The Masters in Digital Media addresses issues in interactive design, interactive media, the internet and its applications, digital solutions for the industry and the public sector, usability design, effective digital media project management, digital audiences and audience research, social media management, digital media strategy, digital interactive television, mobile communications, and new media ownership. The course will provide skills in the relevant multimedia software.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

This MA/MSc Interactive Digital Media is of particular relevance to you as a practitioner or designer who wishes to develop and refine your practice in interaction design, installation, projection mapping, digital games and user-centred product design.

You will be encouraged to work with technology experimentally, creatively and collaboratively, and to apply emerging and existing technology in new and novel ways through personal fabrication, research and the experimental application. You will also have hands-on experience creating for Android, BlackBerry, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Playstation 3, Xbox, and websites. The course will provide skills in the relevant multimedia software, 3D graphics software, game engines/modelling packages such as Unity, UdK, 3D Studio Max and Maya. We have a dedicated facility for analysing and evaluating console games, containing PS3, XBox 360, and Wii consoles, new games titles and 3D LCD screens.

The course focuses on interaction design and its application to objects, spaces and communication. The emphasis is on technology-mediated communication between humans and objects or spaces, both real and virtual. You will be able to experiment and innovate along side exploring how theory underpins multimedia practice allowing you to ultimately challenge and test theories of interactivity. In the Business and Innovation unit you will gain an overview of the industry and new approaches to innovation.

Through the Technology Issues unit, you will explore the potential of digital technology and its application in new services or products or to enhance the functions, usability and aesthetics of existing ones through both group and cross-disciplinary work.

In the Research Process unit you will explore and challenge contemporary themes through theory and practice. There is a strong engagement with game theories (how games are made and what makes a good game), play, multimodality, artificial intelligence, and transmedia storytelling, user experience and computational design.

The Concept and Prototyping unit allows you to conduct a more involved 15-week project to develop and build a prototype, test an emerging technology or generate a concept.

Hypotheses, concepts or project ideas emerging from previous units will provide starting points for the Major Project, which is the final culmination of your investigations and is a substantial piece of self-managed work that embodies the integration of theory and practice, is underpinned by advanced practice-based methodologies and processes.

About the School of Engineering and Digital Arts

The School of Engineering and Digital Arts successfully combines modern engineering and technology with the exciting new field of digital media.

Established over 40 years ago, the School has developed a top-quality teaching and research base, receiving excellent ratings in both research and teaching assessments.

The School undertakes high-quality research that has had significant national and international impact, and our spread of expertise allows us to respond rapidly to new developments. Our 30 academic staff and over 130 postgraduate students and research staff provide an ideal focus to effectively support a high level of research activity. Course structure

The MSc begins in late September and finishes in September of the following year, and consists of approximately six months of coursework followed by a short period reserved for examinations and a four-month project.

EL881 - Android Application Design (15 credits)
This module is concerned with the design, implementation and testing of applications for the Android operating system. Students will work at all stages of the development life-cycle from inception to testing, whilst considering usability and device capabilities for a mobile application capable of meeting a functional specification.

EL882 - iPhone Application Design (15 credits)
This module is concerned with the design, implementation and testing of applications for the iPhone. Students will work at all stages of the development life-cycle from inception to testing, whilst considering usability and device capabilities for a mobile application capable of meeting a functional specification.

EL883 - Mobile Web Development (15 credits)

EL884 - Mobile Application Design Project (30 credits)
A mobile application will be developed for a platform agreed between the student and the supervisor either in an industrial context or within the School.

EL885 - Research Methods and Project Design for Mobile Apps (15 credits)

CO871 - Advanced Java for Programmers (15 credits)
This module provides for well-qualified computer science students entering the MSc programme from a range of backgrounds. These students will have good programming skills but will not necessarily have used Java or another object-oriented language extensively. This module seeks to ensure that students have the Java and object-oriented design skills necessary for the rest of their programme.

CO881 - Object-Oriented Programming (15 credits)
This module provides an introduction to object-oriented programming using the popular Java language. It is designed for beginners who have not studied computer programming before. By the end students will be able to develop simple programmes using Java. (Note that students with substantial prior experience of programming take module CO871 Advanced Java for Programmers[1] instead.)

EL890 - MSc Project (60 credits)
A major practical system will be developed either in an industrial context or within the department. There are no formal lectures - students will undertake the work in their own time under the regular supervision of a member of the academic staff and, where appropriate, industrial collaborators.

Assessment

The project module is examined by a presentation and dissertation. The Research Methods and Project Design module is examined by several components of continuous assessment. The other modules are assessed by examinations and smaller components of continuous assessment. MSc students must gain credits from all the modules (180 credits in total). For the PDip, you must gain at least 120 credits in total, and pass certain modules to meet the learning outcomes of the PDip programme.

This is a unique programme for the Digital Entertainment Industry in partnership with the University of Bath.

The Centre for Digital Entertainment (CDE) is a joint initiative between the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath and the National Centre for Computer Animation at Bournemouth University.

Awarded over £6 million pounds by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) the CDE's mission is to train the next generation of leaders in the computer animation, games and visual effects industries.

The CDE's innovative approach is to place Doctoral Candidates directly into companies, where you will work on real projects finding solutions to the challenges that face industry, supported by quality training drawn from a range of respected taught programmes from both Bournemouth and Bath University.

Through critical engagement with these projects and by contributing to new knowledge, Doctoral Candidates will leave the four year course with either an Engineering or Professional Doctorate (dependent on artistic or technical focus) and invaluable high level industry experience.

Doctoral Candidates will receive their tuition fees and a generous yearly stipend. We also welcome applications from people already working in the industry whose companies wish to engage with the CDE''s work. There are restrictions on EPSRC funding for non Home/EU students and we ask that you contact us to discuss your situation.

The Engineering Doctorate in Digital Media (EngD) is the most appropriate route for technical research while the Professional Practice in Digital Media (DProf) allows a suitable pathway for research more explicitly focussed in creative or managerial areas.

Designed in collaboration with industry, the programme provides those wanting to develop or refine their strategic and digital skills or transition into the digital and creative industries. You will embark on a transformative journey to finessing your skills to become adaptive, collaborative and creatively driven, empowering you to go beyond conventional thinking and practices to create effective teams and business value.

This programme is offered in a part-time mode, specially designed to meet the time pressures and learning styles of busy professionals and to directly address the talent gaps of their companies.

It comprises 6 taught project-based modules and an advanced work-based project. Each module combines academic and professional perspectives, hands-on exercises, skills acquisition, industry speakers, collaborative teamwork, a major industry brief and individual and group reflection.

Students will be required to attend a foundation week and then will need to be available approximately 2-3 days every other week to study with us for the length of the programme. Our “live” project briefs form the core of each module and are developed in collaboration with our network of industry partners who include Google, IKEA, Nestlé, Unilever, Greenpeace and the BBC as well as agencies including Ogilvy, TBWA, BBH and JWT.
Following successful completion of the taught part of the programme (43 weeks), students progress to a 18 week Industry Research Project. This is your chance to put your learning to work in an independent research or professional context and helps students take the next step in their careers.

Hyper Island will help you design your project and apply it within your workplace. To successfully graduate with a Master's degree, students will present the findings from their project using reports, videos and prototypes as appropriate to their chosen problem to assessors from industry, Teesside University and Hyper Island.

The MA Digital Media Arts award allows students to gain practical experience and knowledge of the ways that a range of contemporary digital media are produced and used, both alone and in combination. Teaching methods

The course is delivered through a mix of seminars, lectures and tutorials by an expert, specialist, teaching team. As a Digital Media Arts student, you will produce a range of practical projects and gain skills in a variety of technologies and systems while at the same time developing your knowledge of current developments and practices across the digital media field. For your master’s degree project, you will specify and then produce a substantial digital media artefact which reflects your own interests and career plans. We particularly encourage experimentation and cross-disciplinary projects including those that seek to redefine the ambitions, functions and social organisations that digital media can support. During the course, some students will participate in selected undergraduate technical classes in addition to their masters study so that they can update or develop specific skills. Professional, theoretical and critical skills are also taught alongside the technical and design content through the use of academic blogs and presentations.

All students on this programme engage in an interdisciplinary project as a part of their MA study, giving them an opportunity to work with students from other disciplines in an experimental and creative way.

Work Placement

There are work related learning opportunities on this course, all students complete a live external brief as part of their coursework.
