Stockholm is the capital city of Sweden and the most populous metropolitan area in Scandinavia. It is home to a number of universities, higher education colleges and research centres with a large student population.
With much of the city built across a network of islands, Stockholm is a striking and exciting place to live as a postgraduate student. Its attractive canals and lakes are complemented by many parks and green spaces and many surviving medieval streets and buildings. The cobbled alleyways of Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s charming Old Town, are lined with elegant and colourful buildings.
The city also offers one of the largest concentrations of museums, theatres and art galleries in the world, with the opportunity to view artefacts related to Sweden’s history as well as works by famous European painters. The Moderna Museet has one of the world’s finest collections of contemporary art, showcasing works by the likes of Picasso, Rauschenberg and Bacon. The Vasamuseet, meanwhile, is a maritime museum centred around a painstakingly reconstructed 17th-century warship that was salvaged from the bottom of Stockholm Harbour in 1961.
Stockholm’s nightlife and entertainment venues are also vibrant, while its restaurants serve food from a wide range of international cuisines.
Stockholm is one of Sweden’s most important academic hubs. The city has a strong history of research and education in medicine and the sciences, with prestigious institutions including the Karolinska Institutet (a world-leading medical school) and the Royal Institute of Technology, which is one of the largest Technological Universities in Scandinavia.
Stockholm University is the city’s largest state university, offering programmes in a wide range of subject areas. Originally founded in 1878, it is usually ranked as one of the best 200 global universities.
The Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) is also located in the city and offers highly regarded postgraduate business programmes.
Many Swedish companies have their headquarters in Stockholm, from Spotify and Ericsson to H&M and Skanska. Stockholm has an innovative, high-tech economy with a thriving start-up scene.
