation at Masters level.

Research Methods & Reasoning is delivered entirely online via Myplace during semester one.

As per year one, students will undertake one class per semester. The expected study time is the same as in year one.

Students who decide to complete their studies at the end of year two will graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma.

Year 3

You’ll carry out a research dissertation in a subject area of your choice worth 60 credits. We'll allocate a supervisor for one-to-one support while you carry out and report your dissertation. We endeavour to match you with the best fit for your specialist area.

You can complete your final dissertation by distance learning. This provides our students with the flexibility to complete their studies around work commitments.

Course content

This course offers teachers and high achieving BACP graduates the chance to specialise further in their field and best meet the needs of children in nursery and early primary school.

The first year explores contemporary and historical perspectives in relation to what matters in early education and how these relate to early years practice.

The second year looks in depth at how children learn from pre-birth and ways that teachers can use their knowledge of children as learners, the wider life of families and communities to lead pedagogy and work alongside stakeholders to develop learning.

Learning & teaching

You'll attend a two-day induction course on campus, followed by a trial week before the first class.

The rest of the course is delivered through the web using the University’s online learning platform. You’ll have a weekly student-tutor chat session. You’ll also have the opportunity to work collaboratively on weekly tasks within a virtual learning environment. The course will have a password-protected site accessible to tutors and students and our web developer only.

For our distance learning delivery the student group will participate in online seminars.

The EYITT is a government endorsed scheme through which you will gain Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS). This will allow you to teach the Early Years Foundation Stage in an early years setting.

Route 1: University-Led

This full-time route is for new graduates and career changers who will not be employed in the early years sector during the training. It is based at the University of Warwick and includes 120 placement days in schools and early years settings.

Route 2: Employer-Led

This part-time route is for graduates who are already employed in an early years setting/early years department of a school within a 50 mile radius of our campus (CV4 8EE). It provides hands-on training in an employment setting. This route is also available to childminders. Occasionally we can provide you with support in finding employment while you study through this route.

Information for Employers
-As an employer you will receive £7,000 (funding from the government) to cover the cost of your 16 University days and 6 week alternative placement.
-As a partner, the employer will be entitled to attend any of our Early Years CPD for free.
-A qualification in Early Years Teaching has a strong element in the Ofsted inspection.
-There is more flexibility with Early Year Teachers, ratios 1:13 compared to 1:8.
-Parents will be encouraged in their decision making process on selecting a nursery with staff who have obtained qualifications such as the EYITT.

Route 3: Assessment Only

This short route is for experienced graduates who are already employed in an early years setting/early years department of a school, and are able to demonstrate the Early Years Teaching Standards without further training.

The MA in Pedagogy is designed for anyone who is involved in teaching and learning. There is a choice of modes of delivery to meet the needs of practitioners in all locations and phases of schooling: face to face, blended (combining elements of intensive face-to-face learning on study days with online learning) or an online programme.

This MA offers teachers and other education professionals - including teaching assistants, mentors and librarians - a choice of pathways related to their practice at all stages in their careers. The programme supports their learning and develops their ability to reflect critically on classroom practice.

The focus throughout the course is on developing pedagogical understanding as reflective practitioners. This degree will give students a wider understanding of key issues in the field of education in which their practice is located.

Throughout, students will develop a critical understanding of research methodology as they plan and conduct a small-scale enquiry into an issue of their choice. This will enable the student to further their own understanding of their practice whilst also having the opportunity to contribute to the wider contexts in which they work.

As they generate new knowledge, students will contribute to pedagogical theory and practice.

Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) will be awarded to graduates who have been judged to have met all of the Teachers' Standards Early Years).

About this programme

Early Years Teachers will be specialists in early childhood development and the EYFS Framework. As highly skilled graduate leaders, they will be responsible for facilitating and leading high quality professional practice in early years settings. Participants will leave the programme as reflective practitioners who work with integrity, fostering positive relationships with parents/carers and children as well as other professionals.

Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits.

Participants will be working to a timetable of no more than 90 per cent of full time working hours and be released for training and study days. Students take three core modules (60 credits total). In addition to this, students will undertake placements in at least one other setting, in order to cover the full 0-5 age range.

Where less than 60 credits are achieved at Master’s level (level 7), but are successfully passed at undergraduate/Bachelor’s level (level 6), a Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PgCE) will be awarded.

An additional pathway is also available for those who wish to study full-time.

What will you study?

You will gain a greater understanding of what it is to be an early years teacher within the Early Years Foundation Stage and the knowledge that underpins the delivery of this to babies and children in the birth to five years age range. Topics covered include, safeguarding and child protection, early literacy and phonics, early maths, personalised progress, tracking and leading and supporting. 

As an early years teacher, you play an essential role in children's development between birth and the age of five, providing high-quality early education. By training to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage whilst undertaking the course, you will learn how to use your knowledge and skills to ensure children benefit from a high standard of early years teaching.

The Graduate Employment Based pathway is designed for graduates working in an early years setting who require additional training and further experience to demonstrate the Early Years Teacher Standards.

You will attend taught sessions once a week, usually a Friday from 9.00am until 5.00pm.

Trainees will also be required to undertake a the minimum of a two-week alternative placement in an appropriate early years setting as well as 10 days in a Key Stage 1 school. However, depending on experience this may be extended to four weeks if it is identified that the trainee requires more experience in a specific age group within an early years setting. 

Early years teachers will be specialists in birth to five years old and will be ideally placed to fulfill the needs of employers in private and independent settings and schools to provide high quality education and care for babies and young children.

Assessment

Professional placement in early years setting

  • You will receive formative feedback against the Early Years Teachers' Standards. You will be given regular feedback against these, with targets that enable you to grow in confidence and ability.
  • At the end of your training you will be summatively assessed against the Early Years Teachers' Standards. This will be used as a key part of the decision to recommend you for Early Years Teacher Status.

PGCE Academic Modules

  • You will complete one assignment in each of the level 7 modules. These assignments are designed to deepen your understanding of teaching through engaging with evidence in the context of your own practice.
