The developments of the internet have given database journalism a new definition, according to which it defines a process where the database becomes the center of the journalistic work (as opposed to the story in traditional journalism). Art, Media and Society is a renewed, fully English-taught Master's specialization within the Master's program Culture Studies.

The Master’s specialization in Art, Media and Society focuses on the transformations that cultural products undergo as a result of digitalization and globalization. In this program you will analyze how digital cultural products and artefacts critically reflect societal issues, such as the financial crisis, the rise of populism or the ‘tyranny of intimacy’ of social media. Furthermore, you will investigate the public impact of activities carried out by a range of different authors and artists. You will use theories and analytical tools to understand what is at stake here. Central questions are: How can art reshape the public sphere? What are new dimensions of information in the current public sphere?

As a student of Art, Media and Society, you take an interdisciplinary approach to media and art in the modern digital and culturally diverse society, and find yourself at the interface between culture, media, aesthetics and politics.

In this Master’s program, you study digital cultural products and artefacts in contemporary society: phenomena of high and mass culture as well as fashion and advertising, narrative forms of expression such as journalism and personal blogging, as well as literature and visual art focusing on varied purposes: to articulate human rights, to challenge neoliberal development, and to forge alternative local and transnational solidarities. You investigate how information circulates in various contexts, what the social, political and ethical implications are of cultural products, and how roles of producing and consuming these products are negotiated.

In addition, you study theories about the way cultural products and artefacts are experienced and responded to. You practice and further develop your ability to communicate your knowledge and to define, formulate, develop and implement projects. The purpose of the Master’s specialization in Art, Media and Society is to educate professionals with clear profiles.

Communication Design

One of the essential ways in which information is transferred and communicated is through text, whether verbal or written. Texts should inform or convince, depending on the communication objectives. Communication designers research different factors that can affect a text in order to create an effective communication tool. These factors can be characteristics of the text, such as style and structure, but also the conversation characteristics and the influence of non-verbal communication.

Furthermore, the context and purpose of a text and how readers process information also play a major role in communication. In the English-taught Master's specialization in Communication Design, you will research how communication processes work and how you can influence these processes effectively. You will learn to analyze texts and tailor them to different target groups and acquire knowledge about how to measure whether in practice a text has the desired effect.

Career Prospects Communication Design

After completing the Communication Design specialization, you will be able to conduct research on the transfer of information through text. Moreover, you will be capable of advising people about writing a clear, attractive and convincing text according to various communication objectives. You can embark on a career in different positions within profit or non-profit organizations, government agencies and related organizations or in the business world.

After graduating, you could also continue your career as an academic researcher in the broad field of communication.

This is a small selection of positions you may apply for after you have completed your programme:
•Communication Design Manager
•Communication Strategist
•Advertising Design Strategist
•Communication Design Engineer
•Device User Experience Design Specialist
•Design Researcher

Global Communication is a new, fully English-taught Master's specialization within the Master's program Culture Studies.

Modern life is seriously affected by globalization. Between cradle and grave you encounter thousands of situations in which you interact with people who do not share the same background as you. We are more mobile, fewer of us stay in the same place for all or most of our lives and our everyday contacts span many different social groups. In addition, the internet gives us unlimited access to people and information and enables us to communicate without being constrained by time and place. These aspects of globalization have made societies ‘superdiverse’.
Living in a superdiverse world requires a flexible and expansive communicative repertoire. You need to be sensitive to variation in communicative behavior across social groups and across different settings, including offline and online modes of communication.

In the Master’s specialization Global Communication the aim is to understand the communicative challenges of life in times of globalization and superdiversity. This entails knowing about the phenomena to which globalization gives rise, knowing about how people acquire and use the communicative skills one needs to succeed, knowing what roles education and policy making plays in this, and knowing about how all this contact between cultures or sub-cultures affects the people it concerns.

Career perspective Global Communication

Global Communication prepares you for a career in today’s global, digital and cultural diverse society.

More specific, our alumni work as:
•PR coordinator
•Public communications specialist
•(Web)editor
•Communications coordinator

Educational Post-Master

Moreover, Dutch graduates have the possibility to follow a one year educational post-master to become a teacher.

The Research Master's program in Language and Communication is a two-year course of study offered jointly by Tilburg University and Radboud University Nijmegen. Read more
The Research Master's program in Language and Communication is a two-year course of study offered jointly by Tilburg University and Radboud University Nijmegen. Both universities combine leading-edge research with excellent education. This program, with its strong emphasis on empirical study, is unique in the Netherlands.

The empirical study of the human capacity for communication

The program covers the numerous ways in which written and spoken language is used - for example, to persuade, to inform, and to exchange ideas. Because communication and the use of language are so tightly interwoven, we take an integrated approach. For example, when other, non-verbal cues are taken into account, understanding spoken language is made easier. Such cues may include facial expressions and eye contact. The interrelationships between language and communication have been further illuminated by developments in information and communication technology. These have opened up exciting new areas of research, providing insight, for example, into ways in which information from both linguistic and non-linguistic sources can be integrated in multimodal messages.

What makes this program special?

What is the main difference between this two-year full-time program and Master's programs at other universities in the Netherlands? Firstly, the fact that we use empirical research techniques to focus on language as it is actually used. And, secondly, there is the way we explore language and communication as an integrated whole. Communication in face-to-face and multi-modal interactions at work is a central theme. Other topics include understanding ways in which the use of language shapes institutional, cross-cultural, and international interaction. The current partnership between Tilburg University, School of Humanities and Radboud University Nijmegen, Faculty of Arts intensifies fifteen years of collaboration in the Centre for Language Studies (CLS). CLS is closely linked to the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (MPI) and the Baby Research Centre. This Research Master's program, which relies heavily on research carried out in Tilburg and Nijmegen, is open to all graduates - from universities inside or outside the Netherlands- with a relevant BA or one-year MA.

Tutor system

Tutors are members of the scientific staff. They advise students on how to arrive at the most appropriate training program (this includes things like how best to make up for deficiencies in their previous training, and which electives are best suited to which specialisations). Besides this, tutors also advise the Graduate School with respect to students' requests for facilities. Tutors are assigned to students by the Examination Committee.

Career Perspective Research Master in Language & Communication

The main focus of this Research Master’s program is on academic training, which makes it ideal for those wishing to embark on a career in research. Besides research positions at universities, there are research and management positions in businesses, (non-) profit organizations, the educational sector and the government (e.g., the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science), which require extensive research skills but not a PhD degree.

In addition this Research Master’s program caters for the growing demand from the public and private sectors for university graduates with academic insights and research skills. Many graduates will join research groups in the public or private sectors. These may address a wide range of topics such as advanced internet, enhancing professional communication, politics and administration, journalism and education in an international context.
