There are many employment options with an environmental science degree which can include regulating the environment across industry areas at government and local level. The first course of its kind to be accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, this taught Masters course is designed to equip you with the necessary skills in green chemistry and green chemical technology to prepare you for a range of different careers in research, process development, environmental services, manufacturing, law, consultancy and government.

Course Content

The MSc is a one year full time course consisting of taught material and a substantial research project. Teaching is delivered by academic experts within the Department of Chemistry as well as external experts from other academic institutions and industry. The Teaching component of the course is delivered via a mix of lectures, workshops, seminars and practical work. You will learn about the key principles of green chemistry and the importance of sustainable technology in a variety of areas. In addition to this, you will also have the opportunity to enhance your transferable skills.

Assessment methods include a closed examination, written assignments, presentations, posters and practical work.

The MSc course has been running for over ten years over which time there has been a large increase in the range of nationalities represented. The content of the course is globally relevant and so attracts applications from around the world from people keen to develop their own knowledge to pass on when they return to their home country. Research Project

A key part of the MSc in Green Chemistry is the research project. The whole course is 180 credits and the research project accounts for 100 of these so is a very significant part of the programme.

Students are able to choose from a range of project areas in order to carry out research in their area of interest. Projects will be supervised by an academic member of staff, and may also involve collaboration with industry. Projects are chosen in the early stages of the course and you will be allocated to a PAG - Project Area Group - that corresponds with larger research projects that are currently taking place within the Green Chemistry Centre.

Projects can vary each year, but examples of recent MSc students' research includes:
-Production of natural flavours and fragrances using biocatalysis in scCO2
-Clean synthetic strategies for production of pharmaceuticals
-Extraction and utilisation of high value chemicals from food waste
-Starbon technology for catalysis

Geochemistry is at the heart of earth sciences, and provides the techniques and knowledge that allow us to solve such fundamental questions as: how did life evolve; what was the chemistry of ancient atmospheres and oceans; how do we understand the rates and drivers of past and current climate change? It is the forensic part of earth science and the types of research questions are diverse and unlimited. This taught MSc degree provides postgraduate-level knowledge and skills training in geochemistry and modern geochemical methods. The course is aimed at providing high levels of practical laboratory skills training and extensive experience with state-ofthe-art equipment. This comprehensive and rigorous training is relevant preparation for a PhD in geochemistry by incorporating a lab-based research dissertation, and also for employment in industry through incorporation of economic and environmental geochemistry modules. If you have an interest in the earth in relation to minerals extraction Geophysics has plenty of scope to get involved in the profession itself and expertise required to explore different types of terrain but in a newly evolving landscape of assistive technology companies offering the latest methods of discovering production and risk issues beneath the earths surface. You learn these latest methods of finding out data to understand risk and potential engineering issues in difficult to reach places. Signal processing uses the latest advances in sensor development to set up an alert system to monitor specific areas which are normally difficult to reach. Seismic processing looks at how the earth moves not only in times of earthquakes but natural movement from chemical reactions beneath the surface of the earth.

Borehole extraction is used in mineral extraction but also to determine if reserves are live or loading is safe and much and more. The skills you learn apply equally to current and future mineral extraction as they do to land and sea where extraction has historically taken place and where there is application for a different use from a remediated coal mine for example where loading can be critical to risk for future use. The programme equips you with skills in hydrocarbon, minerals and associated industries or research. You understand structure from near surface to deep interior learning from geophysical data analysis and interpretation.

If your environmental interests are concerned with pollution of any kind the Environmental Pollution and Remediation programme covers all you need to know to assess and analyse pollutants in our environment. You understand legislation and policies relating to pollution control, known environment risk assessment methods and regulation and regulators. In todays world there are many pollution issues not least of which is air pollution and its affect on our health and quality of life. Pollution control is essential in waterways and sea to ensure ecology and the food chain are not affected by major issues and soil can also be contaminated in many different ways over the longer term or in the short term.

Employment options include consultancy work to advise all types of organisations, sectors and business and support regulators at busy times. You can work as a regulator within central and local government and private business involved in operations that affect the environment, Sectors you are likely to work in cross energy, agriculture, fisheries, waterways, and specific polluting industrial areas. New technology is also becoming widely available to sense different pollutants in the environment with many different tools and options becoming available to experts in the area. Different countries require different levels of regulation but there is now a growing social need by major organisations devoted to health and quality of life such as UNEP to solve major pollution issues that put us as a species at risk.

You study environmental science related to pollution and remediation at UK and international level, studying hydrocarbon risk assessment and remediation, environmental analysis and EIA (environmental impact assessments). You look at legislation, risk and analysis.

This programme is delivered online to allow you to study flexibly from remote locations and anywhere in the world with internet access. You can study this to fit around your lifestyle and study at University of Aberdeen in Aberdeen city, a university providing wide ranging programmes specifically for the oil and gas industry since the 1970s. You study with world renowned academics who have closely studied, consulted with and researched the oil and gas industry. 

If you are interested in working in the oil and gas industry and you have a science or engineering background you might want to consider Oil and Gas Engineering at Master's degree level. This qualification takes you across the full life cycle of production and it contains quite a few employable elements and modules in themselves giving you a wide variety of skills and knowledge to take with you into employment. You will often work with other specialists on offshore drilling platforms and facilities recording information on drilling, researching the most productive areas, ensuring maintenance and health and safety and a constant flow from a well. You also oversee some of the decommissioning aspects to redundant equipment on site.

This is a highly skilled job with a lot of responsibility associated to it, and you receive excellent input from University of Aberdeen which has been teaching oil and gas related subjects since the inception of the oil and gas industry in Aberdeen since the 1970s.
