Conducting both basic and applied research in several areas, Psychology at Kent is highly regarded as a leading European centre for postgraduate research. Assessment

The programme mainly involves lecture and seminar based teaching. In addition, particular option units (such as computational modelling) require 'hands-on' experience and learning of particular skills. Staff contact time is eight hours per week. You are expected to study for 1,800 hours over 45 weeks.

Assessment is mainly by coursework assignment (4-6,000 word essays), examination (for the Advanced Statistics and Methodology module only), plus the dissertation.

Research themes

The School of Psychology is highly regarded as a leading European centre for postgraduate research, with an international reputation for excellence in social psychology (including group processes and intergroup relations); cognition and neuroscience; developmental psychology; and forensic psychology. We have staff who can supervise research degrees in all of these areas. How do children learn to reason in increasingly abstract ways? How do they learn language with such remarkable speed and fluidity? How do children use their reasoning and language skills to help them explain and understand people’s behaviour and emotions? Why does the amount of information that we can hold in mind at once increase from early childhood to adulthood? Why does children’s ability to control their own thinking, attention and behaviour improve as they get older? How does the development of children’s brains affect their behaviour, memory and ability to learn?

In this taught programme on Developmental Cognitive Science, you will learn how questions like these can be addressed using research techniques from several inter-related disciplines (e.g., Developmental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Computational Science, Neuroscience, Linguistics).

This programme aims to enhance your understanding of key theoretical and practical issues about typical and atypical development in children and young people, from a cognitive science perspective. It also aims to equip you with the skills required to conduct independent scientific research that addresses key issues in developmental cognitive science.

The University of Edinburgh has a long tradition of research expertise in developmental psychology and in cognitive science. This programme brings these two strands together focusing on a developmental cognitive science approach to both typical and atypical development in children and young people.

What is special about this course?

Are you interested in the science of human behaviour and thought? Are you thinking about a career change or interested in how psychology might contribute to your existing career or interest? If so, this MSc Psychology Conversion* is ideal.

This intense, online course will provide you with a broad and critical awareness of psychological theory and practice. Throughout the course you will develop an understanding of what drives people's behaviour, why we are unique and in what ways we are the same, and explore the theories which explain human behaviour and how they are relevant in today's society.

You will examine the core fields of psychology including biological, individual differences, cognitive, and social and developmental psychology, as set out by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Alongside acquiring the key concepts and core knowledge of psychology, you will build strong project management, analytical and report writing skills. Your learning experience will culminate in a substantial research project/dissertation, for which you will have support from your supervisor.

Application for accreditation by the BPS has been submitted*. This is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

Two face-to-face, long-weekend residentials are held in Inverness in August/September and March/April. You must attend these to be eligible for BPS registration on graduation.

This programme combines psychological theory, research, and application to the study of cognitive functioning, its typical development through childhood and ageing, and its deficits as encountered in a range of disordered populations.

We draw on theory and methodologies derived from multiple perspectives including cognitive, clinical, health, educational, biological, and social psychology, along with neuropsychology, neuroscience, and gerontology. In all cases, approaches are informed by research methodologies that provide an evidence base for their implementation. Using this broad approach, the programme aims to improve understanding of cognitive development and its disorders, and to demonstrate how this informs development of new techniques for improving assessment of cognitive functioning, diagnosis of deficits, and delivery of support, intervention, and training in education, gerontology and clinical contexts. Furthermore, reflecting the research-led focus of this programme, advanced-level training in research methods will be provided in dedicated modules and embedded within subject-specific modules.

This rich programme draws on many levels of analysis, aspects of psychological theory, research, practice and policy. You will be taught and supervised by subject experts, who actively research and publish in their area, and work with the NHS, industry, charities and other organisations to improve educational, developmental, clinical, and health outcomes.

The School of Psychology is a large and thriving department which has expanded rapidly over the last five years. There are now over 70 members of academic, research and support staff, including nine professors. This award aims to:
-To produce clinicians who have a sound critical knowledge of the theoretical and research literature relating to CBT and who are able to competently undertake CBT assessments and interventions with adults with common mental health difficulties such as anxiety and depression according to relevant professional ethical frameworks.
-To contribute towards the requirements of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies for accreditation as a cognitive behavioural therapist.
-Teaching and supervision sessions take place at the Centre of Excellence in Healthcare Education Stafford and in the Learning Centre of St George’s Hospital in Stafford.

Other admission requirements

Have access to a BABCP accredited workplace supervisor who can offer regular supervision. Meet the Staffordshire University required level of proficiency in English (Level 6).

All potential trainees will be interviewed and required to undertake a written assessment before being admitted to the award. Potential trainees will need to demonstrate that they have the necessary interpersonal and academic abilities to achieve the award.

The Department of Philosophy has outstanding research strength in the fields of philosophy of biology, philosophy of psychology and philosophy of cognitive sciences.

We are ranked by the Philosophical Gourmet Report as the strongest department in the UK for the philosophy of biology. The department is also home to a European Research Council project on Darwinism and the Theory of Rational Choice, which explores connections between biological and cognitive science research.

This MA builds on these outstanding research strengths. It is intended for graduates of philosophy, psychology and biology who wish to study philosophy of science with an emphasis on the biological and cognitive sciences. The programme focuses on philosophical issues arising from these scientific disciplines. The history of science is studied in terms of the philosophical debate about the nature of scientific method and knowledge.

You will be an active member of the department's flourishing research culture. All students are encouraged to participate in both the weekly departmental research seminar and in the weekly Philosophy and History of Science research seminar, which often features well-known scholars in the field, from Bristol and beyond. The department has strong links with both the School of Experimental Psychology and the School of Biological Sciences, with whom joint workshops and reading groups are organised.
