St Cloud is a small city in Minnesota, around 65 miles northwest of Minneapolis. Situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, St Cloud is within easy reach of stunning nature reserves. It’s also the home of St Cloud State University, one of Minnesota’s largest public universities.
St Cloud was established as a city in 1856, taking its name from the Parisian suburb of Saint-Cloud, which was itself named for Saint Clodoald, a monk and priest who lived in France during the 6th century. St Cloud became an important granite production centre in the 19th century (hence its nickname ‘the Granite City’), as well as a significant fur trading outpost.
Modern-day St Cloud combines vibrant cosmopolitanism with the friendliness of a close-knit community. The Stearns History Museum offers a window into the region’s past and is located in a 100-acre nature park, while the Munsinger Gardens are a tranquil riverside paradise. Students at St Cloud State University can enjoy free transport on the city’s bus network.
The Beaver Islands are a group of islets located just south of St Cloud, along a two-mile stretch of the Mississippi. They offer excellent hiking and canoe opportunities for adventurous postgraduates looking to escape the city. Meanwhile, Minneapolis is only an hour away from St Cloud, making it a perfect weekend getaway if you want to sample the urban sophistication of the biggest city in the state.
There is one university in St Cloud, as well as several higher education institutions. St Cloud State University has a student population of over 14,000 and is based on a 100-acre campus between the city and the Beaver Islands. It’s a public university within the Minnesota State system and was established back in 1869.
Major business sectors in St Cloud include healthcare, financial services and education. The Greater St Cloud region is a significant agricultural producer in the United States.
