We have 1 Masters Degrees in Thessaloniki, Greece

Thessaloniki is a vibrant port city sometimes referred to as the cultural capital of Greece. Located in Northern Greece along the coast of the Aegean Sea, Thessaloniki has a history stretching back thousands of years to the time of Alexander the Great. Thessaloniki is an important centre of higher education in Greece, with several universities based in the city including Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

What’s it like to study a Masters in Thessaloniki?

Named after one of Alexander the Great’s sisters, Thessaloniki was founded in 316 BCE. A turbulent history saw it fall under the control and influence of various empires over the centuries, including the Romans, Byzantines and Venetians. Eventually, Thessaloniki became part of the Ottoman Empire for almost 500 years (it was the birthplace of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the modern Republic of Turkey).

Thessaloniki’s tumultuous past is one of the reasons why the modern-day city is such a diverse place, with an eclectic mix of architecture spanning the centuries and excellent cultural opportunities. From the Byzantine city walls to the iconic White Tower built by the Ottomans, Thessaloniki is an architectural gem. The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki – one of the largest in Greece – is a world-class collection of ancient artefacts, while the Museum of Byzantine Culture displays over 3,000 objects from that era.

Thessaloniki isn’t just about the past, though: its New Waterfront, completed in 2014, is an attractively redeveloped public space that makes the most of the city’s coastal setting. The significant student population of around 150,000 contributes to Thessaloniki’s youthful, lively atmosphere and helps explain why Thessaloniki was given the title of European Youth Capital in 2014.

Universities in Thessaloniki

There are several universities and higher education institutions in Thessaloniki, ranging from large public research universities to smaller foreign colleges based in the city. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is the largest in Greece and among its most prestigious, while the University of Macedonia has a strong background in Economics and Social Sciences. The International Hellenic University is the only Greek university where all programmes are taught in English.

The University of Sheffield International Faculty, CITY College has its main campus in Thessaloniki, along with the American College of Thessaloniki.
