Located 100km west of Shanghai, Suzhou is a major city renowned for its historic canals and beautiful gardens, earning its nickname of ‘the Venice of the East’. There are three universities in Suzhou, including Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) – the largest international joint venture university in China.
Suzhou was founded in 514 BCE and has long occupied an important position along the Yangtze River Delta. Part of China’s famous Grand Canal – the oldest and longest canal in the world, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – runs through Suzhou, helping the city develop into an early economic power. Marco Polo visited Suzhou in the 13th century, by which time it was already flourishing as a centre for silk and trade, and was struck by the beauty of its waterways.
The Classical Gardens of Suzhou are another major attraction for visitors to the city, recognised by UNESCO as an outstanding example of Chinese garden design. Dating back to the 11th century, this collection of gardens are praised for their elegance and tranquillity. Tiger Hill is also a popular destination, featuring several historically significant sites and an impressive pagoda.
Contemporary Suzhou has plenty to recommend it, too. The Suzhou Museum was designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei and is adjacent to the Garden of the Humble Administrator (one of the most famous gardens in Suzhou). Combining traditional Suzhou architecture with more modern geometry, the museum has an outstanding collection of Suzhou artefacts.
The megapolis of Shanghai can be reached in under half an hour from Suzhou by high speed train, while Beijing is around five hours away via bullet train.
Soochow University and Suzhou University of Science and Technology are both public universities in Suzhou that offer a range of Masters programmes in English. Soochow University is a comprehensive institution, while Suzhou University of Science and Technology focuses on Engineering.
Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a joint venture between Xi’an Jiaotong and the University of Liverpool, offering a wide selection of UK-accredited postgraduate programmes in English. Established in 2006, XJTLU now has more than 10,000 students.
Suzhou is home to the Suzhou Industrial Park, one of China’s most important and fastest growing economic zones. A collaborative project between the Chinese and Singaporean governments, Suzhou Industrial Park aims to foster innovation and attract foreign investment. It’s also where the XJTLU campus is based, enabling close links between the university and local industry.
