The renowned part-time distance learning Postgraduate Diploma from Lloyd’s Maritime Academy and the World Maritime University. The programme develops leading knowledge and awareness of international trade and maritime law, increasing understanding of how commercial trade ventures may give rise to legal issues.

With English law recognised internationally as a dominant legal system providing the basis for maritime and trade contracts, and with London as the single most important forum for settling disputes, both through court litigation and arbitration, this course approaches law in relation to how it is applied in practice.
Students may continue their studies to the degree of LL.M in International Maritime Law. The LL. M is offered in collaboration between Lloyd’s Maritime Academy, the World Maritime University.

On completing this course, you will be able to:
• Understand the principles of international trade and maritime law
• Explain the overall commercial context in which the law operates
• Analyse practical problems raising legal issues
• Learn how to apply the relevant law to problems that arise in practice
• Prepare to negotiate a dispute settlement
• Develop the capacity for independent study

Module 4 - Marine Insurance Law
Module 5 - Admiralty Law and General Average
Module 6 - Payment and Finance for International Trade
Module 7 - Litigation, Arbitration and Mediation
Module 8 - Conflict of Laws and Forum Shopping

The LLM in International Maritime Law continuation course allows students who have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Law to continue their studies to the degree of LLM.

It is also offered as a standalone programme to students who meet equivalent entry requirements.

On successful completion of the programme, students will have:
• The ability to analyse academic issues of law at postgraduate level and to be able to develop a discursive critical analysis of such issues
• The ability to develop critical discussion of a postgraduate nature that is sound and valid; i.e. so that it is methodologically “self-aware”
• A capacity for independent research that is expected of postgraduate students

Research based module: Researching Business Law:
This course will introduce you to legal research and the writing of legally researched papers
• Literature review (40% of the module)
• Research proposal (60% of the module)

Dissertation:
Your opportunity to do a major, extended piece of research on a maritime law topic of your choice. The dissertation should aim to suggest a new way of thinking about and/or improved understanding of the topic you have researched.
