Preston is a city in Lancashire, in the north west of England – around 190 miles north of London. There is one university in Preston (alongside a few smaller higher education providers) and around 24,000 students.
Like many cities in northern England, Preston developed significantly during the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries. The modern city retains many historical features and heritage centres stemming from this period, including St Walburge’s Church – a Victorian Gothic revival building with the largest church spire in the country. A slightly more contemporary landmark in Preston is its famous Brutalist bus station, now a listed building and a local icon.
Postgraduate students in Preston have the chance to live in a modern city (with excellent road and rail transport links – including from the aforementioned bus station!) whilst also experiencing the unique landscape and culture of the north of England.
The city has many proud traditions, including being home to one of England’s oldest football teams and the first ever national champions: Preston North End FC.
Preston’s local university, the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN), has its roots in an early 19th-century institution for the education of local workers and has since developed to become one of England’s largest universities. It enrols a particularly high number of international students and is one of the best ranked of the UK’s modern universities.
In addition to UCLAN, postgraduate students in Preston can access Masters courses and educational resources in other nearby university cities, including Manchester and Liverpool.
With BAE Systems based in the city, Preston is one of the UK’s most important aerospace centres, and the fourth largest aerospace cluster in the world. Other companies with a significant presence in Preston include Dr Oetker, Booths and Amazon.
