IAAC Barcelona offers the 17th edition of the first and oldest Master in Advanced Architecture worldwide. Oriented to architects, engineers and designers from all over the world eager to imagine the future of our cities and societies and committed to build it in the present.

The Master in Advanced Architecture program emerges as an innovative open-structure program focusing on three select Research Lines (Intelligent Cities, Self-sufficient Buildings, Digital Matter-Intelligent Construction) all led by internationally renowned experts, and bringing together students and faculty from different disciplines and origins, towards the creation of a networked hub of excellence, IAAC Community, dedicated to research and innovation for the habitability of the 21st Century.

The Master in Advanced Architecture is accredited by the Universidad Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) with respectively 75 ECTS and 130 ECTS. The MAA is directed by the architect and researcher Areti Markopoulou.

Course Structure

The Master in Advanced Architecture is articulated in three different programs: MAA01, MAA01+OTF and MAA02. During the first year (October 2017 – June 2018) the students enrolled in the programs will work together in a common educational platform, with a common organization and academic structure. After the completion of MAA01, students enrolled in MAA01+OTF or MAA02 will follow two different organizations and academic structures.

MAA02 combines the first year Master with a second year of investigation to develop a thesis project. During this second year students are required to deal with a project counting on the possibility to develop it with international faculty and enterprises, highly specialized in different fields. MAA+OTF combines MAA01 with a postgraduate program called Open Thesis Fabrication (OTF), which is an intensive applied research program that combines Academy and Industry. Nowadays its focus is on pylos projects and self sufficiency. There is also the possibility to extend the master in two years, during this second year the aim is to focus on your own thesis project. Student Profile

Candidates for the Master in Advanced Architecture are architects, engineers and designers from all over the World curious about how the world is changing and committed to drive this change.Therefore the program is oriented at graduates who wish to commit and develop their design research skills in the context of new forms of practice within architecture and urbanism, ranging from large-scale environments to tectonic details and material properties.

Once successfully finished the master, IAAC students will join the IAAC Alumni Community. This is today is an active and dynamic network of visionary professionals distributed around the world, promoting principles and applications of Advanced Architecture, exploring new academic and research initiatives, leading award winning practices or working for internationally acclaimed firms and institutions.

The Master in Advanced Interaction (MAI) is a unique opportunity for Designers, Visual and Performing Artists, Choreographers, Dancers, Architects, Interaction Designers, VJs and DJs, Sound Artists, Scenographers, and profiles from related backgrounds to explore creative uses of technology for experimental and practical purposes. The course is aimed at developing and exhibiting projects which define meaningful interaction through novel technological solutions, performances and installations. The ambition of these projects go well beyond digital media and are communicated through software and hardware development, solid theoretical foundations, and prototypes completed in IaaC’s digital fabrication laboratory. The theoretical basis of the course is to question how current technology can augment the agency and impact of all kinds of interactions around us. The Master in Advanced Interaction is organized around three terms, each including a Research Studio and a series of Seminars and related events.The Research Studios are the main part of the program: they focus on building technical, aesthetic and conceptual skills by working on real-life situations. Seminar sessions are designed to transmit specific domains of knowledge from relevant experts involved in practice and academia.Throughout the academic year we invite artists and practitioners in interaction arts and related fields to talk about their work. While the primary activities of the course are in Barcelona, Spain, we look to international events to form part of our discourse and inspiration.

In the framework of widening the possibilities of research and production in IAAC, and the further implementation of our platform of development between academy and the real-world application, research and the industry, focusing and developing the potentiality towards a marketable product, IAAC proposes the next steps in its field of applied research from Open Thesis fabrication to IAAC BUILDs – building innovation, design & logistics.

AIM AND GOAL

The aim of the program, in line with the opportunity of making a difference, is to develop research to be applied through patents or products for marketing. This will be obtained through the common goal of researching of different fabrication techniques, materials and form, towards the implementation of a large-scale prototype, understanding the potentials of digital fabrication together with new needs of current society and the market.

FORMAT

All the IAAC BUILDs researchers will be working together in 1 group towards a collective goal and project, in turn subdivided into different specialized research teams each focusing on a specific aspect of the project’s development. Hence the implementation of a 1:1 scale prototype allowing to test techniques and materials on real scale.

IAAC gives students the opportunity to  create individual Studio agendas and develop Pilot Thesis Projects based on Citizen Innovation, Cities New Business Models, Urban Apps, Smart City Infrastructures, new Citizen-based Services, Open Data Development and more. In this way, IAAC puts together an experimental and learning environment for the training of professionals with both theoretical and practical responses to the increasing complexity of contemporary urban environments. Students have the opportunity to be part of a highly international group, including faculty members, researchers and lecturers, in which they are encouraged to develop collective decision-making processes and materialise their project ideas. The aim of the IAAC is to form graduates who, after the completion of the programme, will be able to develop their acquired skills in a diversity of professional environments, related with the transformation and management of cities and technologies of information.
