A picturesque and historic city, Padua (Padova in Italian) is situated in northern Italy. It has many cultural and architectural attractions and is home to the famous University of Padova.
Padua claims to be one of the oldest cities in Northern Italy. Part of the Veneto region, it is located close to Venice, Verona and Treviso.
The area has a rich and varied history, allegedly founded by the Trojan prince Antenor and undergoing Hun, Gothic, Lombard, Frankish, Episcopal, Venetian, and Austrian conquests. Padua also has a storied past (literally) as the setting for works such as Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and Oscar Wilde's The Duchess of Padua.
The area features historic mediaeval marketplaces alongside beautiful frescos, facades and piazzas. Padua also has a long history of higher education and has been welcoming travelling students for almost 800 years. You’ll be easily at home as a Masters student in Padua, with plenty of parks, river banks, museums, exhibits, music, sport and cultural highlights to enjoy.
The University of Padova was established in 1222, making it the second oldest in Italy and one of the oldest in the world. Famous alumni include Andrea Vesalio, Copernicus, Galileo, Diego Valeri, Concetto Marchesi and Giuseppe Colombo. It’s part of the Coimbra Group of historical research universities which includes the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Heidelberg, Salamanca, Jena, KU Leuven and Leiden.
