Masters degrees in Production focus on the professional and practical creation of radio, film and TV media. They focus on the technology used for these formats as well as the design and management of effective projects.
Taught MA courses are typical for this field, though research oriented MRes and MPhil programmes may be available at some institutions. Entry requirements normally include an appropriate undergraduate degree, such as Media or Film Studies.
Depending on your specific interests and career prospects, a whole host of specialisms are available through studying a Masters in Production. For example, within television production you might focus on producing documentaries, sports programmes, drama or children’s shows. Within film, you might gear your studies towards horror, comedy or romance.
Across all specialisations, training will typically involve practical instrumental techniques for production, as well as activities involved in pre- and post-production of a particular project. This may include image and sound editing, transcription or subtitling. Consideration is also given to the audiences, economic structure and governance of the industry.
As well as roles in broadcasting, careers might include film directing, sound management, professional lighting and even screenwriting. You might also explore roles in public relations, consultancy or licensing for production industries.
