Within the UK, child health and social care has received considerable support under the government's modernising agenda leading to an increase in childcare provision, employment opportunities and a growing evidence and academic knowledge base. The School of Social Work has been active in developments in child care practice and research and has developed a strong child care research group which has contributed to our success in establishing a research profile of national and international significance. The school is home to the Centre for Childhood and Youth research [‘TheCentre’] led by Professors Nigel Thomas and Andy Bilson and is an active member of the Making Research Count Network.

The course takes a research-applied approach to examining contemporary practice and service provision and also offers opportunities to engage in research and theoretical work. It is made up of three parts:

Core childcare modules which critically examine conventional developmental approaches and more recent research on contemporary childhoods; contemporary national and international research, policy and practice concerning children's safety and protection; the ways in which relevant legislation and guidance including the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child [UNCRC]; Children Acts, 1989 and 2004, Every Child Matters and the Human Rights Act are currently being applied in the UK and the part law plays in constructing appropriate roles for children.

Further core modules provide for knowledge and skills development in Research Methods, and the critical exploration of the contemporary contexts of service developments in children's services.

About the programme

This Graduate Diploma will give you the skills and knowledge to deliver quality services to children and their parents in an early years setting. Your studies will include learning within childhood; leadership and management; and reflective practice and research.

Learning approaches are based on extending your knowledge to support and enhance practice through analysis of critical incidents using problem-based learning. Learning and assessment is embedded in work-related practice and builds upon your prior learning and existing knowledge to meet the regulatory requirements for lead practitioner employment. You must be employed in, or have access to, an acceptable professional environment in which knowledge and understanding of childhood practice in Scotland has been developed.

Practical experience

Work-based learning forms part of the assessment so employment for more than 16 hours per week is necessary. You must also have employer support and a mentor from your area of practice to support your studies. You will be assigned a personal tutor and online tutoring support is available. You will also use Personal Development Planning to track your progress, plan your future development and enhance your future employability.

The course consists of six modules at SCQF Level 9. Delivered by representatives of the University of Stirling, the NSPCC and a range of experts from across Scotland, this fully accredited programme has been introduced to enable students to develop advanced skills in child welfare and protection practice with children and families.

Unlike most other postgraduate courses in the field, this course has an emphasis on gaining practical skills and experience. In particular the course is designed to bridge an existing gap in practice skills development, and students will gain knowledge, skills and experience for working within the most challenging settings.

The syllabus will provide access to the latest insights, from experts in fieldwork and clinical practice across a range of settings, which inform contemporary practice in Scotland.

It will include a variety of innovative learning and assessment methods including videotaped role-play, extended case study work, peer review. This is a post-qualifying course for staff working in child welfare and protection, including those in social work, health, education, the police and associated disciplines. With a focus on improving outcomes for children, this course tackles core challenges in practice including assessment, planning and effective practice. The course builds professional knowledge and competence sequentially through consideration of key frameworks (such as attachment theory and resilience), critical reflection on multi-professional judgement and decision-making, through to examination of the latest research and practice developments in care planning and intervention.

The Certificate consists of three 20 credit modules (Scottish Qualifications and Credit Framework) which are designed to be taken sequentially across one year of study. Each module is delivered over seven days through a blend of direct teaching and structured learning activities. Modules are structured to accommodate the pressures experienced by professionals combining adult learning with demanding workloads. Unique to this course, there is a final day in the timetable which provides students with the tools and opportunity to review their learning across the course. This review of learning is designed to facilitate embedding of learning in practice and to dovetail the learning outcomes from the course with the student’s ongoing professional development.

This course will enable child and family social workers to develop a high degree of competence and professional expertise by engaging with current knowledge and developing a high level of skills for intervention.

The course is aimed at registered social workers practicing in the area of Children and Families service provision. Assessment

Throughout the course you will encounter a wide range of assessments designed to collectively meet a variety of individual learning styles and to support you in your progress towards becoming an autonomous learner.

This is an intensive interdisciplinary programme, designed to explore issues such as child law and how it is implemented through policy and practice, and the implications of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child for child welfare, disability, education, family studies, juvenile justice, social policy and social work.

This programme responds to the increasing importance of the study of childhood in disciplines as widespread as philosophy, sociology and geography. It offers an opportunity to develop skills in research and consultation with children and young people.

You’ll examine the implications of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and gain knowledge and analytical perspectives on particular areas of legislation, policy, theory and practice that affect children. The programme benefits from the childhood studies expertise of academic staff across the University.

Programme structure

Teaching combines lectures, seminars and tutorials, plus a combination of essays and assessed coursework. You will complete three compulsory courses and three option courses followed by an independently researched dissertation.

Safeguarding children is a high profile area of work, where decision making carries a high order of risk for children, their families and those engaged with them. There is a pressing demand for professionals and others across a wide range of disciplines and sectors to develop an in-depth knowledge of child protection work and to demonstrate effective, evidence based skills. The Postgraduate Certificate in Safeguarding Children was developed to offer opportunities for continuing personal and professional development through the development of in-depth knowledge to support practitioners and others whose work or research interests lay within the wide range of services for children, young people, their parents or carers. The multi-disciplinary backgrounds and experiences of candidates are an important value added element of the course, mirroring as it does the multi-agency working which underpins all contemporary children’s services and is required by legislation and guidance.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

Sessions are scheduled on Wednesdays and typically run 3 -5pm, to accommodate candidates who are combining professional careers with CPD. Each of the three modules will consist of around 12 class sessions. These include a mix of tutor delivered input; interactive discussions; candidate lead seminars; problem solving activities and directed reading.

Assessment is by coursework and varied: methods include seminar presentations, the preparation of a training pack, a poster presentation, essays, critiques.

Underpinned by a theoretical framework of children's rights, this multi-disciplinary programme is designed to encourage students to take a rigorous academic and analytical approach to contemporary issues in childhood which are of relevance to those working or intending to work with or on behalf of vulnerable children.

The curriculum is subject to change to keep up with policy developments.

- Course purpose -

Designed for professional and personal development, as well as academic. We aim to enable you to develop a multidisciplinary approach to childhood issues within the context of current policy developments. Students come from a variety of disciplines and professions including medicine, education, law, social care, psychology and sociology.

- Course format and assessment -

Full-time students take all 180 credits in one academic year. Part-time students normally take all four taught modules in year 1, and research methods training and the dissertation in year 2. However, there is some flexibility, and you may choose to take three taught modules in year 1 and your remaining modules in year 2 if you prefer.

Career prospects

Our graduates frequently progress to senior practitioner posts involving child-related work. Many students have found that the multidisciplinary aspect of the programme has opened up unexpected or unique opportunities, including research or policy positions with some of the larger children's charities. Recent graduate destinations include Anna Freud Centre, Barnardo's, St Christopher's residential child care services and local authority children's services.

Teaching and learning

The teaching and learning methods used on the programme are designed to promote constructive and critical reflection on practice and a range of theoretical and research issues.

Approach to assessment

Each module has an assignment of approximately 4,000 words.

An example of an indicative assessment is a report on an observational study of children working on a particular activity / experience, focusing on a selected child-development theme.

You’ll be exposed to new and original ways of thinking about children and young people. You’ll be able to:
-Communicate effectively with child- and youth-focused professionals
-Carry out empirical research with children and young people
-Transfer your analytical, writing and other skills to the workplace

How will I study?

You study core modules and options. You also undertake a research methods module and a research dissertation or work-based project.

You are assessed through essays and case studies of 1,500–3,000 words, and group presentations. As part of the dissertation component of the course, you produce a dissertation proposal and a dissertation of 15,000 words.

Work placement

We have strong links with a number of local organisations through which we offer work placements as part of this course. Many of our graduates find employment in non-profit organisations, schools, and social-research settings.

This programme provides training for individuals in outcomes-based CBT interventions to promote psychological wellbeing in children and young people. This Master's programme is aimed at professionals already working in the field of children's services, including social care, education and health, who hope to gain skills they can practise in the workplace.

Degree information

The programme will develop participants’ knowledge and skills in cognitive behavioural based interventions with children and young people experiencing a range of difficulties in social and emotional aspects of their development. Participants will also develop skills in evaluating the impact of their own work, in order to be able to reflect on and modify practice in future.

All candidates should initially enrol for the Postgraduate Certificate (modules 1-4, 60 credits).

On completion they should make a decision to terminate their studies at that point or enrol to take further modules for the Diploma (modules 5–8, 60 credits) and MSc (dissertation module, 60 credits). There are no optional modules for this programme.

CBT for children and young people is one of a number of evidence-based interventions for common childhood problems and disorders. The demand for professionals with skills in this area in known to be high and is likely to grow. Several of our students have been funded by employers who want to increase their supervisory capacity in CBT and this is likely to be a trend that will continue.
