The course is taught over one year, full time, by a mix of Basins Group staff and industry professionals. A range of geological and geophysical subjects are taught covering the hydrocarbon industry value chain from acquisition, exploration and appraisal to development and production. A multidisciplinary approach takes students through investigation of outcrop analogues as well as geophysical investigation of subsurface hydrocarbon systems.

The course is aimed at recent graduates as well as individuals with some industrial experience. Content is advised on by industrial partners with the aim of maintaining relevance to company needs. As part of the course training is provided in technical areas such as core logging and industry standard software. The course provides an thorough grounding for work in the hydrocarbon industry, or further PhD research.

This course combines the teaching and research strengths of our School. We train you in methods that will support the oil industry's efforts to maximise recovery from oil and gas fields and extend the life of existing fields.

This Petroleum Geoscience course pathway meets industry's demand for skilled personnel by training graduates with specialist, research-based knowledge in appraisal, development and production as well as the fundamentals of reservoir engineering.

The course concentrates on how to characterise and model a reservoir and fluid flows. We also explore the impact of recovery mechanisms and dynamic displacement. You will also take units in seismic interpretation.

Career opportunities

The petroleum industry is the largest employer of earth science graduates, with good employment prospects in the United Kingdom and overseas in oil companies, consultancies, service companies, government bodies, the financial sector, and in teaching and research. During the research project students normally have the opportunity to work within sponsor oil company offices, gaining valuable industrial experience. The MSc course has a very strong track record for employability.

In semester 1, we typically have oil companies visiting the School to provide careers information and seek applications (typically BG, BP, Shell, ConocoPhillips, Exxon, Hess, Talsiman, Neftex, Fugro etc). Some also interview in the University. This is in addition to the University career fairs and other employment events.

Petroleum Geoscience and Engineering at the University of Manchester has well-established links with the petroleum industry. Research is funded by a large number of international oil companies. Guest speakers are invited on a regular basis to the department. There is also an AAPG Student Chapter , PESGB Student Chapter, SPE Chapter and EAGE Chapter, which arrange meetings throughout the year.

Many of the academic staff teaching on the course have considerable petroleum industry experience or consult for the oil industry. In addition the teaching team has a very strong group of external lecturers, who are all active consultants or employees in the petroleum industry, and who bring considerable expertise and industrial links.

BP staff teach on the course, Shell teaches the 'Malampaya oil game' which offers an insight into the industry.

Our courses share a common set of core taught course units to provide you with a strong grounding in the quantitative and qualitative skills required to address environmental questions in additional to subject-specific knowledge and understanding.

This shared core taught element means it is possible to swop between the courses.

Following the taught element you have the opportunity to apply your skills and knowledge in a research project. If you choose the Masters in Applications in Environmental Sciences you will undertake a second project, which can involve a placement in industry.

Aims

The aim of this programme is to
-Provide interdisciplinary foundation training for students from a natural science or engineering background intending to pursue a career, with or without further postgraduate training, in pollution control, environmental management or resource conservation.
-Provide an understanding of the nature of explanation in social science, natural science and engineering as applied to research or other investigative activity in pollution control and environmental management.
-Provide generic and subject-specific training in research design and methods of data collection and analysis.
-Provide subject-specific training in the social, economic, legal, planning and engineering dimensions of environmental protection and resource conservation tailored to the student's research interests and/or career needs.
-Provide subject-specific training on how natural systems function and the perturbations to those systems arising from human activity, again tailored to the student's research interests and/or career needs.
-Meet the needs of employers that require an ability to bring sound science and current thinking to environmental problems.
-Foster interdisciplinary study within the School and within the University through provision of high quality students to carry out projects.
-Enable the student systematically to research the area of environmental pollution via the literature and create an ordered structured report on a subject of relevance to the course and their own interests.

Career opportunities

Governments, industry and society, in all countries, are increasingly aware of the importance of securing sustainable development through cost-effective pollution controls and resource conservation. As a result, there is a growing need, internationally, for suitably qualified personnel in the environmental authorities of central and local government, industry and commerce, consultancy and research. Moreover, the resulting legal requirements on the part of governments and industry to conform to national and international agreements and regulations means that such demand will remain even during periods of economic austerity and retrenchment.

Employers are increasingly requiring environmental science graduates to have a strong grounding in the quantitative and qualitative skills required to address environmental questions in additional to subject-specific knowledge and understanding. Our programmes address these requirements through a core of skills-based modules with the emphasis on synthesis.

Graduates from the existing Pollution and Environmental Control Masters have been very successful in obtaining relevant environment-related employment in areas such as industry, local and central authorities, the regulatory sector, consultancies, education and research. Typically, between 20 and 30% of students completing the programme undertake postgraduate research immediately after graduation.

We expect that graduates from the new Applications in Environmental Science Masters will be attractive to employers in the environmental authorities of central and local government, industry and commerce, consultancy and research. The experience gained during an industrial placement will be especially valuable to employers.

The programme will advance your scientific understanding and technical skills within an entrepreneurial framework of teaching and training in business skills. The programme will produce science students with awareness and experience of the technology transfer process, well-prepared for work in entrepreneurial high-technology companies. Graduates will understand the nature of enterprise, its growth and development. You will also have developed entrepreneurial skills and have knowledge of the business development process from inception to establishment and long-term management.

The environmental science and technology sector ranges from the fast-moving competitive marketplace for energy efficiency and effective solutions to air, water and land pollution, to the variably paced greening of every other facet of human activity in the region. This programme represents an innovative approach to meeting these rapidly evolving needs in the context of environmental science and technology. This full-time, one-year programme has been designed to appeal to scientists and engineers who would like to develop their entrepreneurial skills and go on to either develop their own business or work for a company where enterprise and entrepreneurship is valued. It will also appeal to companies who want to use the programme to develop their staff for more entrepreneurial roles, for example where an in-company project is ready for commercial development/exploitation.
