COURSE OVERVIEW

This course commences in January each year. This intensely practical and pioneering course aims to prepare students for a successful future in multi-camera studio entertainment production. Students are taught by NFTS staff and visiting Industry Professionals and have hands-on experience of a variety of studio roles as well as in their specialisation.

Students will apply for, and be accepted onto the course in one of three craft specialisations:

I. Cameras and Lighting
Practise the core skills of TV studio camera operators, positioning the camera, framing and focus. Learn to use broadcast cameras in a multi-camera studio, repositioning and changing shot as the director demands while the vision mixer cuts and mixes the show. Learn to develop shots, moving with artists or in sympathy with music to create dynamic and exciting television. Begin to light simple interviews and more complex multi-camera lighting techniques. You’ll need a passion for pictures, quick reactions, clear and proactive thinking with excellent co-ordination and a good sense of musical rhythm.

II. Vision Mixing
Train on sophisticated broadcast vision mixing consoles, build and realise complex live visual effects to the director’s brief. Using these high-end production tools, Vision Mixing is like editing - but in real time! Cut, mix and wipe between cameras, pre-edited clips and other video sources live. Learn how to mix a variety of genres from situation comedy to fast paced entertainment and music shows adding digital effects and captioning in real time. You’ll need to be logical, quick thinking, calm under pressure and have an excellent feel for timing and rhythm, both dramatic and musical.

III. Sound (in a broadcast studio environment)
Sound carries the story, sets the mood and the tempo. It provides the enabling structure against which TV pictures can shine. Good sound is essential to a TV programme. Learn how to choose and place microphones for the best results for a variety of shows including live music. Train to use ‘Fisher booms’ - in great demand for sitcoms and soaps - to pick up drama dialogue. Mix studio sound in real time using sophisticated broadcast desks. Enhance the show with spot effects, music cues and audio processing to create atmosphere and energy. Learn how to manage TV comms including studio talkback systems allowing key production team members to communicate and collaborate effectively. You’ll need to be a quick, logical thinker, have a ‘good ear’ and a passion for high quality sound.

These are the core disciplines of multi camera studio operations and people trained at a high level in these craft areas are hotly in demand.

CURRICULUM

Students will be exposed to the creative challenge of working across a range of entertainment programming, including: Situation Comedy, Magazine Shows, Talent Shows, Panel Shows, Game Shows etc.

The award focuses on developing students’ specific capabilities, in the following areas:
-The language of entertainment television so that they can work effectively within production teams
-A high level technical understanding of their chosen specialist area
-A critical awareness of the production workflow and the impact of multiplatform on production

Modules include:
-The Grammar of Television Entertainment
-Media Technology
-Music and Magazine Programming
-Chat Shows and Panel Shows
-Comedy

The six week internship at Sky is constituted of two distinct elements. Firstly the student will shadow a Sky Production Services member of staff working in their specialisation (Vision Mixer, Sound, Camera/Lighting). This will cement the students understanding of the wide range of professional practices and competencies associated with each role. Secondly, students will undertake a range of simulated exercises (designed by the NFTS with Sky involvement) to hone their craft and understanding on the Sky equipment.

At the end of the course, students will be well placed to work professionally in their chosen job role within broadcast production. They will also have a thorough understanding of the television production process encompassing everything from the creative to the technical and the business aspects.

Unlike other schools, all production costs are met by the School. In addition you will be given a cash Production Budget. NFTS students are engaged in more productions as part of the curriculum than any of our competitors.

This new, tailor-made course is delivered in partnership with the BBC and is designed to thoroughly train participants in becoming a key member of a drama or entertainment production team.

Participants will learn from practical hands-on workshops and through on set and in studio experience on a range of drama and entertainment projects. This will ensure that participants leave the course with the practical experience for starting out in the professional world.

The Script Supervisor’s role is an exciting, varied and demanding job requiring many skills for being part of the production team, working closely with directors and producers, interacting with performers and programme participants, and providing accurate information on location, in the studio gallery and for the edit suite.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Script Supervisor is a key member of the production team, preparing and providing scripts, running orders, camera cards and information, prior to a rehearsal, recording or shooting day. In the studio, they keep the production team informed through cueing, timings, shotcalling, liaising with presentation, and maintaining an accurate log. They support the director and producer and are responsible for getting live transmission programmes on and off air. On single camera shoots, they are vital for continuity, keeping track of takes, timings, shooting angles, costume and make-up notes and props information essential for the editor.

To do this role, you will need to:
-Be calm and level-headed
-Work well as part of a fast-moving team
-Have exceptional organisational and time-management skills
-Be able to work to a deadline
-Pay close attention to accuracy and detail
-Be an excellent communicator
-Be adaptable to changing circumstances
-Multi-task

-Have stamina for long days and hard work

CURRICULUM

This course has been developed due to industry demand and combines practical experience on film shoots with NFTS student directors on fiction films, and in the studio with NFTS Television Entertainment student directors on their entertainment shows, using the recently refurbished 4k multi-camera television studio gallery. There is time for learning to use script packages such as Adobe Story and BBC Scriptwriter, lectures on all aspects of the job involving different genres of programmes, guest speakers and site visits to other television companies and media providers.

The course is three months, based at the NFTS and divided into three sections:

Weeks 1 - 4 Full-time lectures & practical exercises covering studio and film work.

Weeks 5 - 8 On location continuity experience working on two films each

Weeks 9 - 12 Practical experience for studio-based programmes plus additional lectures and site visits.

Specifically students will learn about:
-Script layouts, call sheets, breakdowns, running orders
-Shot lists, storyboards, recording orders, shooting orders
-Setting up a production
-Script packages
-Gallery techniques (e.g. calling shots, running EVS, using a stopwatch)
-Live programmes
-Music programmes (e.g. script styles & methods)
-Bar counting
-Studio drama techniques
-Continuity for film and single camera
-Post production and editing

There will be visiting lecturers, professionals in the industry, talking about their experiences and giving advice on methods and the latest techniques. Also, practical exercises and opportunities to work in the role on other student courses.

TV Drama has entered an unprecedented era of international acclaim and success. US drama series like The Wire, Mad Men, Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad have challenged and enthused audiences across the world with TV drama that is original, complex and non-formulaic. Recent TV drama series from Denmark and Sweden have created an appetite for ground breaking thrillers such as The Killing and The Bridge as well as the political drama Borgen. There is a new appetite among UK drama commissioners and independent producers to develop work along such original lines.

COURSE OVERVIEW

‘TV Drama – Creating The Bible’ is an eight week course, requiring at least three days attendance at the NFTS in Beaconsfield each week, that will equip writers and producers with the knowledge and skills required to create a high-end ten-part drama series.

Led by Peter Ansorge, ex-Head of Drama at Channel 4, where his BAFTA and Emmy award-winning commissions included A Very British Coup, Traffik and The Politician’s Wife, participants will write and complete a full bible and pilot episode for a drama series that has the potential of running over more than one season.

The course does not follow any received academic view about screenwriting but will create the actual conditions of working on an original drama project over a period of time among professionals with a proven track record. Among the guests Peter Ansorge has brought to previous writing courses at the school are writers David Hare and Howard Brenton, producers Jane Featherstone (Kudos), Simon Heath (World Productions) and impresario Michael Grade who has been Controller of BBC1, and Chief Executive at both ITV and at Channel 4.

For ‘Creating The Bible’ guest speakers will include Heads of Development at all3media-owned drama companies such as Company Pictures (Shameless, Wolf Hall), Neal Street Productions (Call The Midwife, The Hollow Crown) and Bentley Productions (Midsommer Murders.)

There will be two days set aside each week for writing your bible and pilot episode. Also, there are homework assignments each evening which will be reviewed on screen the following morning where we will work on improving your script and bible. The working atmosphere will be that of a professional writers’ room.

Guest speakers will review the projects each week and provide professional advice and input.

All3media group comprise eighteen leading production companies, independent creators of UK TV and multi-platform programming from around the world. At the end of the course, participants will pitch their completed bible and pilot episode to Heads of Development from all3media drama companies, providing participants with a unique contact with and support from the industry.

CURRICULUM

The modules for writing the pilot episode and bible will address and attempt to answer the question: what makes great TV writing?

There will be in-depth discussion of TV Drama, past and present, including the work of Dennis Potter, Paula Milne, Alan Bleasdale, Mathew Weiner, David Simon and Vince Gilligan..

Included in the modules will be:
-The importance of metaphor
-The development of character
-The sense of place
-The importance of surprise
-The opening scene
-The sense of an ending
-Steal, don’t copy
-The rewrite: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

As the final module, you will pitch your project to an all3media drama team.

The course is open to new and established writers and drama producers. There is no requirement to have had a drama produced or broadcast.

All3 media are offering a scholarship to a candidate from a diverse background.

Successful candidates will have access to NFTS’s Screen Arts and Cinema Club.
