Paediatric physiotherapy involves the treatment of both acute and chronic conditions occurring in infancy that disturb the development of motor skills and limit the potential for functional independence in adulthood. Paediatric physiotherapy is a specialty field of physiotherapy that requires specific knowledge, training and interest.

This sub-field represents a clinical science in a constant process of ongoing change and development. Scientific discoveries yielded by recent studies in neuroscience and the study of movement have recently brought radical changes and modern updates to the practise of physiotherapy. This non-stop development means that professionals must be ready and willing to constantly enhance their skills and incorporate new findings into their practice.

Knowledge in psychomotor development, movement education and control and adaptations to growth are some of the aspects that help paediatric physiotherapists design effective therapeutic strategies and help the child’s motor skills reach their full potential.

This postgraduate course is designed to provide specialised training to physiotherapists dedicated to working in paediatrics, infant development, early assessment, special education and orthopaedic paediatrics.

The Masters Programme in Physiotherapy and Scientific Evidence at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya is based on the premise that, from a scientific standpoint, in order to provide personalised and high-quality services, the physiotherapist must be able to interpret the scientific data that engenders new perspectives on intervention and research. Physiotherapists must also be able to correctly apply different scientific methodologies to the knowledge-building process.

Similarly, to appropriately respond to the growing demand for effectiveness and efficiency in health services, physiotherapists need to not only apply scientific findings to professional practice, but also intervene actively and productively in the various stages of scientific research and related endeavours.

Growing public awareness of the numerous health benefits of physical activity is making sport ever more popular and widely practised. More and more frequently, doctors are prescribing physical exercise as a basic treatment for improving health and overall quality of life. Because physiotherapists focus directly on the benefits of physical activity, they need to know the fundamental principles of training for and practicing specific athletic activities, as well as how to evaluate their patients’ basic and medical status. The UIC postgraduate course provides essential knowledge and training for physiotherapists interested in working with athletes and all those who engage in physical activity.

Interest in competition sports has also increased substantially in recent years. The road to high-performance is a long and trying one, and must come as the result of both athletic talent and arduous training that often goes on for years. It is crucial for physiotherapists who work in this area to know the limits of this strenuous training in order to consider its potential impacts on the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of stress after recovering from injury.

The muscles in general and the trigger points in particular are the main sources of pain and joint dysfunction. Virtually anyone can suffer at some stage in their life from persistentmyofascial pain as a result of an external trigger (traumatism, stress, cold, etc.).

Myofascial pain comprises a series of sensory, motor and localised signs and symptoms caused by the myofascial trigger points which often manifest themselves in areas other than the trigger point responsible for the dysfunction.

A considerable part of chronic pain caused by the myofascial trigger points can be prevented through early diagnosis and the appropriate treatment. As health professionals who work on a daily basis with interpreting and treating pain, physiotherapists must learn to identify and train in the therapeutic discipline of myofascial pain.

This postgraduate degree gives physiotherapists the necessary training to apply dry needling and enables them to register as physiotherapists trained in this practice, something which is necessary to obtain Civil Liability insurance coverage, as stipulated by the school resolution 007/2009 of 6 October by the College of Physiotherapists of Catalonia (Col·legi de Fisioterapeutes de Catalunya).
