This three-year full-time programme of advanced professional training in educational psychology is recognised by the British Psychological Society and the Department for Children, Schools and Families. As a trainee you will be placed with Educational Psychological Services for supervised practical experience.

The programme

All of the professional training courses in the UK meet the standards for Educational and Training of the Health Professions Council and the Programme Standards of the British Psychological Society, yet they are all different in the way that they meet those standards.

This programme prepares trainees for work as clinical psychologists in the National Health Service (NHS). The programme is regulated by the Health Professions Council (HPC) and is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). On successful completion of the course trainees will be able to apply for registration as a Practitioner Psychologist with the HPC in order to practice. In addition successful completion of the three-year programme confers eligibility for chartered clinical psychologist status with the BPS. Those who join the programme are registered as University postgraduate research students and trainee psychologists, working with an NHS contract in the South West of England.

The Exeter DClinPsy programme is based on a reflective scientist practitioner model. As such, it draws on the research/evidence-base to inform clinical activities. This approach is reflected in each of the three modules. The critical role of research evidence as a unifying perspective for research experiences and clinical activities is viewed as a fundamental aspect of the programme. This integration is achieved through course work, research and clinical activities and the latter two experiences are achieved by close working relationships with selected faculty members. This "learning by doing" approach benefits students by continuously involving them in active research projects as well as supervised clinical practice.

Our aim is to produce graduates who will make a meaningful contribution to service users, the services themselves and the profession of clinical psychology. Programme structure

The programme consists of clinical, academic and research modules which span the three years.

Clinical module

Core competencies are developed through two year long placements with a final year placement to consolidate your previous learning and specialisation. The emphasis in year one will be on understanding and working with people in context and in year two on integrating psychological therapies in clinical practice.

You will work with a lead supervisor and one or more supplementary supervisors in each placement to gather the necessary range and depth of clinical experience. You are also supported by a clinical tutor who will assist with the development and negotiation of supervisory relationships and help ensure that placements meet your learning needs.

Academic module

Our unique hybrid model of problem based learning includes lectures provided by a combination of local clinicians and national leaders in their field. In the first two years the academic programme is integrated with the placement structure. Following an initial six-week teaching block at the University, teaching is then integrated with the placements involving some University based and some locally based input during term time. A generous allocation of study time is given. In year three lectures take the form of optional workshops in collaboration with our partner institutions at Plymouth and Bristol.

Research module

Through this module you are encouraged to become a research practitioner and critical consumer of clinically relevant research. The module assumes a good undergraduate grounding in statistics and research methods, but you are encouraged to develop your critical and analytic skills and deepen your understanding of both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. In year three you are allocated a research block of approximately six weeks in which to pursue a major research project and some additional time for private study.

Our MSc Animal Behaviour is unusual in that it is offered within a Psychology department. This benefits you by providing a strong background in a broad cross-section of research methods used by researchers studying human and animal behaviour, a strong training in statistical methods and multidisciplinary study environment. You will learn how to formulate and test relevant research questions, and critically evaluate the research carried out by others in the field.

The programme will give you an insight into the varied means of performing animal behaviour research in a wide array of locations with wild and (semi-)captive animals – in the wild, laboratory, zoo or under human management. As part of the taught component you will be exposed to lectures and seminar discussions, research talks and discussions with speakers, boost and consolidate your knowledge and skills in statistical data analysis, participate in a one-week residential field course (during the Easter break) and in research skill training sessions. During the course you will continuously develop your abilities in critical analysis of the literature and of scientific evidence, project development, communication and scientific writing.

Our MSc Economics programmes are intended to deepen your knowledge and understanding of economics as an academic discipline. Each programme draws upon the internationally rated research undertaken within the department and the experience of our academics in developing economic policy at organisations such as the Bank of England, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the United Nations.

A central objective of all of the programmes is to provide you with insight into the latest thinking in economics. You will attend a series of research seminars, during which you can discuss and present current research papers. Our MSc Behavioural Economics and Finance combines the intellectual rigour of a standard MSc in Economics with the insights stemming from the intersection of economics, social psychology and cognition.

This programme provides the quantitative training of standard microeconomics, with a thorough grounding in the research methodology behind experimental economics, whether applied to laboratory studies, or to field experiments. It also provides the statistical training required to analyse and interpret data from experiments.

We offer Postgraduate training programmes in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches at Certificate, Diploma and Masters level. These are aimed at developing competence in established evidence-based applications, especially for the prevention of relapse in recurrent major depression, but also for clients in a range of different settings including physical and mental healthcare and education.

Within mental health settings Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) as a treatment for preventing relapse from depression is becoming increasingly adopted. The use of mindfulness-based treatments for other conditions and in a wider range of settings outside of healthcare is also on the increase. In this programme you will develop a foundational base of the theory and research surrounding MBCT and other Mindfulness-based Approaches (MBA). You will have considerable opportunity for developing and reflecting on a personal mindfulness practice. This foundation lays the basis for continuing on to the Postgraduate Diploma year.

Train with experts

Each of our postgraduate training programmes in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches maintain an in depth focus on the underpinning theory and research, enhanced by the work carried out in the Mood Disorders Centre (http://www.exeter.ac.uk/mooddisorders/ ) ; a partnership between the University of Exeter and the National Health Service. The Centre has been offering MBCT as part of its clinical services since 2002. This programme aims to update you with the latest research and theory in MBCT/MBA particularly drawing on the work within the Mood Disorders Centre at the University of Exeter. In this programme we aim to detail the knowledge underpinning MBCT/MBA from a psychological and Buddhist perspective.

We aim to provide you with the experiential knowledge of a personal mindfulness practice and how this is fundamental to teaching MBCT/MBA. Although this year does not give you the necessary skills to begin to teach MBCT/MBA there will be opportunities to begin to lead some practices in a supportive learning environment preparing you for the Diploma.

PGCDip Psychological Therapies Practice

The PGDip Psychological Therapies Practice (Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapies and Approaches) programme has been developed to further equip you with the knowledge and skills in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-based Approaches (MBA).This programme particularly focuses on the skills required to be ready and competent to teach MBCT/MBA classes for clients. You will also be supported in a safe environment teaching to peers before moving to placements to begin to teach in real world settings under the supervision and guidance of an experienced MBCT/MBA teacher.

The PGDip programme aims to develop your readiness to offer MBCT/MBA to people in a setting specific to your professional orientation. You will develop competence in established evidence-based applications of MBCT/MBA assessed by using the Mindfulness-based Interventions - Teaching Assessment Criteria.

The PGDip programme

is aimed at clinical psychologists, psychotherapists and other professionals with experience of delivering mental health such as nurses and counsellors. It provides intensive skills training in accordance with British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies (BABCP) guidelines for good practice.

High intensity therapists assess and treat primary care patients with common mental health problems (principally anxiety and depression) using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). CBT is recommended in the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines as part of the stepped-care approach. The approach works to alleviate symptoms and have a positive impact on social inclusion, employment and productivity. Practitioners will work closely with other agencies to assess and maximise employment opportunities for each client.

The programme prepares you to provide high-intensity CBT within Improving Access to Psychological Therapies services. It adheres to the national curriculum published by the Department of Health (2008). The School maintains a firm commitment to evidence-based clinical practice and as such we endeavour to ensure all of our training programmes are firmly embedded within current research.

Aims of the programme

The programme will have a cognitive-behavioural theoretical base with preference for approaches with the soundest evidence and where cognitive and behavioural techniques are integrated in therapy and fully compliant with High Intensity IAPT curriculum. In addition to providing practical intensive and detailed skills training to facilitate skill development to a defined standard of competency, the programme will aim to increase your knowledge base of therapy and research in CBT and to promote a critical approach to the subject. It will aim to equip you to become a skilled and creative independent High Intensity therapist, in accordance with BABCP guidelines for good practice and to contribute to the further development of CBT.

The programme will provide opportunities for you to develop and demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills in the following areas:

1. To develop practical competency in Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy for common psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety
2. To develop critical knowledge of the theoretical and research literature relating to CBT

The MSc Programme

has been developed to enable you extend the PGDip, undertaken as part of the UK Department of Health’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (High Intensity) Programme, into a MSc by undertaking a piece of empirical research. The research dissertation will allow you to follow your research interests in a topic related to high intensity CBT or a project related to a service-based development need in this area. Supervision is provided by a clinical/psychological therapies researcher with provision available to support project supervision over the telephone or through internet-based software applications to improve access to the programme.

This new and distinctive MRes aims to develop a systematic understanding and critical appreciation of alternative approaches, methodologies and paradigms of social science research. It will develop fully trained and competent social science researchers, who are able to understand and use research techniques appropriate to their subject area as well as being conversant with approaches used by other social scientists.

The programme has a substantial theoretical and quantitative core but also delivers complementary qualitative training. This will provide an essential foundation for any working researcher, whether they are going on to do a PhD or otherwise engaged in research. The training will enable students to think through how they can use their knowledge and skills of advanced quantitative methods in different contexts and apply them to a variety of problems; and, progressively, to identify their own needs for training.

It is a joint initiative between the Universities of Bath, Bristol and Exeter. The course is delivered collaboratively; each semester one core unit is taught intensively, with time spent at each location. This collaborative delivery means that the expertise of academics at each institution can be made available to students from all three universities, enhancing the training capacity of each.

The Postgraduate Diploma

You will complete all the requirements of the CYP IAPT national curriculum through university-based workshops, clinical supervision groups and tutorials. You will also be supported to undertake supervised clinical practice with children, young people and their parents. On successful completion of the programme you may be eligible to apply for accreditation of your therapy practice by the appropriate Professional Standards or Regulatory Body, subject to additional requirements as necessary (eg. British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy).

In this programme we aim to help you develop your practice in evidence-based psychological therapies for children, young people and families. You will develop the knowledge and competencies required to be an effective practitioner, as determined by the relevant national curriculum for the CYP IAPT Programme. We aim to provide you with a high quality and stimulating learning experience in a supportive environment that is enriched by an internationally recognised research environment, nationally recognised innovative clinical teaching approaches and current clinical practice.

The MSc

The MSc programme (http://cedar.exeter.ac.uk/programmes/mscptprcypf/) has been developed to enable you extend the PGDip programme, into a MSc by undertaking a piece of empirical research. The research dissertation will allow you to follow your research interests in a topic related to children, young people and/or family mental health or a project related to a service-based development need in this area. Supervision is provided by a clinical/psychological therapies researcher with provision available to support project supervision over the telephone or through internet-based software applications to improve access to the programme.

In this programme we aim to help you consolidate your previous training as an effective and evidence-based practitioner in evidence-based psychological therapies for children, young people and families by undertaking a research dissertation in this area. We aim to provide you with a high quality and stimulating learning experience in a supportive environment that is enriched by an internationally-recognised research environment, nationally-recognised innovative clinical teaching approaches and current clinical practice.
