The Faculty of Education has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 Secondary specialisms available. We have a well established partnership with over 800 secondary schools and colleges across the North West region and beyond.

Our PGCE Psychology is aimed at trainees wishing to teach one or more of the social sciences (sociology, psychology and politics) in secondary schools and/or post-16 colleges.

It is amongst the first in the country designed to offer specific training to teach in the 14-19 sector and offers a trainee teacher exchange and links to schools in Europe and the USA. You will have the opportunity to learn about the common core areas taught in UK Psychology departments.

This is one of the most flexible on our continuing professional development programme offering a diverse portfolio of core and optional modules.
Core research modules include:
personal and professional development,
preparing for academic practice,
quantitative research methods,
qualitative research methods,
dissertation.
This route is most suited to those wishing to undertake higher level general studies in Psychology, or for those who want to develop their professional understanding and skills in specific areas of Psychology. It is also possible to design a specialised programme that is not available via one of the main routes.
Part time students are advised to take a minimum of 40 credits in the first year of study. The Dissertation and Personal and Professional Development units should be taken in the final year of study.

Research Route

This is most suitable for those who wish to undertake a higher research degree, but who are not ready commit to an MPhil or PhD. It enables students to undertake a substantial dissertation in any area of Psychology, supported by taught units – usually in research methods and/or a specialist subject.

Students opting for both routes benefit from an ongoing research environment guided by academic tutors who are research active across a variety of areas and feed into the activities of the Research Groups within the Faculty.
Part time students are advised to take a minimum of 40 credits in the first year of study. The Dissertation and Personal and Professional Development units should be taken in the final year of study.

International Research

Research in the department primarily focuses on solving real world problems, ensuring that our theoretically strong work has an impact outside academia. This Master's level, modular course builds on the innovative and diverse curriculum offered at undergraduate level. Intended for non Psychology graduates this on-line conversion course will equip the student with the requirements for the Society’s Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) and enable the student to qualify for further professional training in order to then pursue a career in Psychology.
The curriculum will be entirely delivered by E-Learning and Virtual Learning Environments including, for example Skype, Adobe Connect and other best practice examples of on-line learning.

Manchester Metropolitan University has been undertaking a review of the long-term future of academic provision at its Cheshire campus. It has now been confirmed that the University will withdraw from the Cheshire campus. This means that we expect the campus to close in the summer of 2019.

As the withdrawal from the campus will be a phased process we are still pleased to receive applications for one year full time postgraduate taught courses starting in 2017 on the Cheshire campus. We also continue to welcome applications for part time postgraduate courses of two years in duration in the Exercise and Sport Science department starting in 2017. Applications for courses that are expected to take longer than two years to complete are currently on hold.

Intellectually challenging and discipline-focussed, this programme prepares you for a career within your chosen sub-discipline of exercise and sport at an advanced level. Underpinned by research and practitioner expertise, an interdisciplinary perspective in encouraged. Opportunities for interaction across biomechanics, physiology and psychology, coaching studies, sport development and sports injury are included.

The course is flexible: major and minor in chosen subjects for your desired combination e.g. MA Exercise and Sport (Psychology with Biomechanics).

Full-time: Attendance at the University for 2 days per week from September to Easter. From Easter until completion attendance will be dependent on the research project being undertaken.

Part-time: University attendance for one day per week from September to Easter in the first year.

In the second year, one day a week for Terms 1 and 2 and then Easter to completion of research project as necessary.

Masters graduates have the potential to progress into research programmes and positions, sport science/coaching within a sport governing body or with the English Institute of Sport, Scottish and Welsh Sports Council or Sports Coach UK. For those who progress to achieve BPS Chartered status and HPC registration there are also many opportunities to practise in an applied environment either in exercise or sport. There are also consultancy and teaching opportunities at institutes of further and higher education.

This new programme is an NHS funded training programme and reflects the values of the NHS constitution. The programme will offer Psychology graduates the opportunity to prepare for practice as a speech and language therapist and to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
Speech and Language Therapists are concerned with the management of disorders of language, speech, fluency, voice, communication and swallowing in children and adults. This programme will focus in particular on creating research-active graduates who will contribute to evidence-based practice within the profession.
Applicants must have Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society
The recruitment process for this programme includes assessing applicants by interview for the core values of the NHS Constitution.

Further information

To complete the application process, you need to be able to reflect on the work of a speech and language therapist and have knowledge of communication difficulties. This information can be gained from observation of a speech and language therapy session (live or video) or from personal experience.
Considerable weight is given to relevant work or voluntary experience with one or more potential client groups.
You will also be expected to be able to express yourself competently in spoken and written English, have strong interpersonal skills, and be at least 18 years of age at the time of commencement of the course.
