There are six pathway options open to you as part of this programme, and your choice might depend on where you see your Masters programme fitting into your career. The modules you select will vary depending on the pathway chosen (see details below).
For the PgCert, you will need to study Critically Exploring Professional Practice and one further optional module and for the PgDip you will need to study Critically Exploring Professional Practice and three further optional modules.

MSC NURSING: INTERNATIONAL
A new and innovative award that is open to both international and UK nurses, who will study together the global context of nursing. The pathway includes an opportunity for international students to undertake some bespoke observational placements in the UK healthcare system, supported by application of skills in a state-of-the-art high-fidelity clinical simulation suite.
MSC NURSING: EDUCATION
This pathway is led and taught by experts in the field. This award allows you to concentrate on teaching and learning in both clinical practice and academic contexts. You will work alongside expert teachers who will support you to develop as a teacher with a thorough understanding of a range of learning and teaching strategies.This option may particularly suit those in new clinical teaching roles, or those seeking a future academic teaching career.
MSC NURSING: RESEARCH
Using the evidence-base to improve patient care lies at the heart of this pathway. You will gain advanced knowledge and skills in all aspects of research and have access to international expertise from our research groups.
MSC NURSING: PRACTICE
This pathway is open to nurses practicing in the UK only. It allows you to build on your current skills, plan, implement and evaluate patient care at an advanced level within the context of your own workplace. There is an emphasis on combining practical skills with sound theoretical principles.
MSC NURSING: PRACTICE (NEUROSCIENCE)
This new pathway aims to equip the qualified nurse with the skills and knowledge to create and implement innovative approaches to neuroscience care delivery.
You can choose to focus on the general award in order to keep your career options open. The MSc Nursing will empower you to develop a mastery of your practice and take forward person centred care. You will have an opportunity to critically examine your practice and services and develop an evidence based approach to improve patient care.
A range of teaching strategies are used, including seminars, lectures, action learning, online learning, directed study, practice based assessments and peer supported learning. The MSc Nursing is underpinned by a student centred teaching and learning philosophy.
Part-time students usually study one module per semester; full-time students will undertake two modules per semester. All students must complete 120 level 7 credits before progressing on to the dissertation.
For the two year part-time option, students will study over Semester 3 whereas for the three year option, you will study over Semesters 1 and 2.

This Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice provides an academic underpinning that meets the contemporary challenges of advanced clinical practice.

The MSc Advanced Clinical Practice has been designed to meet the needs of the health professional whose desire is to develop their clinical career to a higher level as an advanced practitioner. The course philosophy is to acknowledge your prior experience and knowledge as a health professional and subsequently enable you to fulfil your potential as a postgraduate through the development of new understanding, critical insight and advanced level academic and clinical skills. This course is open to practitioners registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), or General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
This programme will develop the health professional’s knowledge and skills to work at an advanced level of clinical practice. The programme has been designed around the current Health Education England West Midlands (HEEWM) competency framework (2015). The Advanced Clinical Practice Framework for the West Midlands is multidisciplinary and applies to all non-medical healthcare professionals including nurses, midwives, pharmacists and allied health professionals.
It is expected that on completion of this course you will be a recognised Advanced Clinical Practitioner (HEWM, 2015) with an expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies for expanded autonomous scope of practice, the characteristics of which are shaped by the context in which the individual practices.
You will normally have an honours degree and have been working in clinical practice for a minimum of 3 years and have evidence of studying at level 6 prior to commencing the course.
The course has been developed in response to identified and anticipated demands for increasing the number of health professionals with advanced clinical skills and critical understanding. For the award of Postgraduate Diploma you will study six 20 credit modules. This can be followed by one 60 credit Independent Project module to achieve the award MSc Advanced Clinical Practice.

This programme is designed for experienced practitioners who wish to advance their clinical practice, develop their professional career and enhance their knowledge of research and evidence-based healthcare in community nursing. This pathway aims to bring an advanced nurse practitioner level of practice to district nursing to meet, and to encourage, evolving service delivery models with a strong emphasis on clinical leadership.
Components of leadership relevant to advanced practice in district nursing include the use of robust evaluation methodology so that practice is prescribed, delivered and audited, based on understanding of the search for, and use of, valid data. Leadership within district nursing also require the skills to manage and develop staff, and to work effectively with other agencies. The programme, mapped against the RCN competences for advanced nursing practice also provides practitioners with the opportunity to qualify as independent prescribers.

Our course teams have worked closely with employers and key stakeholders to develop a framework of core knowledge and skills and ensure a nationally consistent approach to specialist clinical nursing in the specified field. The need to put the patient at the forefront of all decision making is essential and the specialist nurse is in a uniquely privileged position to ensure that this is done.
This course, as well as preparing for and developing your specialist clinical nursing role and practice, can also be the first step to further academic qualifications. Further study is available to progress in your studies at level 7 and achieve a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing and ultimately an MSc Nursing.

This programme is studied full-time over two academic years; over this period students must gain 2,300 hours of theory and 2,300 hours of practice for NMC registration. The programme is divided into modules.

Individuals who have an undergraduate or higher degree in a relevant subject, normally obtained within the last five years, and experience of working in a health care environment.
Applicants are required to demonstrate that they have worked for a minimum of 575 hours within a paid healthcare role, gained within a year of commencing the programme. This is equivalent to 16 weeks of full-time work and may be achieved through part time-work over a longer period of time.
Applicants also need to be ambitious and passionate about a career in nursing, with the ability and drive to complete the programme in two years.

Nursing with registration is an innovative two-year programme, which enables graduates from other disciplines to gain professional registration in Adult, Children's or Mental Health nursing through postgraduate study. This course will permit you to develop your nursing skills and build your knowledge of professional and ethical practice.
This postgraduate nursing programme is designed for graduates from other disciplines who wish to gain professional registration in Adult, Children's or Mental Health Nursing. The programme runs over two years.
The programme focuses on quality care, cutting edge clinical skills and is designed to be both research intensive and research informed. You will learn the pivotal roles of nurse and client, while developing your nursing skills and building your knowledge of professional and ethical practice. This innovative programme ensures our students meet the registration requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Subjects such as nursing bioscience, professional practice, research, evidence-based practice, policy and clinical leadership, as well as adult, children's or mental health nursing are studied. The programme is divided between theoretical modules and clinical practice, with blocks of time spent in clinical placement.

All students on nursing programmes are required to undertake an enhanced DBS check and all must give consent to this. Completed DBS checks must be received prior to the student undertaking any clinical placement. All students attend Occupational Health (OH) on entry the programme. All applicants are required to make an APEL claim. Pre-registration nursing programmes should normally be no less than three years. However, the use of APEL permits us to offer a programme of two years duration to those applicants who can show evidence of prior learning relevant to the programme.
