Oral health in newborns, children and adolescents affects the general health of both the current child population and the future adult population. The availability of dentists specialising in the prevention and resolution of the most common oral problems in the paediatric population is therefore essential. The Universitat Internacional de Catalunya trains dentists and stomatologists with a clear objective: to allow them to specialise in the diagnosis, prevention and resolution of the most common oral problems in the paediatric population by way of theoretical and practical training.

During the Dentistry Degree, students study Medical/Surgical Buccal Pathology, which is intended to provide future dentists with a basic understanding of surgery which, in many cases, is not used in professional practice for various reasons: lack of practice, loss of this understanding, uncertainty when faced with surgical situations, lack of interest in surgical aspects of the profession, etc.

Once the degree has been completed, this basic understanding may not be sufficient for the dentist to confidently deal with surgical situations, and this understanding may be lost with time if not applied. As such, the aim of this course is to strengthen and broaden this surgical knowledge in recent graduates as far as possible in order to help them deal with such situations in the safest and most confident manner possible. In order to be able to practice correctly, dentists require a comprehensive clinical and surgical understanding of the field of dentistry that allows them to assess and solve any type of surgical situation themselves.

This programme lasts for one academic year (40 weeks), during which students will acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The theoretical part of the course will mainly involve literature reviews and the presentation of clinical cases. The dental industry will play a key role in the course, allowing students to get to know implants from leading commercial suppliers. Perhaps the most important part of this residency is the chance to apply all the theoretical knowledge acquired in the Clínica Universitaria, with students performing comprehensive treatment planning and care in patients. Students are expected to study for at least 4 hours per week in addition to the time spent at the university.

Many patients who go to the dental surgery to receive dental treatment are of an advanced age, with systemic illnesses which require accurate knowledge of them and their implications and interactions in the field of dentistry, or with cardiovascular, immunological, endocrinal and metabolic pathologies, which the dentist must understand to provide treatment correctly, in a manner that is safe to both patient and dentist. Likewise, those with any type of disability present complex challenges that are difficult for dentists to resolve. In addition to this is the appearance of secondary oral lesions as a result of taking certain medications or interactions between them, or as oral manifestations of underlying systemic diseases. All of these are considered special patients.

Recent advances in communication technologies mean that long-distance communication is now possible with an ease that was unthinkable only a few years ago. The use of such technologies therefore means that the majority of training activities in a postgraduate course can be performed remotely with no need for direct physical contact.

As a result, the main benefit of this course is that it provides access to high-level postgraduate training for those people who are unable to physically relocate to another university for two years, thereby allowing students to maintain family and/or work-related bonds while giving them the opportunity to invest the time and dedication required to achieve the training objectives proposed by this course.
