On the MA in Film Studies: Popular Cinema you will develop a historically-informed and critically aware understanding of film as an industry, art form, and cultural product. Through this course, you will build a broad portfolio of writing and research skills by combining academic and professional writing projects. We cover the history and theory of popular cinema in the US (classical and contemporary Hollywood), Europe and East Asia (especially Japanese cinema). Through modules on story development and research methods you will sharpen your writing skills in preparation for your dissertation project.

You will develop skills central to a career in either academia or the media industries. You will be taught by a diverse team of film specialists with different national and cultural backgrounds, as well as by industry professional guest speakers.

The School of Arts offers a unified hub for the arts in the Richard Hamilton Building, with state-of-the-art technical facilities and 24-hour studio access. All Film Studies staff are active researchers publishing widely on subjects such as: Italian films and their audiences, puzzle films, film theory, film policy, film tourism, visual anthropology, and crime films.

You will have the opportunity to go on the annual field trip to the Cannes Film Festival. We have an advisory panel of film industry experts including leading directors, journalists, and producers and technical specialists who contribute to the programme and our annual series of Film Studies events, including an annual Careers Day. Research and teaching programmes linked to some of Oxford’s premier cultural organisations such as Modern Art Oxford, the Ultimate Picture Palace, Oxford Contemporary Music, and locally held Film Festivals.

You will be part of a stimulating environment where creative practitioners and writers about the arts and culture work closely together to form specialist research units and interdisciplinary research clusters in diverse areas from videogaming to modernism.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is centred around film screenings, seminars, individual tutorials and, in the case of Story Development, intensive writing workshops.

Assessment activities include writing academic essays and a dissertation. Other assessments include professional writing activities - book reviews, feature articles, and screenplays.

Having a master's qualification helps you to stand out from the crowd, whether you are joining the MA straight after graduating or returning to study after a break of several years.

It is available as a full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 year) programme.


The degree is designed for:

Students intending to focus on Internet-related research in the further pursuit of a doctoral degree in information, communication, or any of the social sciences.

Students wishing to gain the skills and knowledge needed for professional careers in leading technology companies, consulting firms, and the wide variety of businesses that increasingly need employees who understand technology and how people use it;

Students wishing to pursue a career in Internet communications policy or regulation;

Professionals working in Internet-related fields, and who wish to gain a broader understanding of the societal aspects of its design or use.

Students take a combination of examined core and option papers and produce a 10,000-15,000 word thesis on a research topic agreed with an academic supervisor. The MSc Digital Media Production will provide you with the skills and professional level expertise in the industry standard tools that are needed for the creation of contemporary media products. As a student with a first degree in a discipline other than a technically-based media subject, you will learn to operate digital equipment and manipulate data to produce finished products for the creative industries.

This course covers video and audio production, computer graphics and animation, and the making of interactive products for distribution via new media platforms, as well as the longer established media of television, video and audio. You will work on the award-winning Brookes TV, making and producing broadcasts. There are also opportunities to work on live projects for external clients, producing promotional materials, a fast expanding area of employment.

Teaching and learning

Learning methods include lectures, directed reading, workshops, presentations, seminars, and practical and project work.

Teaching is organised on a module-credit basis, involving approximately 200 hours of student input and approximately 36 hours of staff contact, normally delivered through a weekly three-hour teaching block over a 12-week period.

Each course module is assessed individually, generally on the quality of written or design work, and to some extent on verbal presentations. Assessment methods may include essays, seminar papers, class tests, project work, design and oral presentations, workshops, simulations, and practical exercises.

Teaching and learning also draws on the diverse professional backgrounds, experience and knowledge of academics and visiting lecturers from industry.

Careers and professional development

Students graduate from the course with a broad skill set that equips them to move into a career in film and television post production, the computer games industry or live television production. Our graduates may work as freelance movie producers, graphic or games designers, but also find successful careers in international companies, such as Google, Microsoft, Discovery Channel and the BBC.

You do not need to wait for your references before you apply and while we do not have a deadline for applications and continue to accept students through the summer, the earlier you apply, the earlier we can respond. 

We usually offer an interview to applicants which can be in person if you live near Oxford. Alternatively, we can telephone you or offer a Skype interview.
