The URV-UOC online Master's Degree in Computer Engineering and Mathematics (ECiM) offers interdisciplinary training in the areas of engineering and applied sciences. The ECiM programme includes cutting-edge topics such as computer modelling and simulation, numerical methods, parallel and distributed computing, knowledge representation, networks and graphs, and applied optimisation. The aim of the degree is to prepare students for R&D positions in industry, research centres and universities. It is intended for graduates with various scientific and technical qualifications (computer engineering, mathematics, telecommunications engineering, industrial engineering, statistics, physics, etc.).

Students must complete a total of 60 ECTS credits, distributed as follows: 17 for compulsory subjects, 25 for optional subjects and 18 for the master's thesis. The ECiM is designed to be completed in one year (full-time students) or two years (part-time students). As the programme’s lecturers are active researchers in the fields they teach, they can help students to initiate research careers in computer engineering and mathematics.

Program Brief

The LCT program is an international distributed Master program. It is designed to meet the demands of industry and research in the rapidly growing field of Language Technology. Research and innovation in Language Technology is vital for many of the smart applications that are pervasive in modern daily life, such as virtual assistants, automatic translation services, search engines, voice-driven technology, social media analytics etc. Language Technology (also known as Computational Linguistics or Natural Language Processing) is an interdisciplinary field at the intersection of Linguistics, Computer Science and Mathematics (logic, probability theory, formal language theory, statistics). Hence, students in this program choose appropriate combinations of modules in Language Technology, Computational and Theoretical Linguistics, and Computer Science. Moreover, the students are able to acquire practice-oriented knowledge through our strong and continuous links with industry through internships, joint industry-academia supervisions, and the like.

Mobility

The program involves studying one year each at two different European partner universities. Optionally, a stay at one of the non-european partners for some months is possible, as well as an internship at any of our industrial partners. After completing all study requirements, the students obtain two Master degrees: one from each of the two European universities where they studied.

 

Study program

The course consists of compulsory core modules, as well as elective advanced modules in Language Technology and Computer Science, possibly complemented by an internship project, and completed by a Master Thesis.

 

History

The LCT Masters program has been successfully implemented since 2006, being funding by the Erasmus Mundus Programme from 2007 to 2011 and from 2013 to 2017. In 2012 the LCT Program operated as an Erasmus Mundus Brand Name. Intake 2018: the program commits to respecting the Erasmus Mundus requirements and to maintain the high quality of the implementation during the years of funding.

Course Structure

The master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences is designed to provide outstanding students with the skills and abilities needed to thrive in an increasingly multidisciplinary contemporary research environment.
A key feature of the program is in-depth hands-on research training in multiple fields. Students undertake a 6-month major project, and a 10-week minor project in two different research disciplines in leading research institutions from the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences (DCEXS). Students are provided with extensive training in professional research skill, and engage directly with and learn from outstanding local and international researchers.

The program is aimed at candidates who intend to undertake a PhD or pursue a research career in fundamental science and technology. The program is open to candidates who hold a degree in health sciences, engineering, computer sciences or degrees in basic scientific disciplines (chemistry, physics, biology, or mathematics).
Through the program, students will acquire the following skills:
• basic skills and knowledge needed to carry out advanced and interdisciplinary research projects in one or more of the fields of research
• the ability to acquire, in an independent manner, the knowledge and the practical skills currently necessary to respond to the demands of an open and complex environment which is based on knowledge
• the ability to work effectively on complex research projects in a multidisciplinary environment

Program description

The digital revolution brings with it an explosion of data that carries significant potential value for businesses, science, and society.

As data becomes easily available as never before, so too does its volume grow, and extracting useful quantitative insights becomes more and more challenging. 

The Barcelona GSE Master in Data Science prepares its graduates to design and build data-driven systems for decision-making in the private or public sector, offering a thorough training in predictive, descriptive, and prescriptive analytics.

The curriculum will guide students from modeling and theory to computational practice and cutting edge tools, teaching skills that are in growing global demand. 

Data Science students will be armed with a solid knowledge of statistical and machine learning methods, optimization and computing, and the ability to spot, assess, and seize the opportunity of data-driven value creation.

Students will learn how to apply classroom examples using real data and answering concrete business questions from the perspectives of different industries. Degree

The degree requires the successful completion of 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits of graduate courses (6 credits are equivalent to a 40 hour course), some compulsory and some elective. The students' final program must be discussed with and approved by the Master Director.

The MSc in Business Research is a one-year programme which provides students with advanced training in the research skills, techniques and methodologies to conduct their own research in business. The programme can also be taken part-time over two years.
Students who successfully complete the master will have developed the knowledge and skills to begin the preparation of a doctoral thesis and may therefore request admission to the PhD in Business. Attainment of the MSc degree also prepares students for careers in research and policymaking in the public and private sectors. You must note, however, that it is a research-oriented programme and not a professional MBA.
The programme attracts students from around the world. A typical class profile has a percentage of international student of over 60%. As the master is taught in Spanish (55%) and English (45%), a good command of both languages is needed.
The MSc in Business Research offers international research excellence in business administration and management. It also provides the means for students to develop skills and abilities in research that meet the highest standards. Students are exposed to a rich training curriculum as well as a wide offering of master classes, research seminars, workshops and conferences. Given its research orientation, the master degree requires a teaching model that combines a practical approach with master classes, which provide the conceptual foundations of business research. Lessons in the computer room are essential in order to master statistical techniques and databases.

Career Opportunities

Students who successfully complete the master will have developed the knowledge and skills to begin a doctoral thesis and may therefore request admission to the PhD in Business. This is one of the most popular career choices for MSc in Business Research graduates. In fact, the master is intended to serve as a foundation for doctoral research, which in turn constitutes the first step towards an academic career.
Not all students decide to follow this route, though. Some prefer to make the transition to the labour market straight after finishing their master degree and others wait until they have completed their doctorate.
