Tilburg University?

The European Union, with its supranational powers, is interacting directly with the legal systems of its Member States in substantive as well as procedural matters. The EU is also playing an increasing role at the international level, creating obligations for its Member States. These developments are creating exciting opportunities as well as challenges - and a growing demand for professionals with the qualifications to address them.

Enthusiastic, highly-qualified teaching staff

All teachers on the program are highly qualified and enthusiastic academics with additional expertise emanating from their connections to international and European legal practice. Our classes are small-scale and characterized by teacher-student interaction. Well-known professors from other prestigious institutes as well as practitioners, enhance learning by giving guest lectures on specific issues. In addition, we organize regular Career Talks: a practioner that has made his or her career in a relevant field of EU law is invited to talk about his or her career path and work experience.

Small class sizes and interactive teaching methods ensure a high level of participation by students during the program, as well as contact between students and their professors. Group-work develops students' interpersonal skills and team-mentality - essential for any legal career. Competencies are also developed in areas such as analysis, judgment, formulating statements, and presenting professionally. Extra-curricular activities such as study-trips, moot courts, and social events & drinks, further foster the interactive climate.

Latest research and most topical issues

The department of European and International Law and the Tilburg Law and Economic Center (TILEC( is renowned for its international publications, prominent international affiliations, cooperation with leading International Law Schools, and the national and international advisory positions of its core researchers. Good practical training opportunities

TILT has excellent contacts with government and semi-government agencies, companies, and law firms. TILT is frequently approached by these professional bodies about practical training opportunities and internships and, together with students, actively endeavors to find appropriate trainee projects for students. Art, Media and Society is a renewed, fully English-taught Master's specialization within the Master's program Culture Studies.

The Master’s specialization in Art, Media and Society focuses on the transformations that cultural products undergo as a result of digitalization and globalization. In this program you will analyze how digital cultural products and artefacts critically reflect societal issues, such as the financial crisis, the rise of populism or the ‘tyranny of intimacy’ of social media. Furthermore, you will investigate the public impact of activities carried out by a range of different authors and artists. You will use theories and analytical tools to understand what is at stake here. Central questions are: How can art reshape the public sphere? What are new dimensions of information in the current public sphere?

As a student of Art, Media and Society, you take an interdisciplinary approach to media and art in the modern digital and culturally diverse society, and find yourself at the interface between culture, media, aesthetics and politics.

In this Master’s program, you study digital cultural products and artefacts in contemporary society: phenomena of high and mass culture as well as fashion and advertising, narrative forms of expression such as journalism and personal blogging, as well as literature and visual art focusing on varied purposes: to articulate human rights, to challenge neoliberal development, and to forge alternative local and transnational solidarities. You investigate how information circulates in various contexts, what the social, political and ethical implications are of cultural products, and how roles of producing and consuming these products are negotiated.

In addition, you study theories about the way cultural products and artefacts are experienced and responded to. You practice and further develop your ability to communicate your knowledge and to define, formulate, develop and implement projects. The purpose of the Master’s specialization in Art, Media and Society is to educate professionals with clear profiles.

Career Perspective Art, Media and Society

Art, media and society prepares you for a career in today’s global, digital and cultural diverse society. An average of 80 % of our students finds a job within a year after graduating. Our alumni work in the (online) media sector, in education, as programmer of film, theater, festival or debate. Global Communication is a new, fully English-taught Master's specialization within the Master's program Culture Studies.

Modern life is seriously affected by globalization. Between cradle and grave you encounter thousands of situations in which you interact with people who do not share the same background as you. We are more mobile, fewer of us stay in the same place for all or most of our lives and our everyday contacts span many different social groups. In addition, the internet gives us unlimited access to people and information and enables us to communicate without being constrained by time and place. These aspects of globalization have made societies ‘superdiverse’.
Living in a superdiverse world requires a flexible and expansive communicative repertoire. You need to be sensitive to variation in communicative behavior across social groups and across different settings, including offline and online modes of communication.

In the Master’s specialization Global Communication the aim is to understand the communicative challenges of life in times of globalization and superdiversity. This entails knowing about the phenomena to which globalization gives rise, knowing about how people acquire and use the communicative skills one needs to succeed, knowing what roles education and policy making plays in this, and knowing about how all this contact between cultures or sub-cultures affects the people it concerns.

Career perspective Global Communication

Global Communication prepares you for a career in today’s global, digital and cultural diverse society.

More specific, our alumni work as:
•PR coordinator
•Public communications specialist
•(Web)editor
•Communications coordinator

The aim of the Master's program Management of Cultural Diversity at Tilburg University is:
First, to equip students with the necessary expertise, tools and skills to analyze cases of cultural diversity in organizations and societal fields like education, health care, labor market and arts and culture.
Second, based on such an analysis they will be able to design management interventions to neutralize the risks and to take advantage of the opportunities stemming from cultural diversity.

A master's program about the impact of globalization and intercultural communication:
Globalization means movement. People, images, symbols, information, capital, goods and so on increasingly move from one corner of the world to another and people communicate with other people many miles away. As a consequence, individual people are increasingly being confronted with (all kinds of) different influences and ideas from other parts of the world.

About collaboration between people with different cultural backgrounds and world views:
Global communication media like the internet and means of rapid transportation facilitate such encounters. The same holds true for multinational organizations that expand globally and thus incorporate people with all kinds of cultural orientations in their workforce.
Organizations and societal fields such as the labor market, education, health care and arts and culture are increasingly made up of employees and citizens with different identities and have to deal with customers and citizens with diverse orientations and world views.

Numerous questions are raised in this multicultural, multinational framework, such as:
•What does it mean to a hospital when patients with various religious beliefs need tailor-made care?
•How are production and service delivery affected when people from all parts of the world come together to communicate and work in a company?
•What are the consequences when citizens representing different identities, traditions, languages and beliefs send their children to mixed schools?
•Do people with different ethnic backgrounds get equal opportunities in the labor market?

Cultural diversity entails both risks and opportunities
•Risks: think of miscommunication, conflict and exclusion.
•Opportunities: think of innovating ideas, creativity and renewal of production and service delivery.

Consequently, there is need for management, policy and intervention to deal with these risks and opportunities, i.e. to neutralize the risks and take advantage of the opportunities presented by cultural diversity.

Do you want to identify these issues and provide management and policy solutions?
There are as yet no management and policy solutions available. New answers need to be developed in each specific case, place, organization or field based on a sound understanding of the issues involved at that moment and in that particular context.
Tilburg University is well-positioned to offer such a program. It has at its disposal of high-level and internationally oriented expertise in the various relevant academic fields, embodied by teaching staff firmly embedded in and intellectually nourished by relevant research programs.

Career Perspective Management of Cultural Diversity

The program offers a Master’s career to prepare students for jobs focusing on management and policy intervention regarding cultural diversity in organizations and societal fields. The program will have an explicit international orientation so students are expected to find a place on the labor market in a variety of countries in Europe and beyond. Your work will either focus on management of a culturally diverse workforce within companies and organizations (profit and non-profit) or you will be working on policy development and implementation regarding issues of cultural diversity in society within governmental organizations or NGOs.

Ritual in Society is a renewed, fully English-taught Master's specialization within the Master's program Culture Studies.

Rituals are indispensable for human beings, in past and present. The important moments in human life are always highlighted by rituals. In addition to ritual’s traditional function of marking key moments in human life, people assign great value to rituals as instruments to achieve social cohesion, as means of coping with grief and bereavement, and as powerful tools to remember the past. Apart from such a predominantly positive use of rituals, it should be noted that ritual is also a contested phenomenon. Ritual is all about inclusion and exclusion and about power and display in the public domain. Moreover, ritual is dynamic and fluid; it is an excellent gauge of cultural diversity and societal developments. Therefore, the study of ritual is of vital importance for understanding society.

Your lecturers are nationally and internationally renowned scholars who will introduce you to the field of ritual studies on the basis of their own research. They will present to you both the state of the art in ritual studies as well as the most recent developments in their various disciplines. The MA in Ritual in Society offers you a unique, multidisciplinary program with a focus on ritual dynamics in contemporary Europe with regular forays into the global context.

Career Perspective Ritual in Society

The program offers a Master’s career to prepare students for jobs in areas ranging from research to the world of travel and tourism (travel agencies) and from education to consultancy and management. The program will have an explicit international orientation so students are expected to find jobs in the labor market in a variety of countries in Europe and beyond. More specifically, Ritual in Society prepares you for jobs in fields like:
•Research (PhD; contract research)
•Education
•Ritual facilitator
•Ritual consultancy
•Consultancy (culture; memory culture; museum)
•Journalism
