Situated on the south east coast of New South Wales, Sydney is Australia’s largest city by population. As well as some of Australia’s most important landmarks, Sydney is home to six universities, along with various other higher education campuses and over 200,000 students.

What’s it like to study a Masters in Sydney?

Sydney is a city with a strong multicultural tradition. Many of its residents speak a second language in addition to English and the city continues to welcome foreign visitors and settlers, including international students.

As a postgraduate student in Sydney you’ll find that life is as rich and varied as would be expected in a vibrant capital city. You’ll be able to visit some of Australia’s most famous sites and sights, including the iconic Sydney Opera House and the nearby resort of Bondi Beach (a perfect study break!). The Art Gallery of NSW is a world-renowned institution and one of the largest galleries in Australia, while the Australian Museum houses an outstanding collection that encompasses natural history and indigenous cultures.

Sydney is also a centre of international cinema, with annual film festivals and famous local actors and directors including Mel Gibson and Baz Luhrmann. Blockbuster films such as Moulin Rouge! and The Matrix have also been shot in the city. Who knows – you might be able be able to ‘star’ as an extra in the next big production!

Universities in Sydney

Sydney’s universities place well in global ranking tables and attract large numbers of international postgraduates. They include two members of Australia’s leading Group of Eight research universities: the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney (itself Australia’s oldest university, having been founded in 1850).

In addition to the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales, postgraduate courses in Sydney are also available at a number of other institutions, including the University of Technology Sydney, Macquarie University, the University of Western Sydney and the Australian Catholic University.

Other universities in the New South Wales region include the University of Newcastle, Charles Sturt University and Southern Cross University.

Careers in Sydney

Sydney is a major commercial centre that plays an important role in the Australian economy and is a global hub for business. Key sectors include financial services, ICT, robotics and aerospace, with a flourishing start-up scene in the city. As one of the biggest economic centres in the Asia Pacific region, Sydney is home to many multinationals like Amazon, Google, HSBC and Morgan Stanley.
