The cost of teaching materials varies per module but will not exceed £20 for any one module. Many of the materials are available for loan free-of-charge from the University library.

The minimum age upon entry to this course is 17 and our English language courses are adult courses. The university does not act `in loco parentis' and cannot provide 24 hour supervision of our 17-year-olds. A signed Parental Consent form for Under 18s is required prior to enrolment.

What you will study

To qualify as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant students are required to complete:
• 15 examinations
• 450 days of technical work experience, which you gain by obtaining a training contract with an appropriate employer
• Professional development (delivered through ICAEW or your employer)
• Ethics and professional scepticism programme (delivered through ICAEW)

The ACA Qualification comprises three examination levels: Certificate, Professional and Advanced. A Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (ICAEW CFAB) qualification is available upon completion of the Certificate Level, which is an excellent qualification in its own right for non-financial managers.

At the Advanced Level students are required to study a number of technical areas, which are then examined together in the Corporate Reporting and Strategic Business Management papers. How you will study

We offer a flexible portfolio of ACA courses that appeal to large or small training organisations.Our average student pass rate on our ACA course since its inception in 2012 has been 83%.

Weekly day release tuition (with block revision):
• Available at City Campus, Newport for all Levels (Certificate, Professional, Advanced)
• Papers taught for one day per week, with a block revision period at the end
• Typical tuition period lengths:
• Certificate Level papers – 10 weeks plus revision block
• Professional Level papers – 11-14 weeks plus revision block
• Advanced Level – 18 weeks plus revision block
• Advantages: Knowledge built up and exam question practice undertaken week on week. Students build skills gradually and sustainably, and are not absent from their work place for long periods of time (which is particularly important for smaller accounting practices)

Full block delivery:
• Available at Atlantic House, Cardiff for Professional and Advanced Levels
• For example, students study two papers at a time at Professional Level and attend tuition for four whole weeks, spaced across a number of months
• 2-3 days spent on each paper per week
• Four tuition weeks: two focus on knowledge building, one on question practice, and one on revision

Assessment methods

Certificate level:
Each assessment is 1.5 hours long and each exam will be e-assessed.

Professional level:
Modules will be assessed by paper based exams. Each will be 2.5 hours long, with the exception of the Financial Accounting and Reporting paper which will be assessed by a three hour exam.

Advanced level:
Consists of two technical integration papers and a case study:

• Technical integration papers will be 3.5 hours long
• Case Study will be four hours long

Learning and teaching methods

Students will attend workshops which will contain lecture, tutorial and question practice elements.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

ACA students enjoy early responsibility and excellent career progression. Many ACA students double their salary during training. Salaries for newly qualified ICAEW Chartered Accountants are on a par with careers in law and banking and many become partners or financial directors early in their careers, leading to a greater variety of opportunities.

ICAEW Chartered Accountants work at the highest levels of some of the world’s largest organisations; 80% of UK FTSE 100 companies have an ICAEW Chartered Accountant on their board.

Our ACCA course is taught in groups of two modules, where you study one or two modules for 13 weeks and then complete the December examinations. When you return in February, you study a different two modules and complete the examinations for these in June. In addition, our ACCA course is taught in “bite-size” blocks of between three and a four hours each week, rather than studying the subject for a whole day or week.

One of the most popular jobs on graduating is to go on to train as a chartered accountant. The PhD programme in Accounting will facilitate the creation and interpretation of new knowledge by the research student, demonstrated through the thesis. The programme comprises a short taught component followed by a longer research phase. Taught modules allow the students to broaden, as well as deepen, their knowledge of research methods at the same time as undertaking their own research and developing a set of transferable professional skills. The taught component is designed to ensure that doctoral researchers understand the breath of techniques used in modern social science research.

Doctoral researchers will be capable of analysing a range of data using a range of qualitative and quantitative techniques. They will be able to explain theories underlying different approaches to social science research. Doctoral researchers are expected to participate to the fullest possible extent in the life of the Department of Accounting and the Business School. This means attending seminars organised by the Department of Accounting and more widely in the Business School thereby helping expose doctoral researchers to new ideas emanating from outside their own area of specialisation. It also requires actively participating in PhD workshops and conferences organised by the Department of Accounting, the Business School and Graduate School as well as institutions outside the University of Birmingham.

Ultimately all doctoral researchers will have the ability to characterise and solve business and accounting problems using advanced research tools. They should be able to derive policy implications from their research and communicate these to policy makers, practitioners and other academics in a manner which is comprehensible. They will also be able to peer review others’ research and offer constructive criticism and to extend the frontiers of the discipline through their own innovative research.

Doctoral researchers may choose to become academics, work in Government, businesses, supranational organisations or in the research arms of major financial institutions. They are expected to achieve a substantial understanding of contemporaneous accounting and business issues enabling them to take a lead in ongoing debates within society. They will be aware of and understand the function of related institutions at both a national and international level.

Programme Structure

You will take one core and two optional courses, and complete a substantive independent work portfolio. Delivered by Guildford School of Acting (GSA), one of the most highly regarded theatre schools in the UK, this programme provides world-class training alongside a sterling reputation and excellent industry links.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Our new and innovative MFA Acting builds on the success of GSA’s current postgraduate programme by extending the high-quality, intensive training currently offered on our one year MA Acting programme. The MFA Acting programme is highly selective and intensive: students train for four semesters over two years, taking classes in acting, voice, movement and professional development, exploring a wide range of theatre traditions and performance styles in rehearsal projects and public productions.

This unique programme is delivered by expert teachers with extensive first-hand experience in the professional theatre sector in both the UK and the US.

Our beautiful campus boasts strong transport links to London, meaning our students can easily benefit from GSA’s proximity to the heart of UK theatre; London’s West End. This means our students not only receive world-class training, but are also heavily exposed to London theatre, cultural activities and highly beneficial industry networks.

This programme is studied full-time over four consecutive semesters and two academic years.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

Our MFA in Acting will provide graduates with:
-The ability to employ a broad range of acting knowledge and skills in the creation and presentation of roles
-The ability to perform in plays of various types and from various periods
-The acquisition of advanced understanding and capabilities in voice and speech, movement, and play analysis
-A working knowledge of historical, critical, and theoretical content and the ways they inform playwriting and dramatic writing, the creation of roles, and other aspects of production

This is a unique professional course that has been designed specifically for overseas students. MFA Acting (International) offers the full spectrum of acting skills, including voice, movement and singing and approaches to rehearsal and public performances. The course focuses on advanced practical acting skills and also takes in the study of Shakespeare and other classical traditions.

Example structure

We offer dynamic and unique course for actors, directors, technical theatre specialists and students of theatre practice. Training at East 15 draws upon 50 years of tradition combined with a keen sense of the world of stage and screen today.

First Term
The first term includes the module Acting Technique based on the Stanislavsky approach, which addresses the key physical and vocal skills for acting, enabling students who are coming from a variety of training traditions to identify and achieve the required level of preparation for the subsequent modules.

It also allows tutors to make a diagnostic assessment of your skills and potential, and identify and implement any additional work in these core areas.

The module on Shakespeare enables you to develop your understanding of the meaning and mechanics of Shakespeare’s text. It introduces you to specific vocal techniques for the performance of Renaissance text and allow you to consider how a range of archaic and contemporary performance settings influence the actor’s and director’s approaches to Shakespeare in performance.

In addition, you study a range of analytical and experimental approaches to script that are useful to the actor and there are opportunities to develop your clarity, accuracy, and expressiveness in speaking Renaissance text. The Shakespeare module normally includes a two-week workshop at Shakespeare’s Globe, where you have an opportunity to perform on the Globe stage.

Second Term
The second term includes the Character and Scene Study module which extends the work begun in Acting Technique. It uses a Realist approach to acting as its base, allowing you to pursue longer and more challenging acting explorations. Scene work is undertaken on scripts by, for example, Ibsen, Strindberg, and Realist texts from the last 50 years. The module extends and applies Realist acting techniques, and includes a study of theories and assumptions underlying Realism.

A module on Contemporary UK Texts introduces you to key contemporary texts from the UK theatre, and to scripts from the twentieth-century that continue to have a place in and to influence contemporary UK theatre. It allows you to extend your vocal, physical, and analytical skills in the creation of roles that reflect a current cultural context and offers an opportunity to create and perform a complete role in the context of a fully staged play.

Third Term
You work on a written dissertation or a practical project. The year usually culminates in a full length production in a London venue.
