Module Details

The Professional Doctorate comprises two stages:

Stage 1 relates to the completion of a British Psychological Society accredited undergraduate degree or conversion course (conferring Graduate Basis for Chartered Status) and a British Psychological Society accredited Masters degree (conferring Stage 1 of the BPS’s Qualification in Sport and Exercise Psychology). If you have completed the requirements for Stage 1 (i.e. Stage 1 BPS QSEP), you will be compensated for this through APEL and will enter the programme at Stage 2 of the Professional Doctorate.

Stage 2 of this course contains three core units: Publication and Dissemination (30 credits), Proposal for Professional Research and Development Project and Professional Practice and Research (30 credits), and Professional Research and Development Project in Sport and Exercise Psychology (360 credits). These units are made up of component parts and are assessed through portfolio work, presentation, and viva voce examination.

Programme Assessment

You will be assigned one or more University supervisors, depending on the area of research and professional development. Access to specialist advisors in the workplace will be required for Part 2 of the programme and will vary according to the area of investigation. We have excellent support systems for our Professional Doctorate students and you will be assigned a Personal Tutor for Part 1 as well as two Supervisors for Part 2 of the course. There are further opportunities to attend research seminars and workshops organised by the University's Graduate School.

The Professional Doctorate consists of coursework and research and is credit based. The coursework component is designed to help build on professional expertise by exposing students to challenging and innovative ideas in their field.

Assessment is by coursework (including preparation of manuscripts for publication and documents for review in line with the BPS QSEP) and oral presentations. This should normally take 36 months to complete.

Students are encouraged to develop a critical appreciation of the changing demands in their field and, in doing so, they become equipped with the skills to deal with any challenges that these changes may present.

As part of the course, students are afforded the opportunity to reflect on and engage in debate about the issues and developments within their professional context. This responsive approach to professional development encourages students to explore issues as they emerge.

The course is flexible by its nature, but it lies within a solid framework. Your supervised projects will focus on areas which are relevant to you, and each has its own qualification outcome. At each stage, you will work within a carefully constructed template which provides clear guidance on structure, content and the research process.

1st Year - PG Cert - Conceptual and Theorectical Discourses
Consideration of debates and developments that constitute the terms of reference within the sport and health science environment. For example, debates relating to long term athlete development, exercise referral clinics, healthy lifestyle management, strength and conditioning, physical activity and public health policy, preparing for competition in a variety of climates, talent identification and the application of development theories to the specific disciplines within sport and health science.

2nd Year - PG Dip - Contemporary Contextual Issues.
Concern with the issuesthat define the contemporary parameters of sport and health work. For example, ways in which the public policy frame, and professionalism, informs the characteristics and priorities of sport and health science programmes and initiatives within, and across, National Governing Bodies and accrediting organisations. This will include exploring the development and implementation of policy, the role of stakeholders, professionalism, lifestyle management and evaluation in the policy process.

3rd Year - MA Masters Project - Developmental Considerations
The focus would be on a research project through primary data collection. For example direct engagement in some aspect of sport and health science leading to individual or team performance improvement, the evaluation, impact and effectiveness of exercise referral clinics on specific populations, the implementation of innovative training methods or a mono, multi- or interdisciplinary approach to athlete support.

Career Opportunities

This course is led by Lance Doggart, a sport and health sciences teacher with a particular interest in sport science support and research methods. Lance brings an extensive background in sports coaching and interdisciplinary sport science to the course.

More Information

Delivery
Delivery of the programme is based on the allocation of a project supervisor for each stage. This supervisor will have expertise in the chosen area and will provide guidance throughout the process. Where appropriate, a second supervisor will also be involved. In addition to project supervision, research workshops will be offered during the course of the year, when students will be brought together to explore particular research themes. Electronic resources will be available to support each stage and additional tutorial support will be made available as appropriate. It is anticipated that one of the projects undertaken will lead to a joint publication (supervisor and student).

Assessment
While assessment of each stage of the programme will be based on the grade awarded for the completed project, formative assessment will also be provided at two points during the year in order to provide students with an indication of their progress.

Our MSc Sport and Exercise Psychology degree further develops and utilises the skills and techniques required to be a practitioner in sport and/or exercise psychology. The programme provides opportunities to experience the practical nature of being a sport and exercise psychologist, reflecting the requirements for the British Psychological Society (BPS) stage 1 (BPS approval of the curriculum is subject to confirmation) and the British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences (BASES) supervised experience. In addition the degree will explore contemporary issues and challenges within sport and exercise psychology encompassed by a framework of intervention.

One of the standout features is the applied professional practice module. This module enables the student to engage in a work based learning environment to practice, develop and reflect upon the application of the appropriate skill set, and it’s development, within sport and exercise psychology. This feature will also be attractive to students who are already in employment which will allow them to combine work and study. Module Details

This is a part-time course, which has been specifically designed so that it can be available to sport, exercise and health professionals from all over the country, to fit with the demands of full-time employment. The course structure is only offered in a part-time mode and is divided into two parts:

Part 1

This is the taught component of the programme, which will equip you with the skills you will need in preparation for Part 2. Part 1 consists of four units:

Professional Review and Development
Advanced Research Techniques
Publication and Dissemination
Proposal for Professional Research and Development
Attendance for Part 1 will be in six study blocks of three days duration spread over two academic years. Typically, you will be required to attend the University for up to 18 days for the whole of Part 1.

Part 2

This is the research and professional development component. It comprises one or two pieces of practice-based research, linked with a commentary demonstrating the relevance of the research to both practice and the practitioner. The nature of this study may include pure basic research or applied research related, for example, to a management or educational setting. This should normally take between 24 and 48 months to complete. Attendance for Part 2 will only be required for tutorials, seminars and oral presentations.

Assessment will be by a thesis, an oral presentation and a viva voce examination.

The University offers Accreditation for Prior Learning (APL), for applicants with previous learning experience and other academic achievement, which could be taken into account for some of the units of study. Claims will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

This Masters is available as both a full time course and as a two year part time course.

The course will equip you with strong team working skills through its interdisciplinary approach to training. You’ll be equipped to work in teams of professionals with complimentary expertise such as strength and conditioning, team coaches, physiotherapists and acute injury settings.

Learning and teaching

Attendance is compulsory and will be approximately one and a half days a month (you will not be expected to be in every week). Recorded lectures of shared modules with other courses will be available to be viewed online, along with specified eLearning material.

Seminars will be recorded, where appropriate. Some practical sessions, group tutorials and specific teaching sessions will be compulsory.

Placements at appropriate professional clubs and NHS clinics will be organised, with some flexibility to negotiate clinic dates and times, and contacts will be provided for self-organised additional experience opportunities. Predominantly we use a case based approach; the eLearning each week will have a relevant case or scenario identified, and required reading and practical tasks set.

Assessment

There will be a variety of assessments, appropriate for vocational character of the course and the nature of the subjects studied. These will include

The aim of this course is to facilitate the continuing development of sports coaching professionals and to enhance their knowledge and skills appropriate to the management and control of the diverse components within the field of sports coaching, commensurate with the requirements of the profession, their employers, associated professional bodies and community, commercial and industrial interests. The MSc is offered in both full- and part-time modes. Students will complete 180 credit points for the award of MSc, with the option to exit after completing 120 credits for the award of Postgraduate Diploma. Full-Time students will take 60 credits in each of the three semesters, while the part-time students will take 30 credits in each semester of years one and two and 60 credits in year three. There are six taught modules on the course, all of which are compulsory. Three of the programme modules are 30 credits points whilst the Research Project Preparation and Professional Development are 15 credit point modules and the dissertation is 60 credits (the dissertation is not necessary for those who choose to exit with the PgDip). Students wishing to graduate with a PGCert will study 60 credits which is offered in semester 1 of the programme. All modules are compulsory, with students being offered the opportunity to choose what aspect of coaching and specific sport they will write about for their assessments. The Dissertation module also provides students with a choice of topic.

- Teaching and learning assessment -
The course aims to deliver a range of learning experiences enabling students to
develop their knowledge and skills (at Level 7) and support the development of Graduate
Qualities. The primary aim is to encourage students to become active and motivated learners, to question and critically analyse subject material and make specific reference to the role of sports coaching in addressing change in a sports coaching environment. Successful students will employ scientific theories, concepts and empirical knowledge in their practice. Creativity is defined here in its broadest sense to include critically informed approaches to existing issues in sports coaching, as well as innovative ways of delivering and evaluating practices to enhance the learning of all involved. Thus, it has direct relevance for the development and enhancement of professional and practical skills.

The climate for developing sport and coaching in Northern Ireland and the UK has never been more positive. With major international events being hosted here, coach education and development have become a major focus for policy and funding decisions by Governmental Departments. The establishment of the UKCC across four levels and different coaching contexts being developed, this has provided an opportunity to modernise existing coach qualification and learning programmes.

The Professional Development (Coaching Science) programme is designed to allow coaches from all sporting environments to develop their practice and professional network by completing a range of portfolio projects negotiated in partnership with personal tutors from Hartpury College’s HE Sport department. Portfolio projects can be completed by individuals or may form a component of a group effort with coaches working together to investigate an aspect of personal practice before creating an output, such as a report or presentation, that can be published to the wider coaching community. These portfolios can therefore focus on part of the learner’s current workplace responsibilities or be used to plan future ventures directly linked to the coach’s environment and career progression plans.

This innovative approach to postgraduate study allows coaches to focus their research on a number of possible coaching contexts including teaching, coach education and supporting high performance athletes, and therefore to design their own powerful professional development experiences. Core coaching modules are studied alongside students completing the MSc Coaching Science programme, allowing valuable sharing of perspectives and resources across and amongst two related courses that each have individual development needs and group collaboration as their key concern.

All students complete three core modules that focus on the craft of coaching practice, and related areas of concern such as coach philosophy, language, behaviour and planning. Whilst involved in these key debates coaches will also be developing a personal learning plan via an appreciation of reflective practice. These experiences are collated in a Professional Development Portfolio with discussions amongst learning peers and with personal tutors central to this course component. Upon completion of the programme’s core modules students qualify for a Postgraduate Certificate and may choose to continue their studies via focused research into a single coaching context (perhaps due to it mirroring their current workplace or career aspirations) or through study of a broader range of topics, each negotiated by themselves and their tutor. Completion of this phase of the programme sees students eligible for a Postgraduate Diploma and able to carry out an extended final project that once successfully completed results in the award of a Master’s degree.

Module delivery will be supported by a range of student-centred approaches (e.g. distance learning and practice-based activities) and will include peer learning sets which could be face-to-face and/or supported electronically. The programme design team is committed to adult learning approaches that include the development of learning contracts and critical and independent enquiry for the coaching practice-based elements. Assessment methods reflect adult learning principles also, allowing students to shape and develop academic work that focuses on current coaching practice and personal development. Students will benefit from an enhanced learning experience by engaging in a variety of creative teaching mediums such as mentorship, peer modelling, reflective discussion, video observation feedback and experiments in practice.

The programme can be completed full time in one year; part time routes are available and should be planned with the Programme Manager.

Course details

You will be encouraged to develop your own programme of study by selecting topics within modules that have particular relevance to your professional, academic and personal goals. The programme is designed to allow you to focus on your particular discipline interest(s). You will be required to attend University one day per week (Monday) in semesters 1 and 2. Attendance in semester 3 is more flexible and is negotiated between you and your research project supervisor.

What you study

Teaching is informed and underpinned by current research, which can be categorised broadly into five groups: exercise physiology, biomechanics, psychology, strength and conditioning, and sociology of sport.
