Our MSc Paediatric Dentistry course will equip you with the advanced academic knowledge and clinical skills required to practice as a specialist in paediatric dentistry.
This is a full-time, three-year master's degree that combines the taught and research elements of the MSc with a mandatory clinical training unit.

Clinical teaching involves close supervision of a personal cohort of patients with a broad range of paediatric dental needs, including those with dental anomalies, trauma and caries, under supervision by hospital specialists and consultants. Clinical training involves attendance at consultant new patient clinics.
Completing this course will prepare you to practice as a specialist paediatric dentist or pursue a clinical academic or research career in this field. You will be eligible to sit the Membership in Paediatric Dentistry tri-collegiate specialty membership examination upon completion of the course.

Formal assessment for the Research Methods, Biostatistics, and Guideline Development and Implementation units will be undertaken via marked written assignments.
The CPD unit will be assessed via a combination of written and practical examinations.
For the clinical skills component, assessment is through examination of a variety of skills procedures carried out in the skills facility.
For the clinical component, case write-up and presentation, assessment is through marking of both the written component oral presentation of cases and clinical governance projects.
This course will have the majority of its clinical activity in the Paediatric Dental department in the University Dental Hospital of Manchester, with general anaesthesia lists running in the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Trafford General Hospital. Clinical teaching will be delivered by consultants and specialists in paediatric dentistry.
The dissertation is marked in line with all of our dentistry MSc dissertations.

Paediatric dentistry is a stimulating and rewarding speciality, and offers a number of career opportunities. Paediatric dentists may work in private practice, the community dental setting and in dental hospitals.
In addition to this clinical role, many paediatric dentists participate in teaching and research. These interests can be combined with part-time clinical work or undertaken on a full-time basis.
In the UK, consultants in paediatric dentistry may work in a community or hospital setting and concentrate on the management of complex, multidisciplinary cases. They also play an important role in the management of the unit in which they work.
The postgraduate diploma in Operative Dentistry is designed to enhance the operative skills of newly-qualified dentists, as well as experienced practitioners wishing to upskill, whilst they continue to work in general dental practice. Course participants will develop the technical, diagnostic and treatment planning skills necessary to practice modern clinical operative dentistry effectively and efficiently.
Topics covered include restorative treatment planning, anterior and posterior composite restorations, a variety of different crown preparation techniques, resin bonded bridges, occlusion, management of tooth surface loss, clinical photography, dento-legal issues, endodontics and restoration of the non-vital tooth, implant maintenance, bleaching, removable prosthodontics provision and a variety of other operative dentistry related topics.
This two year part-time postgraduate diploma in Operative Dentistry combines seminars, hands-on training and direct clinical contact with patients, alongside self-guided learning. Course participants will study the applied science of operative dentistry and acquire clinical and practical skills in operative dentistry. This training will be delivered at King’s College Dental Hospital, Denmark Hill (attending between 22 and 26 days per year).
It is specifically designed for dentists already working in dental practice using patients from both their practice and the hospital to develop a reflective log of treatment which will form a major part of their course assessment.

The DClinDent in Paediatric Dentistry is a three-year, full-time programmes which allows the pursuit of specialist training, attainment of a Taught Professional Doctorate in Paediatric Dentistry and preparation for the Tri-Collegiate Specialty Membership Examination in Paediatric Dentistry administered by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
The DClinDent aims to provide doctoral level educational opportunities to enable students to develop, consolidate and enhance their range of academic and clinical competencies to enable independent and reflective practice at the standard of a specialist in Paediatric Dentistry.
The programme commences with an initial module of four to six weeks based in the clinical skills laboratory to allow the postgraduate to become familiar with the rationale and clinical techniques used in the Department of Paediatric Dentistry at the Edinburgh Dental Institute. During the initial months, there is an introduction to the dental literature and to research methodology. The remainder of the programme follows a consistent pattern where six sessions each week are spent in the clinical care of patients. The remaining four sessions each week are dedicated to the academic and research programmes as well as personal study.
As available in Years 1 or Year 2:
The clinical component is taught mainly on clinic where students undertake supervised management of patients. In the first two years, the academic content of the programme will be delivered in the form of lectures and seminars with critical appraisal and discussion of the relevant literature. In the final year, the taught component of the course will be restricted to minimal use of lecture/seminar-format for the Systematic Review and Clinical Governance Project.
For Year 1 and Year 2 students, there will be a written assessment at the end of each term. In addition, Year 2 students will also be assessed on four unseen cases and on presentation of three personally-treated cases. Year 2 students will also submit a dissertation which they will defend during a viva-voce examination.
Successful completion of the first two years of the programme will allow students to proceed to Year 3 of the programme. In Year 3, students will be assessed on a clinical governance project, a systematic review of a topic related to Paediatric Dentistry, two fully documented patient case presentations and two unseen cases.

The programme is aimed at qualified dental practitioners who wish to further enhance their evidence-based knowledge and skills in Paediatric Dentistry to attain a Professional Doctorate and also at individuals preparing for the Tri-Collegiate Specialty Membership Examination in Paediatric Dentistry.
The latter facilitates access to the United Kingdom General Dental Council Specialist Register in Paediatric Dentistry, allowing an individual to practice as a specialist and with further training, appointment as a substantive/honorary NHS Consultant.
Likewise, for overseas students attainment of both a Professional Doctorate and a College Speciality Membership normally allows appointment within their own country at the Specialist/Consultant level.
Our course will suit practitioners with little or no implant dentistry experience. You will develop the skills to plan, treat and maintain implant cases. We provide the patients you treat on the course. The course satisfies the requirements of UK Training Standards in Implant Dentistry.

The course satisfies the requirements of the Training Standards in Implant Dentistry. This is endorsed by the General Dental Council (UK) at the level of 'straightforward placement of implants'. It also provides good preparation for dentists planning to sit the Diploma in Implant Dentistry, offered by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
The course is part time over 18 months (approximately one full day per fortnight contact time) commencing in either January or July. We deliver the course through a combination of:
-Skills training workshops using plastic, animal and human cadaver materials
-One-to-one teaching whilst treating patients
We select patients for planning, surgery and restoration of dental implants. As far as possible, you will see the same patients through their whole course of treatment.
We encourage that a dental nurse from your team accompanies you at skills training workshops and on teaching clinics. Nurses receive broad instruction in surgical and restorative implant procedures. They will also become familiar with implant product handling.
We run the course in partnership with Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The vast majority of the course takes place at the School of Dental Sciences and Dental Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.
We provide professional development in an area not taught in detail at undergraduate level. We have had students start this course with no previous experience of implant dentistry. They have then progressed to carry out implant surgery and restoration in their own dental practices.
The course director is Mr Francis Nohl, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. He is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer and Specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics. Francis has over 20 years of experience of the surgical and prosthodontic aspects of implant dentistry.

Our Paediatric Dentistry MSc offers you teaching in all aspects of paediatric dentistry, including a hands-on laboratory module in operative dentistry for children. Our course includes diagnosis, treatment planning and delivery of care requiring non-pharmacological behaviour management strategies and for those requiring oral rehabilitation under sedation or general anaesthesia.
The programme aims to produce paediatric dentists who are thinkers. This is a modern course that aims to facilitate reflective learning, clinical judgements, critical analysis, evidence based practice and excellent, empathetic clinical care. The didactic course is predominantly seminar based. A tutor will facilitate the seminars but these will be student led. This means that the students will be expected to present the topic and to critically appraise the literature in the subject area, and present this both in writing and verbally. This approach supports the development of inquisitive thinking, deep learning and helps develop judgement.
There will be a programme of lectures in selected topics.
Year 1 students will benefit from a programme of ‘core’ lectures and seminars where they will join postgraduate students from other disciplines.
Year 2 students will have a lecture programme focused on the management of medically compromised children and the clinical aspects of dental anomalies.
Students will have an average of six clinical sessions each week throughout the two year programme. Three or four of these will be for personal patient treatment. The other sessions will include trauma clinics/A&E/multidisciplinary clinics, operative treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia,and weekly consultant clinics.
Students are expected to undertake a research project. This can be laboratory or clinically based. The Dissertation accounts for 33.3% of the course, it is hoped that the projects will be presented at national and international conferences and be suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Our aim is to develop you to the forefront of Paediatric Dentistry, as clinicians, teachers and future leaders. The clinical activity is predominantly based at St Thomas’ Hospital, Waterloo, with seminars and clinics at Guy’s Hospital, London Bridge and at King’s College Hospital, located in Denmark Hill.

As we are seeking to identify your suitability for this clinical environment, we expect our interviewees to adopt the dress code required of clinical dental students at King's. Entry to the programme is strictly dependent upon occupational health clearance that you are able to conduct exposure prone procedures (EPPs) before you start clinical work. This will assess your hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis C antibody status, HIV and TB status following the completion of a health questionnaire and a further health check before or at enrolment.
If offered a place on the course, overseas students are advised to be tested locally and send the results of these checks with the questionnaire, prior to a separate full test in the UK at the College's Occupational Health Department before term begins. A full-time, one-year (or for specialist registrars (StRs), a part-time, two-year) Master's programme that provides advanced knowledge in various areas of conservative dentistry.
The programme provides theoretical and practical experience in the conservative restoration of cases ranging from a single missing tooth to full mouth rehabilitation, utilising either tooth or implant-supported restorations.

This flexible, three-year Master's programme blends online, distance learning with hands-on simulated clinical training and aims to support students' ongoing clinical work at the same time as developing their abilities.
Year one provides students with the basic knowledge required in paediatric dentistry and teaches some of the clinical techniques needed in a laboratory setting. Year two encourages more advanced and complex treatment planning and looks at other aspects of good patient care such as clinical governance. Year three consolidates the learning to date and provides the theoretical experience required for graduates to understand, critically appraise and potentially carry out research.

Note on mode of study: Selecting the part-time mode allows you access to study loans, but students must complete their studies in consecutive years and may not take any time away from study without authorised Extenuating Circumstances. Those selecting the flexible mode of study cannot access loans. They are able to take a break from the end of a year of study but must complete the programme within five years.
It is not possible to transfer between modes of study so students need to select the option that suits their personal circumstances. Students will be taught together irrespective of their mode of study.

The first cohort of students on the Paediatric Dentistry MSc graduated in 2017, therefore no information on graduate destinations is currently available.

The Master of Science in Paediatric Dentistry is for dental graduates wanting to pursue a career in paediatric dentistry in a primary or secondary care setting or in academia.
Paediatric dentistry encompasses many aspects of general dentistry and specialist skills in the care of infants, children and adolescents. The broad nature of the work requires a combination of medical, dental and communications skills.
As part of the clinical training, you will be treating patients in consultant, trauma and sedation clinics. You’ll treat a wide range of medically compromised children, which may require you to liaise with paediatric specialists and anaesthetists prior to treatment under general anaesthesia.

Clinical Audit Project (10 credits)
Discuss how you can improve clinical practice to make a positive difference to your patients. The project includes how to plan an audit, collect different types of data and how to compile, analyse and interpret data and implement change.
Multidisciplinary Management of the Complex Case (20 credits)
This module addresses multi-disciplinary issues such as diagnosis and management of atypical facial pain and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD).
Dealing with Complexity and Challenge (50 credits)
This module develops more complex skills in challenging situations in a supported environment.
Teaching will take place in small groups as a series of modules covering case based learning platforms and enhanced clinical education at the Leeds Dental Institute.
