St. Gallen is a traditional city in northern Switzerland, with a modern atmosphere and youthful population. It is the location of the University of St. Gallen, an internationally renowned business school.
St. Gallen is a picturesque city, celebrated for its timbered houses with colourful painted oriel windows and turrets, and cobblestone streets and squares.
The city has around 80,000 inhabitants and is a short drive from Lake Constance. St. Gallen is in the German-speaking part of Switzerland close to the borders with Germany, Austria and Lichtenstein.
Its most famous attraction is the Abbey Cathedral of St. Gall – an 8th century baroque abbey and UNESCO world heritage site. Its library is one of the world’s oldest and finest with many leather-bound books and manuscripts, as well as Rococo-style decoration and frescos.
The Old Town district offers an ideal place to relax and take a break from your Masters, with narrow, pleasant and traffic-free streets featuring plenty shops, restaurants and cafés. The city also has lots of theatres and museums popular with the local population (among one of the youngest populations in Switzerland).
St Gallen is home to the University of St. Gallen (HSG), which specialises in Business, Economics, Law and Political / Social Science. Postgraduate programmes are taught in German and or English. The HSG campus is a 15-minute walk from the town centre with excellent views of its attractive buildings and monuments. The university has many associated research institutes, managed as private businesses, where junior researchers are trained. HSG also has a strong international outlook, supporting people from over 80 countries and a high proportion of foreign students.
Like Switzerland as a whole, St Gallen has a productive economy based on highly skilled workers (and graduates!). Important Swiss industries include microtechnology, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and banking and insurance. The city itself is known for its textiles – at the start of the 20th century half of the world’s embroidery was produced in St. Gallen(!) and the town remains an internationally renowned hub for the fashion industry.
