The MSc in Business & Management (MBM) will develop the managerial knowledge and skills needed to excel in today’s organizations. The program will prepare you to proficiently act and to make decisions in highly uncertain and complex environments.

These contexts require innovative marketing campaigns, new product development processes, transformation projects, dynamic strategies and organizations. These are fundamental means for both nascent entrepreneurial ventures and established corporations that strive to maintain their edge through ongoing renewal.

Program content and pedagogy

The MBM program is based on a live pedagogy, where most of the learning occurs through real-life projects, internships and practical experience. You will work with real challenges faced by real stakeholders, who expect sound analyses and actionable solutions. These outcomes will be achieved by putting into action the theories and methods learned in class. Running in parallel to the courses, a skills track focusing on personal and social development will nurture your ability to manage yourself and the people around you.

The core curriculum of the program builds on the academic disciplines of management and marketing. These disciplines offer vital tools for next-generation managers who need to combine creativity and innovative thinking with market analyses and communication strategies, to manage projects and drive change within and across organizations, and to integrate knowledge from different fields and social networks.

An exclusive program for highly talented students

The MBM program offers an intimate learning environment that stimulates critical thinking, open debate, developmental feedback, close relationships, and fruitful contacts that will remain useful throughout each student’s future career. The faculty is passionately committed to each student’s learning: they bring to class the academic rigor of their research together with concrete insights on contemporary business issues, stemming from their ongoing conversation with various stakeholders.

All in all, the program rests on a vision of future leaders who are creative, entrepreneurial, reflective, and responsible. The challenges linked to global sustainability offer tremendous opportunities to such leaders. If you aim to be one of them, the MBM is the right path to realize your ambitions.

Degree: Master of Science (120 credits) with a major in Business Administration

Teaching language: English

In the two-year master’s program in Business Administration - Strategy and Management in International Organizations (SMIO), we aim to educate future leaders with good judgment, who can analyze complex problems and make well-balanced decisions.

The program combines fundamental academic knowledge (thinking and reasoning) and experiential knowledge (skills) to prepare students to go beyond applying known solutions to known problems.

The learning pillars of the program are research-based knowledge grounded in rich empirical examples, a focus on critical and in-depth analysis, and communication of results. The program combines the depth of a research master with the rich practical examples and casework-intensity of a more practical master. The program courses therefore each lay a solid research foundation in the form of articles and books by both classic and contemporary great thinkers. On top of that, each course provides insights into the workings of a number of international organizations (ranging from Starbucks and Apple to The Red Cross) and empirical phenomena (from CSR and outsourcing trends to business development in East Africa). Students then use their research-based foundation to draw connections, define problems and analyze through for example casework and projects. Each course also practices the students’ communication skills in one or more areas, through the writing of argumentative essays, oral presentations, feedback-sessions, debates and café seminars.

The program seeks to simulate the future work environment of the students, and hence learning processes are centered in teamwork, leadership and organization, and set in an environment where the study tempo and expectations are high and the diversity of people great. The cultural mix enables us to use the class itself as a teaching tool, where the development of cross-cultural competences becomes a positive side effect of for example team projects.

From day one, we actively work with team processes where taken-for-granted ideas are challenged and the students’ abilities are stretched, step-by-step. Our SMIO students are typically highly committed and hard-working, used to assuming responsibility, and working under pressure in a multicultural environment where a variety of perspectives have to be turned into workable solutions. Challenging assignments and tight deadlines hone the students’ bonds and SMIO students therefore generally get to know each other well, forming an international network for the future.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will have acquired analytical skills, problem-solving skills, and a solid strategic foundation. They will also be seasoned team workers with an international outlook, who are used to embracing complexity.

The MSc in Accounting and Financial Management is designed to prepare students for careers such as financial analyst, business controller, chief financial officer (CFO), investment banker, consultant and auditor.

As a graduate from this program you will have a deep understanding of how financial and non-financial controls can be integrated and used for steering purposes in multinational companies, how large companies report to external share- and stakeholders and how those evaluate the financial and non-financial performance of companies in for example valuation settings.

Key topics include financial reporting principles, business control, capital budgeting, financial analysis and corporate valuation. In all these courses you will take an analytical and international perspective. For example, in the financial reporting core courses you will focus on the main concepts and principles that lie behind most international accounting standards such as IFRS. Consequently, the insights you get in the program remain valuable also when concrete financial standards change. SSE sees accounting as a language you need to understand in order to properly analyze and understand a business corporation.

As a top level program with a relatively low number of students, SSE can offer an intimate and creative learning environment. SSE's faculty (all active researchers) is engaged in pedagogical development and intrigued by the learning journey of the students. "The line between disorder and order lies in logistics" Sun Tzu (Ancient Chinese military general, strategist and philosopher).

"Leaders win through logistics" Tom Peters (Management Guru)

As these quotes suggest, the freight transport and logistics discipline is increasingly recognized as pivotal to sound decision making and organizational success in meeting business objectives. The globalization of production and consumption has led to a situation where logistics decision makers must constantly strive to deal with the complex challenges associated with internationally distributed production, trade and transport networks. In order to ensure and maintain both profitability and competitiveness, organizations need to constantly review their logistical requirements in order to adapt to potentially volatile changes in customer demand and technological developments. The environmental imperative has introduced a whole new and, from a societal perspective, vitally important dynamic into the logistics and freight transport arena.

Within the EU alone, the freight transport and logistics sector employs 6 million people and has an added value of some €15 billion. Freight transport and logistics influences virtually all industrial and public sector activities and affects every citizen s daily life. The M.Sc. in Logistics and Transport Management prepares you for truly multifaceted challenges, requiring a balance between theoretical and practical skills. The programme provides an intellectually stimulating environment, within which you will develop your skills in critical thinking and analysis, as well as improving your knowledge of, and strategic perspective on, the relationships, flows, chains, processes and systems that pervade the international freight transport and logistics arena. You will analyze problems, both theoretical and real-life, and design solutions for organizations operating under uncertainty and facing complex and rapidly changing markets and technologies.

In pursuing this programme, you will benefit from our strong research and educational links with the logistics industry locally, nationally and globally. Significant emphasis is placed on the use of state-of-the-art logistical software, as well as real world examples and case studies, some of which are implemented in close cooperation with established businesses from the logistics community. Furthermore, the core logistics faculty is supplemented by prestigious international visiting professors and representatives of the business community. The programme also provides opportunities for field work in an international environment at respected universities in Europe and overseas.

Graduates from the M.Sc. in Logistics and Transport Management programme enjoy a variety of exciting and rewarding careers. For example, amongst other things, our alumni are employed as purchasers, logistics consultants, supply planners, shipping coordinators, freight forwarders, chartering agents, shipbrokers and supply chain managers. The programme comprises 60 credits of core courses, 30 credits of elective courses and a further 30 credits related to the Master’s thesis.

Throughout the programme, both Scandinavian and international contexts are used as case studies, and the programme is carried out in close collaboration with industry partners and external organisations.

The programme strives to offer an international classroom environment and bring together students from different backgrounds and experiences. This allows students to deepen their knowledge and gain an overview based on the academic backgrounds and practical experience of other students, which will allow them to be able to work transcultural in their future professions.

What career will I be prepared for?

After completing the programme, you will have significantly deepened your knowledge and understanding of sport in relation to society's change processes, and have the competence, knowledge and understanding required to work with sport in relation to sustainable development and social change.

The education is relevant for a wide range of jobs and roles where sport is used in the context of change, ranging from working with elite athletes to sporting federations or public health sectors.

Content

The programme aims for the student to develop applied skills and a critical knowledge base in order to work with sport, leisure and health industries as sites for social change. Emphasis is placed on an in-depth ability to use different theories and methods for understanding, analysing, changing and using sport towards a sustainable and equal society.

The concept of sustainable society includes social, economic and environmental perspectives. Furthermore, the programme aims at providing local, regional, national and international perspectives on sports, sports science and a sustainable society. Urban and innovative local environments, with associated challenges and initiatives, are used as living case studies. The students also actively contribute with experiences from different countries and sports cultures. Based on these, the students problematize the Swedish and Scandinavian sports context.

The student is given the opportunity to develop skills and in-depth knowledge suitable for a wide range of jobs, entrepreneurship, and research in fields where sports and health are used, for example, to meet or create changes and contribute to social development. The student works for this in close dialogue with stakeholders external to the university.

When it comes to choosing an Executive MBA, there is a lot to be taken into consideration. The content of the program, its reputation, the potential network you'll gain, but also the location and setting of the school. Here SSE is proud to offer you Stockholm, a city in motion filled with opportunities, and the capital of Scandinavia.

This multidisciplinary master’s degree programme provides in-depth knowledge on sustainable development and sustainability leadership. The programme provides students with an understanding of organisation and leadership theory in the context of sustainability. It also provides students with an understanding of research methods for sustainable decision-making. The education lays a solid foundation for those seeking to lead or manage sustainable initiatives in the workplace, community and the world.

What is Leadership for Sustainability about?

The master’s degree programme is grounded in four core premises:

1. Sustainability requires new forms of organising, especially when it comes to project-based organisations involving diverse stakeholders.

2. Organising and leading sustainability requires new and diverse leading and organising skills, understanding and knowledge for managers and leaders of sustainable projects.

3. Organising and leading sustainability requires a new way of thinking sustainability within and between organisations. Current research on social entrepreneurship and social innovation can reveal new methods and strategies with regards to this.

4. Methodological and methodical knowledge and understanding are needed to enable leaders to make sustainable decisions.

Based on these four premises, the programme bridges together the fields of organisation theory, leadership, project management, social innovation and social entrepreneurship so that together new ways of organising and leading sustainability can be created. This will enable students to rethink commonly held perceptions of leadership and organisational development.

What makes Leadership for Sustainability unique?

In this programme students are taught to reflect upon organisational and leadership challenges linked to organisational development and sustainability. This programme provides students with knowledge and critical understanding of current research in the fields of leadership and organisation, project management, social entrepreneurship and social innovation in the context of sustainability and sustainable development.

This master's programme is also focused on action and doing via diverse projects and even via the thesis work. This is a way to develop students’ professional, conceptual and human skills so that as for example future sustainable leaders and social entrepreneurs, they will drive sustainable changes and have the capacity to make informed decisions about organisational and leadership issues in the management of sustainable organisations and projects.

Finally, embedded in this program is the idea that sustainability can be reached if individuals rethink commonly held perceptions of leadership and organisational development.

Teaching methods

TeachingLectures, seminars, and workshop enable interaction in small and large class. Group work is used to generate discussions about sustainability, especially while doing case studies. Study visits and guest lectures connect learning with practice. Individual papers, individual studies and the thesis work enable to focus and gain specific and in-depth knowledge to master the subject at hand.

What career will I be prepared for?

This programme lays a solid foundation for those seeking to work as key players in project management and organisational development environments, and where the broader issues of societal development are important. The skills acquired will be relevant for managers in local, national and international governmental bodies, the private and non-profit sector and in consultancy work.

The entrepreneurial content of the course is designed to stimulate and encourage students to initiate projects, businesses or organisations with the purpose of working towards sustainable development.
