As a physiotherapist, you can make a real difference to the way people function physically, socially and psychologically. Physiotherapy aims to make the most of an individual's abilities through health promotion, preventive healthcare and rehabilitation.

Course details

Through this course you build on your prior learning to develop a critical understanding of contemporary physiotherapy practice. You gain the skills to be a safe, reflective, autonomous, professional practitioner able to manage clients across their lifespan in a variety of settings. Core skills underpinning physiotherapy include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and functional movement analysis. Appropriate intervention is underpinned by sound clinical reasoning and problem solving within the context of an evidence-based approach to clinical practice.We take a problem-based approach to learning, which includes opportunities to share aspects of learning with students from other allied health professions to promote teamwork and an appreciation of how other disciplines contribute to healthcare. Successful completion of the course provides eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy

Students studying this programme who obtain an NHS bursary can't also apply for a postgraduate loan from the Student Loan Company. From September 2018 funding for this programme will change. The website will be updated once this has been confirmed.

Professional accreditation

On successful completion of the course you'll be eligible to apply for membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council..

What you study

In Stage 1, you study the core sciences underpinning physiotherapy practice. You are introduced to a range of physiotherapy interventions which are responsive to client need and underpinned by evidence-based approaches to practice. You also explore professional issues in health and social care. During this stage you complete three clinical placements where you assess and treat your own patients under the supervision of qualified physiotherapists. You may be allocated placements within paediatrics, elderly care, learning disabilities and mental health services in addition to acute, medical, musculoskeletal and neurological areas. Clinical placements are arranged by academic tutors and you should be prepared to travel for some placements. 

In Stage 2 you complete three more clinical placements. You must complete 1,000 hours of satisfactory clinical practice to meet the requirements of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. You also develop your knowledge of the sciences underpinning physiotherapy and further explore the professional development of the physiotherapist and research methods.

In Stage 3 you complete your dissertation.

Teaching

How you learn

Various learning and teaching methods are used throughout the course and include keynote lectures, seminars and small-group work as well as practical laboratory sessions. You are encouraged and supported to engage in self-directed learning to prepare for practical sessions and seminars.

How you are assessed

Assessment is varied and reflects module learning outcomes. You are assessed by written assignments, oral presentations and practical examinations. In the interests of professional safety, you must complete all modules successfully. Essential competencies for this course include:

  • conducting assessment and treatment procedures safely and effectively
  • demonstrating high-level clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills
  • demonstrating satisfactory skills in communication and team working
  • evidence of appropriate selection and appraisal of methods of critical enquiry.

Clinical placements are assessed at undergraduate level.

Employability

Opportunities are available for employment within the NHS, private sector or charitable trusts – in hospitals, GP surgeries, schools, industry and in the community. You could also consider a career working in clinical research or teaching, in the UK or overseas.

The School of Health & Social Care has been commissioned to provide cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) training to graduates within mental health professions delivering CBT within Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services in response to the Department of Health’s commitment to improve access to psychological therapies for people with depression and anxiety.

Course details

The course has achieved level 2 accreditation with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) which means that on completion you are eligible to apply for provisional accreditation with the BABCP. The course is suitable for you if you are working in non IAPT services and wish to undertake CBT training.

Teaching in terms one and two centres on developing a level of competence in relation to the fundamental principles of CBT enabling you to apply CBT to people with depression and anxiety. You gain an understanding of how scientific principles inform CBT clinical practice. In addition you undertake a module through distance learning which develops your ability to understand how evidence is generated, retrieved, evaluated and importantly, employed within practice. The second year extends your learning of CBT knowledge and skills to enable you to develop competencies in specialist techniques applied to depression and anxiety disorders.

Professional accreditation

When not at University you are required to spend your clinical time developing your case load for clients who have depression or an anxiety disorder with access to a BABCP accredited supervisor.

What you study

In the first two terms you focus on the development of the knowledge and skills required for the application of the fundamental principles of CBT for cases of depression and anxiety disorders, including the underpinning scientific principles and research literature, assessment processes, CBT formulation and related CBT therapeutic processes and interventions. 

The second year extends your learning of CBT knowledge and skills to enable you to become a competent CBT practitioner with more complex cases of depression and anxiety disorders. You also learn the techniques necessary to carry out literature searches and critically to appraise the literature.

Where you study

You study at the new purpose-built Darlington campus and Teesside University campus.

How you learn

The learning and teaching strategy is to deliver the course using a range of classroom and workplace learning methods. These include skills-based workshops and weekly CBT case supervision, both group and individual.

How you are assessed

In accordance with the BABCP accreditation criteria, assessment of your CBT knowledge and skills is through a range of methods, including a assessed video-taped CBT sessions and case studies.

Employability

Work placement

To enrol on this programme you must work in a clinical setting which enables you to provide cognitive behavioural therapy interventions to a range of people with depression and anxiety related problems from assessment through to completing treatment protocols.

Career opportunities

Once you pass the course you are eligible to register for provisional accreditation with the BABCP as a cognitive behavioural therapist. Following completion of the PgDip Cognitive Behavioural Therapy you have the opportunity to continue your studies and complete a 60-credit master’s level dissertation and a 20-credit Designing Research Project module, successful completion will lead to an MSc Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This is only offered part-time and must be taken within five years of commencing the PgDip. 

If you who have not undertaken the PgDip Cognitive Behavioural Therapy at Teesside University you must complete an additional 20-credit Evidence-based Practice module, before you can apply for the MSc Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

The course enables you to:

  • develop the knowledge, skills and resources necessary to perform evidence-based trauma and orthopaedic practice in order to support career progression
  • further develop an understanding of the knowledge and clinical principles underpinning contemporary orthopaedic surgery
  • foster a commitment to lifelong learning and an inquisitive approach to clinical practice
  • make a contribution to trauma and orthopaedic knowledge and/or clinical practice by undertaking an independent audit, research or evaluation project.
  • A flexible approach to course delivery has been used, and for the majority of modules you can choose to study by attending taught sessions or by distance learning.

What you study

In Year 1 you study a number of modules which develop your understanding of the principles underpinning clinical practice in trauma and orthopaedics and develop your skills in evidence-based practice, research methods and statistics. In Year 2 you undertake a 60-credit dissertation which involves planning, managing and writing up a small-scale research project, plus a 20-credit option module.

Teaching

How you learn

Our learning and teaching strategy uses a blended approach. You must attend the Trauma and Orthopaedics module as block teaching. For all other modules the learning and teaching strategy is designed to be as flexible as possible. You can choose to study by attending classes, by distance learning or by flexible learning (a combination of attendance and distance learning). 

If you are an attending student, learning and teaching methods include key lectures, seminars involving group discussions and structured learning activities, practical computer lab classes and tutorial support. 

For distance learners, we use the virtual learning environment to provide you with interactive structured learning materials – written learning materials, narrated PowerPoint presentations, structured-learning materials and activities, alongside discussion boards, wikis and blogs to support discussion with module tutors and other students. 

We provide tutorial support by email, phone or Skype for if you are distance learning student. As a flexible learner you can use both of these approaches throughout each module depending on your personal needs and work commitments. 

How you are assessed

We use a variety of assessment strategies throughout your programme. Formative assessment supports your learning in some modules. Each module is summatively assessed and includes written report, seen exam, data analysis project, research proposal, written exam, oral exam and dissertation.

Employability

The programme offers a structured and logical progression to learning with a firm link to your specialist area of practice within trauma and orthopaedics. Most graduates are employed in specialty training posts. This programme can support your career progression to consultant level.
