Dissertation

In order to graduate with an MSc Accounting and Financial Management, a dissertation needs to be completed. The dissertation is worth 60 credits and therefore represents approximately 600 hours of study. The pass mark is 50%.

Teaching & Assessment

The Course Director is responsible for running the programme and will provide the main source of support for students. The modules will be taught by delivery of lectures supplemented by tutorial classes, and where appropriate by workshops.

Within Keele Management School, our postgraduate courses include both core and optional modules, so the students can tailor the content of his/her course to more closely fit his/her interests and aspirations.

Taught modules are usually assessed by a combination of unseen two hour examination and coursework which may include essays, assignments, mini projects and tests. Taught modules are usually assessed by a combination of unseen examination and coursework which may include essays, mini projects and tests. Guidance is provided on the choice of dissertation topics and each student will be assigned a supervisor who will guide the student through to completion.

In addition to the learning activities that are part of the MSc programme curriculum, students also benefit from a range of professional training events and activities to build employability skills.

Throughout their studies at Keele, students are able to use Bloomberg Professional service for their financial market research and also hands-on practice of applying professional analytical tools and functions. Bloomberg Professional is accessible from all terminals in KMS multifunctional IT suite.

Students also gain a practical, hands-on experience of stock market trading and portfolio management by taking part in the Keele MSc student investment competition. During the competition, students make investment decisions and manage their portfolios in real time through Bloomberg professional platform which provides experience that is identical to trading in real life. Participants make investment decisions using real data, news and company reports in a very similar way as an equity analyst in the City or on Wall Street. The competition enables participants to:

- Develop Investment Strategies, which includes trading on these strategies and evaluating their effectiveness throughout the competition.

- Develop Research and Analytical Skills by researching the companies using fundamental data and using technical analysis to conclude the investment ideas. All these tools are available in Bloomberg.

- Keep abreast of the Latest Developments of the Market by engaging with current financial markets and following overall market trends, being mindful of mergers and acquisitions or earning releases of their target companies.

- Build Bloomberg Skills by using Bloomberg professional trading platform throughout the competition and utilizing many Bloomberg functions as part of research.

The course includes a number of distinctive modules e.g. the Accounting Theory module addresses the underlying principles that lead to accounting conventions; the International Finance module examines the financial management of multinational corporations in a global environment. It takes you to the frontier of modern and most effective approaches of managing financial and political risks and the techniques used to hedge foreign currency exposures by multinational corporations, as well as taking advantage of the international capital markets to raise finance. Course content

There are eight taught modules followed by a dissertation in a related area of your choice. Macroeconomic Analysis provides the background against which any analyses of business must take place.

In Economic Analysis of the Firm 1 and 2 the essential nature of the firm and its relationship to other firms is considered using modern economic theory and actual cases. Personnel Economics concerns the contractual relationships between the company and its employees.

Econometrics 1 and 2 and Business Finance and Financial Reporting Analysis provide students with the ability to assemble, analyse and interpret data and published work in the area.

Employment opportunities

The programme aims to give a basis for a career as a business analyst in a financial, industrial or government organisation. Many of our postgraduate students are developing high ranking careers in government, international organisations, business and universities.
