In a world where managing and leading change has become critical, the Change Management Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) will set you apart from colleagues with standard management qualifications.

Developing you as an accredited practitioner, this course will build your personal capacity to:

  • understand the academic theory behind organisational change
  • confidently take on a change leadership role
  • integrate academic knowledge and practice skills to engage in authoritative change management
  • make sense of the opportunities presented by cultural change.

This course is designed to fit around your personal and professional commitments. It is taught in three teaching blocks and you can choose to spread the course over a few years or complete it quickly in less than one year. Courses start in September, January and April.

Each three-day block is assessed by a work-based project which will contribute to your employer's business. This project will ensure that you are using best practice in your work.

All of the classroom teaching is workshop-based which promotes group discussion and the sharing of experience.

Course structure

This course is delivered in three teaching blocks. Each block is taught over three consecutive days and is assessed by a work-based project.

Projects will not only ensure you are putting your skills to use, but are also designed to benefit your employer.

You will choose three of four available modules.

Classroom teaching is workshop-based to promote group discussion and the sharing of experience.

Syllabus

On the Change Management course, you will study the three modules that interest you the most.

Managing the Human Aspects of Change

Organisational cultures, which are a reflection of the attitudes, values and beliefs of members, can either aid or impede change. On this module, you will gain practical skills and tools both to analyse these cultures and influence cultural change. The module encourages engagement with the often neglected human aspects of managing change.

Political and Institutional Perspectives on Change Management

This module is recommended for managers aiming to interpret and make sense of change initiatives coming from higher levels within the organisation. It focuses on the potentially large and unpredictable effects that political and economic events may have

The module presents multiple opportunities to explore complex cause and effect relationships systematically and creatively. It helps managers make appropriate judgements in the absence of complete data and to reach meaningful conclusions as to the likely impact of global changes on their organisation.

The Leadership of Change

This module is recommended for managers either involved in or anticipating leading change initiatives at all levels within organisations.

We now understand how successful change initiatives require a combination of effective leadership and effective management. The module will introduce you to leading change theories, models and concepts which inform these contemporary debates. It addresses how leaders communicate change, how they respond to and rethink resistance to change and how power and politics always informs leadership activities.

By the end of the module you will appreciate the challenges of leading change and the potential positive difference that the effective leadership of change can make.

Systems and Complexity Approaches to Change Management

This module is recommended for managers grappling with the unpredictable and repercussive effects of managing change under challenging circumstances.

Change initiatives are often couched in project methodology terms, yet controlled project outcomes may remain elusive. The module examines action, effect, feedback and impact on initial conditions from a systems perspective. This contributes to an understanding of how and why localised change management projects may often diverge from planned expectations. The module explores the explanatory capabilities of such academic approaches and their potential value to practitioners.

Careers and employability

On completion of this course you will have a sound understanding of change management, with knowledge and skills widely sought after by private, public and not-for-profit organisations.

Graduates of the course receive free membership to the Institute of Change Management.

Course details

Business today is global and no company can be confident of surviving unless it appreciates this fact and understands its implications.

Multinational corporations are very short of managers from countries other than their domestic base, who have the understanding to operate comfortably in different countries.

Small and medium-sized firms with strong niche positions are also increasingly looking for talented and well-trained staff to help them undertake international expansion. In major emerging economies such as Brazil, China and India, successful domestic firms are poised to become multinational through expanding overseas. They too welcome graduates with the appropriate knowledge about doing business internationally.

For non business graduates please also see our MSc International Business programme.

MBA (International)

MBA (Asset Management)

An MBA qualification continues to be the flagship qualification for post-graduate business students seeking to increase subject knowledge, build a portfolio of management skills and enhance future career prospects in a competitive and increasingly global arena.

The MBA suite consists of three routes (see above) all of which encompass three core topics, which provide the foundation for a successful business, namely strategy, finance and leadership.

In addition there are optional routes which provide opportunities to select from and include transnational business practice to reflect global growth and development and environmental concerns which has increasing prominence in corporate reporting and business procedures.

Other options include the relatively new subject of Asset Management which covers asset life cycle management and is a key function in planning and maintenance of a flourishing business. Risk is a vital concern when evaluating and making business decisions and is a further option. Finally the creative change and innovation option utilises a broad range of approaches which are used for business continuity, growth and relevance to the market place.

Key Course Features

  • It’s your time to focus on career development skills and knowledge in a supportive environment.
  • MBA modules are aligned to the Institute of Directors Competency Framework which encompasses a range of skills, knowledge and mind-sets.
  • The Asset Management module is aligned to the Institute of Asset Management qualification framework.
  • Access to a network of aspiring business managers drawn from various sectors and organizations.

  • The research element of the programme enables students to identify, investigate, analyse and propose sound solutions in relation to a business problem.
  • Teaching is interactive and, where possible, based on contemporary business issues throughout the programme.

What Will You Study?

The programme is delivered through a series of six taught subject specific modules over two trimesters. Students also study research methods and submit a research proposal at the end of trimester two. During the third semester students complete a dissertation which involves a research element and attendance for a series of supervision meetings.

The programme delivery is timetabled over two days per week which provides flexibility for students who are working, however it is classed as a full-time programme.

The programme is delivered over a one year period. Students will typically be expected to attend a three-hour block per week devoted to each module. This will consist of a lecture and a tutorial to enable skills development and application. Each module has two assessments which students will required to complete in order to progress on the programme.

CORE AND OPTIONAL MODULES

  • Implementing Strategies (Core)
  • Integrated Communications (Core)
  • Contemporary Leadership Themes (Core)
  • Financial Insights, Business Intelligence (Core)
  • Creative Change and Innovation (Core)
  • Emphasising the Environment (Optional)
  • Evaluating Risk and Decisions (Optional)
  • Research Methods and Dissertation (Core)

Assessment and Teaching

The taught modules will be assessed predominantly through individual or group assignments. However, several modules have an examination as part of the assessment procedure. You must pass all of your modules to attain 120 credits and progress to the dissertation stage.

To be awarded the MBA, successful completion of the dissertation is required, and 180 credits attained. You will be required to submit your dissertation in the autumn following assessment in May. Upon progression to the dissertation stage you will be allocated a supervisor to advise on the construction and progression of your dissertation.

Career Prospects

The career direction of MBA students is both diverse and specialised, however roles requiring effective planning and undertaking of projects is strongly evidenced, together with enhanced responsibilities and the management of a team or group where leadership skills and decision making are clearly required. Other roles may be more focused on a specialism such as human resources, marketing, and finance and accounting.

Past students have become Operations Managers, Lean Managers, Project Managers in a range of fields, Human Resource Managers and Marketing Managers. This list is not exhaustive.

The Careers & Zone at Wrexham Glyndwr University is there to help you make decisions and plan the next steps towards a bright future. From finding work or further study to working out your interests, skills and aspirations, they can provide you with the expert information, advice and guidance you need.

The Swansea Business School part-time DBA is an exciting opportunity for experienced managers to further their qualifications, combining research and practical reflective activities.

The DBA offers a relevant and manageable doctorate for managers who may feel the traditional PhD is not relevant to their career needs and ambitions.

The Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a professional doctorate which provides a structured programme of study through taught modules, closely integrated with an individual’s professional career development. It is widely recognised as the pinnacle of qualifications in the world of business and management. This DBA programme is designed to meet the needs of professionals working in Business Administration and Management related areas in the UK and international markets.

The programme is open to candidates who have at least three years recent and relevant management experience. It aims to provide students with both a thorough grounding in the philosophy, principles and practice of business administration and management research, and a critical understanding of key contemporary and global issues affecting all types and sectors of business. The term business is used in its widest sense as this degree may also be undertaken by those who work in social enterprises, voluntary and not-for-profit organisations.

The programme has two parts, and is composed of taught modules and a doctoral-level work-based research project. The element of reflection on professional practice distinguishes the professional doctorate from the award of a PhD.

Key Features

A collaboration between world leading practitioners and top academics

Powerful award-winning online social learning experiences

Live discovery events, held once a semester

A dedicated research centre to support your thesis

Limited places to maximise engagement

Every semester you will spend two to three days discovering things about yourself, complexity and the world around you at live events.

These events are designed to extend theory, concepts, frameworks and practice through the use of spaces that connect you and what you learn to the wider world.

Modules

The award of DBA is made on the successful achievement of 540 credits at Levels 7 and 8.

Part One*:

Candidates will study three compulsory modules of research methods:

Approaches to Research and Academic Communication
Qualitative Research
Quantitative Research Methods
and three compulsory modules from:

Visions for the Future – Theoretical Perspectives on Management
Strategic Change and Organisations
Managing in Complex Environments: Strategies, Insights and Solutions
Entrepreneurial Perspectives
*advanced standing may apply for candidates with extensive research methods training or who have completed a relevant programme of study on the equivalent level.

Part Two:

This element comprises a taught module, Preparing for Doctoral Research and a work-based research project at doctoral level of 60,000 words.

Research is focused on workplace practice, enabling advanced practitioners to undertake a doctoral programme whilst also making a significant contribution to their own professional practice as well as their organisation’s development.
