Staffordshire University Masters Program
The MSc in Health Psychology operates within the general framework for the University Modular Masters Programme. To obtain an MSc in Health Psychology you will have to complete modules worth 180 credits. This programme of study normally takes 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time to complete. It is also possible to obtain a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Psychology following the completion of taught modules worth 60 credits, or a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Psychology having completed taught modules worth 120 credits.

Full time students attend weekly sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Part time students attend on Thursdays in the first year, and Tuesdays in the second year.

Employment opportunities

Graduates from the MSc Health Psychology go on to work in a range of settings such as: research assistantships, trainee psychologists, systematic reviewers, stop-smoking advisors, IAPT practitioners, and PhD studentships.

Staffordshire University also offers a Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology which provides Stage Two professional training in Health Psychology with full-time and part-time modes of study.

Other admission requirements

Applicants who have not completed their degree at a recognised UK university must obtain Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC) from the British Psychological Society (BPS) and include evidence of this with their application. Applicants whose first language is not English must have achieved 7.0 or above on all components of the IELTS and provide evidence of this with their application.

Health psychology can be defined as the study of psychological processes and their application to health, illness and health care. The Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology programme provides supervision to enable students to develop skills in research, teaching, professional skills and consultancy. The programme runs for a minimum of two years for full-time students, and a minimum of four years for part-time students. The award follows closely the framework for Stage 2 professional training in health psychology, which is set by the Division of Health Psychology of the British Psychological Society.

Graduates from this award gain Stage 2 accreditation towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist and eligibility to apply to register as a Health Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The programme has been designed to equip students with D-level skills in research, teaching, consultancy, professional practice and behaviour change interventions. The qualification provides a guarantee for employers and clients of competence in core aspects of health psychology and professional practice, including research, consultancy, and teaching skills.

After enrolment, you will take part in a two-day induction programme. This is designed to cover all modules, and will introduce you to the competencies required on the course, and to the University facilities. This will be followed by a supportive programme of workshops which runs throughout the year, covering all five competencies:
-Advanced Research Methods: You will be guided in how to independently, critically review research literature, design a study, collect and analyse data, and interpret and report results.

-Teaching in Health Psychology: In this module you will develop your teaching skills, enabling you to teach two different types of students, one of which must be health care professionals.

The Staffordshire University Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) is an integrated 3-year full time course leading to a professional qualification in Clinical Psychology. It is a collaborative venture between the University and clinical psychologists in Shropshire and Staffordshire. The course is approved by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). The curriculum is based on the HCPC Standards of Education and Training and Standards of Proficiency and the BPS Accreditation Criteria. Graduates are eligible to apply for Practitioner Psychologist Registration with the HCPC and Chartered Psychologist status with the BPS.

Our curriculum is designed to develop clinicians who can draw on a broad range of psychological models and theories to inform their clinical work and who have the confidence to use a variety of research methods appropriate to addressing clinical questions. An important strand running through the course is the impact of society and context upon psychological wellbeing, and we attempt to ensure that issues of difference and diversity are fully addressed. We encourage our trainees to be alert to the changing health needs of the population, the NHS, and the research base that informs clinical practice. We encourage trainees to be mindful of power differences within professional relationships. We value service user and carer perspectives, and the active role service users/carers can play in the planning and development of services.

Course content

The course is full-time for three years and attendance at all course components is mandatory. The length of the course cannot be reduced through the accreditation of prior learning or experience.
Trainees' time on the course is divided between academic work, research, individual study time and clinical experience. Each academic year begins with a mandatory induction block of up to six weeks, plus mandatory NHS Trust training in Year 1, to prepare trainees for safe and effective practice in their supervised clinical work.

Academic Teaching
Academic teaching consists of workshops, lectures, seminars, and online learning. It covers a broad range of topics in psychology, providing the knowledge base for practice and training in clinical, professional, therapeutic, and research skills. Teaching in Years 1 and 2 is closely linked with the competencies that are assessed on placements, whilst teaching in Year 3 focuses more on specialist skills. Teaching is provided by course staff supported by Clinical Psychologists and Service Users from the course area and beyond.

Clinical Experience
Clinical placements are mostly located in services within NHS Trusts in Shropshire and Staffordshire where clinical psychology is a strong and well-developed profession. The Clinical Director is responsible for planning placements with each trainee to offer a coherent and effective experience. Clinical placements start after induction blocks and take place in a wide range of hospitals, clinics, community centres, and independent sector agencies. In Year 1 trainees are normally placed in the same geographical area as their employer. Trainees have a degree of choice over their third year clinical experience. During each year, trainees work with up to three Main Supervisors who assume responsibility for supervising the work over time periods ranging between 3 and 12 months (typically six months), amounting to a minimum number of placement days overall. Trainees may also undertake specific pieces of work with other supervisors. Each trainee develops an Individual Learning Portfolio which is drawn up by the trainee in discussion with the Main Supervisors, the Clinical Director/Tutor and their Personal Tutor.

Research
The research component of the course encompasses research methods training (qualitative and quantitative methods) and the process of conducting clinically relevant research. Assessed research activities include critical appraisal of literature; a research proposal; a research methods examination; a service evaluation project; and a major research thesis incorporating a literature review, an empirical paper, and a summary report. Thesis papers should be of publishable standard and at least one paper must be submitted to a nominated journal. The thesis is initiated early in Year 1 and completed in the second semester of Year 3. There is considerable scope for choice of research topic and methodologies, provided that they are in line with national and/or local research priorities and with available supervision. Trainees are co-supervised by academics from Staffordshire University and local clinicians. Trainees have access to a wide range of University and NHS library and online resources to support research activity.

Other admission requirements

Experience requirements
Candidates must have a minimum of one year full-time (or part-time equivalent) practical experience of working with people in a human service setting. Applicants with experience outside traditional health/caring settings are encouraged to apply, and should clearly outline how the experience is relevant to the profession and study of clinical psychology. If necessary, candidates should include further information to this effect about their relevant work experience in the personal statement section of the application form.

Relevant examples could include the demonstration of skills in: understanding different issues for people across the life-span; understanding the impact of different social circumstances on psychological distress and wellbeing; working with a range of other professionals; experience of psychometric assessment or other forms of assessment; assisting service users to have a voice; gaining some understanding or experience of the NHS and Social Care services etc.

Clinically related research may also be considered appropriate experience, but this would need to comprise involvement in the research process that has included direct client contact, thereby demonstrating appropriate skills. Completion of a higher degree would not in itself evidence sufficient research experience. Doctoral training is clinically, emotionally and academically demanding, therefore candidates need to demonstrate aptitude for this level of work and show how they will manage the demands of training.

The full-time Masters in Counselling Psychology is a professional training in counselling. This MSc programme in Counselling Psychology is founded on a person-centred view of personhood and person-centred ways of being. In this we view the relationship in counselling as central, and support Rogers’ belief in the ‘self-therapeutic capacity and wisdom of clients’. However, we also take a strong ‘anti-schoolism’ stance which reflects our sincere respect for other, non-person-centred practices and practitioners. Our starting point for the Keele Counselling Model is thus a unifying ethos which enables us to respect and welcome a diversity of professional skills and orientations.

The programme offers to students a thorough theoretical grounding in person-centred/humanistic counselling and an introduction to research methodology. The principles underpinning the programme are empowerment, holistic development, relationships and community.

Teaching & Assessment

With the exception of a multiple-choice questionnaire classroom test, all modules are assessed on the basis of coursework.

The pass mark for a module is 50%. The dissertation is a piece of independent research written up in 20,000 words. Masters students attaining exceptional performance (course average of at least 70% including 70%+ for the dissertation) may be awarded a distinction.

Additional Costs

- Students are required to attend a minimum of 20 hours of personal therapy to complete the course and payment for this is the responsibility of the students. An average cost for personal therapy is approximately £35 - £45 per hour.

- When completing the 100 hour placement requirement, students also have to undertake a minimum of 14 hours of supervision for which there may also be a charge. Again, an average cost for supervision is approximately £35 - £45 per hour.

- Parking is also an additional cost for students who wish to use their cars on campus. Details of student parking permits are sent out with the pre-enrolment information.

- Students are also expected to pay travel costs to and from their placements.

- Students should also be aware that possible additional costs may be incurred when attending the compulsory non-residential Conference weekend. Refreshments and lunches are provided for the students free of charge during the weekend but there will be an additional cost should students wish to attend the Saturday evening Conference dinner and also if wishing to book local accommodation.

Keele has a vibrant, well-established and ever-expanding community of researchers in child development. Students will benefit from their expertise across a wide range of areas including child social development (e.g. bullying and peer relationships), child cognitive development (e.g. theory of mind, attention in autism and ADHD) and education (e.g. girls and science and enhancing collaborative learning in the classroom). Course Aims

The programme provides taught content and research training in a range of areas in Child Development, building on areas of staff research expertise. Strengths include: children’s peer relationships, e.g. bullying in schools; children’s trust in health professionals; written emotional expression in adolescents; eye movements in children with autism and ADHD; how an understanding of the nature of knowledge and beliefs develops in children and young adults; social influences on learning, such as how teachers use feedback in the classroom; and how to promote collaborative learning; factors that influence children’s subject choices, e.g. girls and science; children’s musical development and engagement; and parenting, e.g. interactions at family mealtimes.

We have well-established links with local schools and have created research partnerships where students come to the university to experience learning in a university setting as well as allowing our students to gain valuable experience working and collecting data in a school setting. We also run the project White Water Writers which gives groups of young people the chance to write and publish their own full length novel in a week. We work with local primary, secondary, SEN and other youth groups such as looked after children and MSc students are given the opportunity to take the lead in running this project.

The programme addresses written and communication skills, independent learning skills, data analysis, critical reflection and critical evaluation. Our students benefit from a wide range of support including accessible academic staff with a wide range of expertise, laboratory and other research space, study space, and access to IT and research tools.

-To contribute towards the requirements of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies for accreditation as a cognitive behavioural therapist.
-Teaching and supervision sessions take place at the Centre of Excellence in Healthcare Education Stafford and in the Learning Centre of St George’s Hospital in Stafford.

Have access to a BABCP accredited workplace supervisor who can offer regular supervision. Meet the Staffordshire University required level of proficiency in English (Level 6).

This course will be of interest to professionals working with older people in the public, independent and voluntary sectors, as well as those wishing to pursue studies or a career in ageing research or practice.

The course presents students with a unique opportunity to broaden their knowledge about ageing and older people, their needs and the services provided for them, and skills necessary for effective health, social and voluntary work. It aims to integrate advances in knowledge about social, psychological and biological aspects of ageing, with an update and review of developments in policy and service delivery. The course provides a critical perspective on growing older and develops students’ skills and awareness of the importance of research and evaluation.

Since 2006, the MA in Gerontology has been taught in conjunction with the MSc in Geriatric Medicine for four of the six course modules. This interdisciplinarity is a key strength of the programme, with students finding the interchange of ideas and perspectives stimulating and educationally rewarding.

The course comprises six one-week modules which can be taken either full-time in one year or part-time over two years. In addition to passing these modules, Masters degree students are required to write a dissertation. Students who pass all the taught modules (120 credits) but do not complete the dissertation may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma. Dissertation

The MA in Gerontology includes the requirement to undertake a 12,000-15,000 word Research Dissertation. The dissertation offers students the opportunity to conduct a substantial piece of research on a relevant topic and to deepen their knowledge of a particular aspect of gerontology. Individual and small group sessions are used to support and problem-solve around the process of undertaking a dissertation in gerontology.

There are no formal examinations. Assessment is continuous and based upon assignments (e.g. essays, project work, presentations) and the dissertation. The pass mark for all modules is 50%.
