This course is for experienced internal communication practitioners or PR professionals who want to develop their strategic internal  communication and management skills. It provides those working in internal communications with a platform for continuous development.

On this course, you will take an in-depth look at the role that internal communication plays in organisations and in particular those going through change. You will develop your ability to use research to inform effective internal communication strategies and develop successful plans. The course focuses on core topics such as: internal communication; audit; change management theory; using research to inform and help develop internal communication strategies; moving from one-way communications to engagement; psychology of communication and the role of technology.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Twenty hours of on campus teaching comprises a variety of approaches including lectures, workshops, group work and input from senior practitioners and QMU academics. Work is set and contact maintained between teaching blocks through online discussions.

CIPR Internal Communication Diploma students learn alongside other CIPR and MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations students ensuring that you benefit from sharing experiences and develop a network of colleagues. Teaching hours and attendance

Teaching is normally delivered in one day blocks three/ four times a year.

Work with external clients on live projects 

Employers require graduates who possess a range of skills and knowledge, including experience in the workplace. To ensure you develop into a work-ready graduate for the PR or communications industry, you will have the opportunity to work on two live projects: (i) you will work on Live Client Brief as part of an account team on a live PR project under the guidance of an academic tutor who is also an experienced PR manager; and (ii) within Media Relations, you will work with an external client to prepare a media pack containing original material for the media, including a press release, social media press release, Q&A, social media content and photography for distribution to target media, as well as devise a media relations strategy for your client. These live projects will enable you to develop practical PR skills to enhance your employability, as well as develop client management skills. You will be supported by an academic tutor who is also an experienced PR consultancy manager.

Behind-the-scenes business visits

As a Masters student of the Business School, you have the opportunity to participate in a number of free business visits that allow you to see behind the scenes of real companies and learn about how these businesses are structured and operate. The business visit programme varies each year, the following are indicative of the type of business visits that are available:

  • Manchester United Football Club – museum and stadium tour plus guest speaker on business operations
  • Robinson’s Brewery – tour of 175 year old family run brewery and guest speaker
  • BBC at MediaCityUK - tour of BBC studios at MediaCityUK with an insight into how TV broadcasting works.
  • Jaguar LandRover - tour of the LandRover factory including every stage of the assembly process to the finished product.

Professional development weeks

The Faculty of Business and Law hosts two Professional Development Weeks annually. Free and open to all students, this includes a festival of skills-development activities, practical support in developing your CV and employability skills, and the opportunity to network with actively recruiting graduate employers. 

Consultancy dissertation 

The dissertation unit is your chance to undertake a consultancy dissertation, which could be based on a current or potential employer and aligned to your career goals in a specific sector, organisation or industry.

Expert guest lectures

A number of guest lectures take place each year with leading speakers from industry. The Business School shares extensive links with over 25 professional bodies including the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and the Public Relations Communications Association (PRCA). We invite speakers from various organisations onto campus as guest lecturers to share their knowledge with current Masters students, including practitioners from leading PR consultancies, senior in-house experts, digital specialists, journalists from local media including the BBC, and alumni now working in the PR or communications field.

Postgraduate internship programme

All Masters students at the Business School are encouraged to undertake an optional, short-term internship with a real business in order to develop relevant experience relating to their studies.

A dedicated Placement and Project Coordinator will guide you through this process, by sourcing and advertising suitable roles throughout the year, offering 1-2-1 application advice, and supporting you to make speculative applications to source your own Internships.

Internships can be part-time or full-time but must fit around your scheduled classes.

Who is it for?

The course develops creative design literate engineers, scientists and management postgraduates. It is suitable for graduates from a variety of disciplines who recognise the importance of how creative practice and process can improve product and service development.

Why this course?

The aim of this Master of Design (MDes) programme in Innovation and Creativity in Industry is to equip candidates with skills and capabilities in, and knowledge of, fact-based creative design approaches to improve organisation effectiveness. The programme has been developed in conjunction with the University of Arts London (UAL) through the Centre for Competitive Creative Design, which aims to inspire organisations to apply creative design capability and enhance competitiveness.

There is a strong emphasis on applying knowledge in the industrial or business environment and the programme is taught in the context of practical application. Students will develop a working knowledge of the use of a comprehensive range of industry standard ICT tools and practices to formally capture and re-use knowledge, information and data. Students will also benefit from practical experience in creative design practices through the group project (dissertation for part-time students). In addition, the extensive individual thesis project provides industry-led education in creative design applications.

The primary focus of the Centre for Competitive Creative Design is embedding state-of-the-art design-led innovation practice, developed through research and industry collaboration, within business and education to improve commercial performance and develop future innovation leaders.

The course comprises eight one-week assessed modules a group design project, which includes individual concept development through collaboration, and an individual design project resulting in a public exhibition.

Group project

The group project experience is highly valued by both students and prospective employers. Teams of students work to solve an industrial problem. The project applies technical knowledge and provides training in teamwork and the opportunity to develop non-technical aspects of the taught programme. Part-time students can prepare a dissertation on an agreed topic in place of the group project.

What will you study on the MSc/PGDip/PGCert Corporate and Marketing Communications?
The course allows you to choose from a range of optional modules which build upon the content of the core modules and explore more specialised and niche aspects of communications. For example if you want to focus on marketing communications then modules on advertising, experiential marketing and events would be an appropriate route to take. If you have an interest in consumers and stakeholders within a communications context then modules on psychology, analytics and research would suit you. For a more strategic communications approach then modules on PR, crisis communications and cross-cultural communication would be the pathway to follow. You will also have the opportunity to complete a dissertation project in an area of marketing communications that you have a particular interest in and matches with your career specialism.

How will Corporate and Marketing Communications be taught?

The course features a number of different modes of learning that help enhance your understanding of the subject. You will learn how states and their governments communicate in international politics and how they shape long term strategies in a range of fields from military to diplomatic to aid and development. This includes preparing for conflict between states or with insurgent groups, communicating a path during hostilities, transitioning through post-conflict situations and also how states use diplomacy, culture and economics to avoid conflict and engage in treaty and trade negotiations. You will also encounter crisis communications: how to shape strategic responses to natural disasters, terror attacks, and military invasions. To appreciate this complex field from multiple perspectives, students will further discover how insurgent and revolutionary movements think about and put into practice their communications strategies with populations and states.

Along with subject matter expertise, students will develop transferable analytic, research and practical skills in a dynamic and rigorous intellectual environment.

Description

The aim of this course is to enhance knowledge of a broad range of subjects and approaches to engaging with international politics today.

The course is available to both full- and part-time students, and is available as an MA, Postgraduate Diploma, or Postgraduate Certificate. 

The MA course comprises modules that total 180 credits. You will take two 40 credits worth of required modules, and a further 40 credits of optional modules. These credits may be chosen from a wide range of modules available in the Department of War Studies. MA students are also required to take a 15,000-word research dissertation on a topic of Strategic Communications (60 credits).

Course format and assessment

Teaching

Per 40-credit required module, you will typically receive two hours per week over two ten week terms. This can be split into one lecture and one seminar or combinations thereof or one lecture followed by a case study. In addition to this you can expect 360 hours of self-study. 

Per 20-credit module optional module, you will typically receive two hours per week over one ten week term. This can be split into one lecture and one seminar or combinations thereof. A few options are formatted to run as intensive weekend sessions. In addition to this you can expect 180 hours of self-study. 

Per 40-credit optional module, you will typically receive two hours per week over two ten week terms. This can be split into one lecture and one seminar or one lecture and one case study or combinations thereof. Some options are formatted to run as intensive weekend sessions. In addition to this you can expect 360 hours of self-study. 

For the Dissertation module, you will typically receive 12 hours worth of traning workshops and/or supervision. In addition to this you can expect 588 hours of self-study. 

Typically 1 credit equals 10 hours of work.

 

Assessments 

Assessment methods will depend on the modules selected. The primary method of assessment for this course is a combination of essays, project work, class participation, and/or exams. The dissertation module assessment will be assessed solely on the dissertation (100%).
