Course details

The programme provides a clear framework for study, designed to suit both professional practitioners and those interested in the scholarship of education. Classes are either on campus or delivered through our Digital Learning Environment. The general MA Education route and modules are available as distance learning. All students take the Researching Education Practice in Context module (30 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits).

Our specialist and optional modules are designed to allow you the opportunity to pursue your own areas of interest, supported by knowledgeable and research-active academics. All of our general MA Education modules run every year, but subject-specialist modules may depend on demand. Practice-related inquiry modules are a special feature of the programme, where you negotiate a topic of study, supervised by one of the teaching team.

Programme design

The programme is designed to offer you maximum curricular choice within a clear structure by asking you to:
-Choose from a limited range of modules in one of the three specialisms or the general education pathway
-Set your own assignment topic related to module content within all modules
-Undertake optional modules in practice related inquiry and negotiate topics of personal interest with your lecturer
-Design your own research project on your chosen aspect of educational practice for your dissertation module

The way we assess work is through carefully constructed assessment modes that will prepare you for the different elements of dissertation work.

Teaching methods

We use a wide range of pedagogies to support inclusion and participation in higher education. The following is a list:
-Onsite whole class or tutorial sessions with module lecturers
-Online contact with lecturers and/or fellow students
-Directed study (specific tasks related to the module and set by lecturers for completion in your own time)
-Self-directed inquiry, research or scholarship (which may include undertaking a project, reading, work with children, work with colleagues, investigation of topic of interests, etc).

Networking and socialising

As a postgraduate student in Plymouth Institute of Education you'll have plenty of opportunities to attend postgraduate conference events and socialise with other masters and doctorate students at tea breaks on our taught Saturdays.

This Professional Studies (Outdoor Education/Outdoor Learning/Adventure Education) MA is the ideal course for ambitious professionals with a keen interest in developments within their field.

The project-based, work-centred course enables students to develop a critical appreciation of fundamental changes in their profession. All the while, students will work on acquiring the skills necessary to deal with the challenges these changes present. This responsive approach is grounded in the concept of action research, which encourages students to react to and explore issues as and when they emerge within their professional context. This flexible course is carefully structured, with three supervised projects based on a theme related to your field.

You’ll be supported throughout the course with project templates which clearly outline structure, content and the research process.

On this course, you’ll be assigned a project supervisor for each stage. Your supervisor will have expertise in the chosen area so that they can provide you with tailored guidance and support throughout. If necessary, a second supervisor will be introduced.

Students will also take part in research workshops in which they’ll explore particular research themes with other students. As a participant on this course, you’ll enjoy full access to a wide range of electronic resources, as well as additional tutorial support where necessary. It is anticipated that one of the course projects will lead to a joint publication between supervisor and student.

1st Year - PG Cert - Conceptual & Theoretical Discourses
There is the opportunity to consider the debates that constitute the terms of reference for Outdoor Education or Outdoor Learning or Adventure Education within organisations. For example: debates relating to the range and scope of the outdoor industry or field; ideology and outdoor interventions; the changing approaches and influences in education outdoors; the application of theory to Outdoor Education or Outdoor Learning or Adventure Education processes. This is an individual tutorial based course, in person in Plymouth and/or via Skype, telephone or email, whatever suits you best.

2nd Year - PG Dip - Contemporary Contextual Issues
This section will look at the students professional practice and how the policy drivers and process impact the provision of Outdoor Education or Outdoor Learning. This will include exploring the development of policy networks, the role of stakeholders, evaluation of the policy process and concepts and constructions of professionalism.

3rd Year - MA Masters Project - Developmental Considerations
This is an opportunity for the student to engage in a research project about their professional practice in context, with a focus on developmental based project work. For example direct engagement in some aspect of the strategic planning process within the student’s professional area. This may concern multi-agency and partnership work and could focus on participants or staff, pedagogy, programme design and implementation of strategies and initiatives.

Assessment of each stage of the programme will be based on the grade awarded for the completed project, formative assessment will also be provided at two points during the year in order to provide students with an indication of their progress.

Course details

You’ll spend two thirds of your PGCE on placement with 24 weeks in secondary school and five days in primary school, supported and supervised jointly by a school mentor and a faculty tutor. In addition to this you’ll cover modules on planning, assessment and teaching and you’ll also focus on the teaching of design and technology itself. You’ll maintain professional development and subject knowledge profiles enabling you to chart your development in meeting the professional standards required by the Department of Education. Assessments are based around school experience and are designed to be learning experiences shared with other students, mentors and tutors. You’ll learn to draw on your experience of teaching as well as provide evidence of reading and reflection.

On completion of this course, you’ll be fully prepared to support pupils aged from 11 to 16 (key stages three and four) in their secondary education.

The course comprises four main areas which are general professional studies, curriculum studies (with MFL-specific methodology), placements in lead and second schools (with a minimum of 150 days over three terms) and academic assignments.

This structure has been carefully developed to ensure you acquire all the skills you need to become a truly excellent secondary MFL teacher. You’ll explore a range of topics to give you a deep understanding of what teachers need to do on a daily basis in order to be effective in their role.

General Entry Requirements

In addition to the specific course entry requirements, all PGCE applicants will need to meet the following:

- Recent secondary school classroom observation experience.
- To be able to clearly and accurately communicate both spoken and written English.
- Candidates must take part in individual and group interviews with representatives from schools as well as University tutors.

Suitability Clearance

You will be required to:

- Provide a satisfactory DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service), Enhanced Disclosure, related to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the Joint Circular ‘Protection of Children’.

- Meet the Secretary of State’s requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach as detailed in ‘Fit to Teach’ by completing an on-line medical questionnaire.
