Masters Degrees in Sport & Exercise Science study the working of the human body when faced with challenging athletic scenarios and other intensive physical demands. These programs will give you the opportunity to learn how different parts of the body respond to exercise, along with techniques for preventing injury and achieving optimum performance through training.
Programmes may be taught courses focussing on appropriate scientific theory, or include more extensive research tasks and research projects. Entry requirements will vary, but will usually include a relevant first degree in an appropriate science or physical education subject.
These degrees are usually professionally orientated, designed for postgraduates seeking work in appropriate industries.
A Masters in Sports Science won't normally lead to a career as an athlete yourself, but you could take on an important role with a sports team or as part of the coaching staff employed to support an individual competitor. Opportunities exist to work with famous names in high profile roles that can sometimes be as challenging as the sports they support.
However, many Sports Scientists also work to support smaller teams or amateur competitors: helping ensure that as many people as possible can take part in sports and athletics safely and effectively. You could work with a local gym or leisure centre, or be employed to teach and train students at a school or college.
