We've been helping students find the right postgraduate course for over a decade.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences provides both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Mathematics. Studies are broad based with an emphasis on the application of mathematics in areas such as finance, statistics and operational research.
The Department regularly tops the league tables for UK University Mathematics Departments in student satisfaction with our teaching. We provide a friendly and supportive environment for our students using a mix of active personal tutoring and innovative projects such as our Maths Arcade where students and staff meet informally to play competitive strategy games and discuss mathematical problems. The department’s teaching is highly regarded: its staff include a National Teaching Fellow, two University Teaching Fellows and a recent winner of the Times Higher Education Innovative Teacher of the Year Award.
The Department has highly rated research at an international level with prize-winning research groups in areas such as the computer modelling of pedestrian evacuation, and multi-physics modelling of a variety of industrial applications. Our Fire Safety Engineering Group won the 2014 Guardian University Award for Research Impact. Statistics and Operational Research is a key research area for Department staff as well as areas such as numerical mathematics, computational finance, and the teaching of Mathematics in Higher Education. This activity feeds in distinctive research based content into our postgraduate degrees – the MSc in Applicable Mathematics and the MSc in Computational Finance – providing a route into further research or into professional careers using mathematics.
