Course overview

This Masters course takes a social science approach to tourism and hospitality and combines it with practical skills for the workplace. We have designed our stimulating course to give you a head start in the tourism and hospitality sectors, which are part of one of the world’s largest industries.

We welcome applications from graduates of any discipline. You will learn theoretical approaches through modules such as ‘Critical Tourism Theory and Methods’ and ‘International Tourism and Development’. There is also a core module in ‘Hospitality Management Studies’. We organise field trips and company visits to put your learning into context and we offer an optional work-based learning module.

The final phase of the course is a major project that you negotiate with your tutors to reflect your particular interests and chosen career path. For example, your project could have special relevance to the skill sets required by hotel managers, resort coordinators or restaurant entrepreneurs.

It includes a board room as well as bookable areas to hold meetings and to meet with staff and visitors from outside the University.

University Library Services
The St Peter’s Library is excellent for tourism and there’s a full-time librarian who is dedicated to the Business and Tourism sections.
Further resources are available at the main Murray Library, which has a total of over 430,000 books with many more available through the inter-library loan service. You will benefit from a wide range of journals and periodicals, many of them in an online format. The University spends around £1 million every year on new books and resources.

IT provision
When it comes to IT provision you can take your pick from hundreds of PCs as well as Apple Macs in the David Goldman Informatics Centre and St Peter’s Library. There are also free WiFi zones throughout the campus. If you have any problems, just ask the friendly helpdesk team.

You don’t need to have previously studied hospitality, events or tourism management and prior work experience is not required.

Teaching and learning

The innovative learning experience on this course is very much student-centred and interactive. You will take part in multicultural group work, case studies, workshops, seminars, lectures, events and one-to-one tutorials. Alumni and senior industry professionals contribute to the programme through guest lectures. You will have the opportunity to be personally mentored by an industry leader.

Approach to assessment

Assessment is based predominantly on individual coursework and the dissertation. There is an examination in the Strategic Financial Management module.

Field trips

Each year, there is a series of field trips to events such as the World Travel Market and visits to destinations, attractions, hotels, museums and the corporate office of a leading international hotel company.

Field trips are optional and are paid for by the student.

Attendance pattern

The course is suitable if you are looking to convert from another subject area and pursue a future career in hospitality or if you already have a grounding in hospitality or related subject areas such as business, management, events, tourism or sport.

Course structure

Full-time students attend workshops two days per week, while the part-time route usually requires one day per week. Some modules may be delivered intensively over several consecutive days.

For international students, the MSc also offers an extended masters route with English language study for between two and sixth months before the course begins.

Professional-Based Learning Module:

All credit-based postgraduate courses at the School of Sport and Service Management offer the Professional-Based Learning module.

The module offers you an opportunity to undertake practical experience in a work environment and gain invaluable first-hand knowledge. It is designed to help you engage with the process of planning and delivering expertise in practice, and to reflect upon and take steps to improve your academic, personal and professional skills.

In Semester 1 (September–January) you will have classes on CV development, interview skills, target setting, reflective practice and experiential learning, leading to 100 hours of professional experience in Semester 2 (February–June). This experience could take the form of a part-time job, an unpaid internship, a volunteering opportunity in the university or time as a mentee in your chosen industry. You can also take this module as part of a live consultancy in connection with one of your tourism, sport, hospitality or event modules, either in the UK or a School of Sport and Service Management project overseas.

Our school-based Employability Hub will be on hand to assist you in securing an experience that best meets your career goals and aspirations. International Tourism and Hospitality Management Top-up

If you already hold the Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management from either the Confederation for Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) or the Organisations for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM) you can top-up your qualification to a full MSc by studying a research methods module and researching and writing a 20,000 word dissertation.

The degree is jointly delivered with ESHotels in Paris enabling you to integrate with students from this course when you jointly participate on a field trip.

Part-time = two modules a year for three years then dissertation in Year 4; or four modules in Year 1 then two modules plus the dissertation in Year 2, with dissertation extending into Year 3.

Teaching and learning

Classroom teaching includes a mix of traditional lectures, seminars, workshops and guest lectures from industry stakeholders. We undertake a real life business development scenario with our industry partner Merlin Entertainments and undertake a residential field trip in Semester 2.

The nature of the teaching and assessment will allow you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to their preferred setting (e.g. public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; UK, European or International).

We are currently negotiating a partnership with InHolland University, Amsterdam, where you could study Semester 1 in Amsterdam and complete Semester 2 and the dissertation at LSBU (This option is open to UK and EU students only).

Academic expertise

Department staff are experts in their respective fields of urban, environment, tourism, heritage and leisure and related educational policy. Many have professional affiliations, appointed positions and research links, for example with the Association for Tourism in Higher Education, Local Economy, The Landscape Research Group, The Organisation for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM), the Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality, the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Tourism Society. We integrate these links into our teaching wherever possible.

Tools and knowledge

The course develops the appropriate skills, tools and knowledge to operate innovatively in the global tourism and hospitality environments. The nature of the teaching and assessment allows you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to your preferred setting (e.g public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; related policy and government organisations; UK, European or international).

Placements

If you are a home or EU student you may wish to consider undertaking a voluntary year-long work placement in the UK or overseas to gain, extend or seek variety in your experience within the industry prior to studying with us. If you undertake such a placement you may use this as the basis for an extended industry-related management project instead of the traditional dissertation. This is subject to prior approval by the Course Director and must be an investigation into an aspect of management that is worthy of investigation and is subject to the usual academic discipline.

This option is not open to overseas students, as Home Office regulations mean that overseas students are unable to get a visa for the placement year.

Professional links

We have a wide range of industry speakers on the course and you undertake a range of projects that bring you into contact with managers from the sector. In particular, you'll undertake a research project for the global attractions company Merlin Entertainments in Semester 1 where you analyse their operations and policies, develop solutions to a particular challenge and report back directly to their managers.

International Tourism as a career

The MSc in International Hospitality Management is for those with a passion for delivering quality in the hospitality sector and who wish to accelerate their careers. Attendance

Commencing in early September, the course starts with an induction period of three days duration. As a full time student you will complete the master’s degree in three semesters / one calendar year. Part time students will complete a maximum of two modules per semester and it will take six semesters 2 to 2½ years.

A key strength of the MSc is that it is modular in structure and delivered in blended learning mode, with all modules being taught in 3 day intensive blocks.

Our novel delivery is designed to fit around your home and work life as a mature student. We recognise that being able to schedule study around your life-needs is of vital importance for academic success. Accordingly we have designed our master’s programmes to be delivered in compact and intensive three day immersive learning experiences.

The block delivered modules are supported with online discussion groups and three half day learning sets (tutorial learning support) per module. These days are set to meet with your tutors and student groups to develop your assessed work.

Semester three includes the three day learning block on research methods followed by a series of support meetings with your dissertation or business project supervisor between June and September.

Our Tourism and Hospitality MSc brings together a rigorous social science approach with the development of skills that are needed by, for example, restaurant entrepreneurs, resort coordinators and hotel managers.

We welcome applications from graduates of any discipline. You will study theoretical approaches through modules such as ‘Critical Tourism Theory and Methods’ and ‘International Tourism and Development’. There is a core module in ‘Hospitality Management Studies’ and an optional module with a focus on work-based learning. You will graduate equipped with the skills to evaluate and analyse the international hospitality sector from a managerial, operational and organisational perspective.

The structure of our Euromasters programme includes the opportunity to undertake a placement in industry between the two years of study.

This experience gives students (particularly those with little prior work experience) a significant advantage in terms of employability upon graduation.

International hospitality is challenging, dynamic and expanding rapidly. It also offers a wide range of exciting employment opportunities.

On this course, you will choose the pathway that best suits you – one that is tailored to suit your previous qualifications and experience.

Pathway A:

If you are new to the industry and your qualifications are not related to hospitality or tourism, then you will take this pathway. This course will teach you about managing the operational aspects of the industry and incorporated the study of related tourism and events environments.

Pathway B:

If you have an undergraduate degree in hospitality or tourism management and you wish to continue your studies then this will be your pathway. In addition to operational management, you will focus on the long-term strategic development of hospitality operations and will equip you to engage in continuing development using a broad range of intellectual and study skills.

You will also take part in a five-day study trip to a European city destination in order to carry out research related to one or more of your course assessments. Previous study visits have taken students to Paris, Madrid, Lisbon, Seville, Palma, Amsterdam and Rome. The cost of this residential visit it include in the course fees.
