The MA History (History of Medicine) is a distinctive strand within our MA History. Teaching and learning

The MA course is taught through small-group seminars, workshops and individual tutorials. Assessment is entirely by written work. There are no examinations.

Specialist facilities

Oxford Brookes is home to the Centre for Medical Humanities (CMH). The Centre was established in early 2015. It marks an exciting expansion and diversification of the work previously conducted through the Centre for Health, Medicine and Society which over the past 15 years has been the beneficiary of substantial support from both Oxford Brookes University and the Wellcome Trust. The CMH is building on this track record of outstanding research and grant successes, innovative teaching, career development and public outreach. Engaging with the expanding field of medical humanities, the CMH brings historians of medicine together with scholars from History, History of Art, Philosophy, Social and Life Sciences as well as Anthropology and Religion. It thus aims to foster genuine interdisciplinary collaboration amongst staff and students through a range of new research and teaching initiatives, which reflect the new concerns with the relationship between medicine and the humanities in the twentieth first century.

Students have access to Oxford Brookes University’s special Welfare collection, as well as numerous local medical archive resources. They also have access to the world famous Bodleian Library, a copyright library, which houses all books published in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In addition to the Bodleian and its unparalleled collection of books and rare historical manuscripts, there are affiliated libraries such as Rhodes House, home to the Bodleian Library of Commonwealth and African Studies, and the Vere Harmsworth Library of the Rothermere American Institute, where students will find one of the finest collections of publications on the Political, Economic and Social History of the United States from colonial times to the present.

Oxford is a lively centre for events, exhibitions, seminars and open lectures in various specialist areas of history, which staff and students at Brookes regularly attend.

It is also an easy bus or train ride to London for convenient access to a wider resource of historical materials. These include various seminars and lecture series offered by the University of London and the Institute of Historical Research. In addition, The National Archives at Kew, The British Library and other specialised libraries will be of particular interest to students.

Oxford is also within easy reach of other archival collections in Birmingham, Cambridge, Reading and Bristol.

Careers

Students who have completed an MA have developed a variety of careers. A significant number have gone on to undertake PhD study and secondary school history teaching. Others have taken up careers in archive management; law; accountancy; local government and the civil service as well as GCHQ - all jobs which require excellent research and analysis skills.

The advent of affordable rapid genome sequencing will produce enormous amounts of genetic data on both individuals and populations, and the challenge for scientists is to unlock the potential of this ‘big data’. Doing so requires a new generation of scientists who can combine genetics and bioinformatics to understand how genomic changes cause diseases such as cancer, thus enabling the development of novel treatments, through drugs and gene therapy, and prevention strategies. With the huge expansion in number of individual genomes being sequenced, this is one of the fastest growing areas of biomedical science as we embrace the era of personalised medicine.

The MSc Global Health Science is a one-year full-time degree that provides core training in the basic skills of epidemiology and statistics, followed by detailed lectures on the global burden and determinants of disease.

The course is open to graduates in medicine, biomedical science and other numerate disciplines. 25 places will be available for entry in October 2017.

Course structure

The course will provide advanced training in epidemiological principles and procedures and the statistical analysis of epidemiological data, critical appraisal, study design and protocol development together with advanced knowledge and understanding of the global burden of disease and its determinants. This is an intensive course with 15-20 hours of contact time per week throughout the taught component of the course.

In addition a series of weekly 'masterclasses' is scheduled in which internationally-recognised senior scientists in population health from Oxford, and elsewhere, will give seminars on selected topics. These sessions will be outside of the structure of the core modules, and are intended to provide the students with stimulating materials to integrate population health thinking and perspectives.

Pattern of teaching, learning and supervision

The teaching is delivered through a range of methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, student presentations, self-directed learning and study.

During the first two terms there are a series of formative assessments designed to enable teaching staff to monitor student progress. These marks do not contribute to the final marks. All students are provided with detailed feedback that will enable them to improve their learning by helping them identify their strengths and weaknesses.

There are four summative assessments in total. At the end of the Easter break this includes the submission of a data set analysis and report, and an extended essay. At the beginning of the third term there are two examinations involving two written papers comprising multi-component questions.

Following the written examinations students will undertake a research placement, leading to a dissertation. The purpose of the research placement and dissertation is to develop and deepen an appreciation and understanding of epidemiological concepts and skills learned during the course and to apply to a real world situation through independent study.

The University of Oxford is a world leader in Immunology. This course, run by the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, is a one-year, full-time course comprising of two taught terms followed by a 14 week laboratory based research project within a University of Oxford laboratory.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis, with each module requiring approximately 36 hours of staff contact time and 200 hours of total student input in each 12-week semester.

The main theme of the teaching and learning aspect of this MSc is to encourage you to develop the necessary skills to understand and communicate advanced theoretical and research-based knowledge of nutrition to people who participate in sport and exercise. Learning methods reflect the wide variety of topics associated with applied sport and exercise nutrition and include lectures, directed reading, workshops, seminars, practical exercises, laboratory sessions and project work. The research project will be supervised on a one-to-one basis.

Student performance in each module is usually assessed by evaluation of the quality of written or design work, and verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project case work, design and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations, and practical exercises.

Many sports are becoming increasingly professional in their approach to training and nutrition. For example, many sports clubs now employ full-time nutrition consultants. Career prospects outside sport are perhaps even more exciting. The NHS offers an increasing number of opportunities for students with specialist training in exercise nutrition to support GP referral schemes and other healthy living programmes. The growing awareness of health within society, coupled with misunderstandings about the relationships between physical activity, nutrition and health has led to an increasing demand for graduates who can deliver evidence-based solutions and advice at all levels. Research or teaching within further or higher education also provide potential career opportunities.

Graduates progress to a diverse range of careers including exercise and lifestyle consultants based within hospitals and private practice. Various graduates have secured full time and part time work with professional sports teams as well as the Institutes of Sport in the UK. Graduates also progress to work in major international companies such as GlaxoSmithKline or are employed as industry consultants, dieticians and nutrition counsellors. This innovative and dynamic MSc course is appropriate for all health, social care and exercise professionals working with different patient or client groups, adults or children. A strength of the course is the opportunity it provides to work with practitioners from different professions, from different patient and client groups and from a variety of countries which all helps promote a diverse view of rehabilitation.

This course enables practitioners to examine their own rehabilitation practice in light of the analysis of key concepts and theories. Teaching and learning

Teaching, learning and assessment strategies are intended to promote an interprofessional, patient-centred and practice-focused approach to rehabilitation.

Opportunities for interprofessional learning - sharing existing and developing skills, knowledge and experience - are maximised. All teaching, learning experiences and specific assessments is focused on the individual and their rehabilitation programme. If you are not in practice, or not from a health care background, the sharing of knowledge and experience can be of particular value. To make the most of the range of experience, skills and knowledge within the group, a variety of teaching and learning strategies will be employed, including seminars, group work and case studies.

Assessment methods used within the course are varied; they are designed to be stimulating as well as academically rigorous, and are based on your learning needs, individual aims, content, and the academic standards expected for the course. Assessment is based on coursework consisting of academic and reflective essays and case studies.

Teaching and learning

In health and social care no professional group works in isolation. Oxford Brookes teaches a wide range of pre-qualification and foundation courses including health and social care, nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, operating department practice, paramedic emergency care, and social work. You will share your learning with students on all these other health care courses. This is a key component of the course and is essential in developing your teamwork skills, and your understanding of the other roles you will encounter in practice.

We offer a friendly and supportive environment in which to learn; we consistently receive very high satisfaction ratings for our student support and learning resources in student surveys. We have excellent teaching facilities, dedicated clinical skills suites and simulation resources, which include a very well-equipped movement laboratory, a family of computerised simulation manikins (including a simman, simbaby and birthing mother), an extensive range of anatomy models and fully networked computer rooms.

We have excellent library resources, accessible both through the web and through a range of locally-based facilities on university and NHS sites.

Information technology plays an important role in health care courses and a very extensive range of learning resources can be accessed through ‘Brookes Virtual’, an online repository of lectures, handouts, information and learning exercises.

Various teaching and learning methods are used, such as peer-group presentations, lectures and seminars, with information technology playing an increasingly important role.

Careers

On completion of the course, physiotherapists may work in units with expertise in:
- Neurology
- Respiratory care
- Orthopaedics
- Musculoskeletal conditions
- Care of the elderly
- Paediatrics.

There are also employment opportunities in professional sport, industry and private practice.

Physiotherapists are employed in an increasing range of settings in acute hospitals and in primary care settings in the community. They have the opportunity to care for a wide range of individuals, from newborn babies to elderly members of the population.

Free language courses for students - the Open Module

Free language courses are available to full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students on many of our courses, and can be taken as a credit on some courses.

Please note that the free language courses are not available if you are:
- studying at a Brookes partner college
- studying on any of our teacher education courses or postgraduate education courses.

Research highlights

The Centre for Rehabilitation within the Department of Sport and Health Sciences has strong leadership in the director, Professor Helen Dawes. The Centre brings together research, education and care. It is underpinned by a strong, well-published research group, the Movement Science Group, along with clinical expertise, rehabilitation, knowledge and care of adults and children with neurological conditions. Within the Centre, staff, students and alumni across the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences are engaged in a number of research projects.
