Following completion of the PgDip in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Occupational Health Nursing) an opportunity will be available to continue your studies and complete a 60 credit master’s level dissertation module leading to an MSC Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Occupational Health Nursing). This is undertaken as one year part-time or six months full-time study after SCPHN (OH) registration with the NMC. It must be completed within five years of commencing the PgDip.

This care will be to people with increasingly complex needs and the people working in these health and social care structures will have to be more flexible to accommodate this.

Course details

The district nurse must respond to these challenges and the Queen's Nursing Institute/Queen's Nursing Institute Scotland (QNI/QNIS) Voluntary Standards for District Nurse Education and Practice (2015) provide a strong framework for district nurses in the current NHS as well as the skills and knowledge base needed to respond to the dynamic nature of community nursing. 

There are two programmes at master’s level: the postgraduate diploma and the masters. (The postgraduate diploma is Year 1 of the full master's degree.) By successfully completing either of these programmes you achieve the new QNI/QNIS Voluntary Standards for District Nurse Education and Practice as well as the standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for the Specialist Practice in Nursing in the Home/District Nursing professional qualification which is recorded on the NMC register. This qualification has integrated within it the Community Practitioner Prescribing (V100) qualification (NMC 2006), enabling you to prescribe from the community practitioner’s formulary.

You will also have demonstrated skills at Level 3 of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines in brief interventions which is a requirement for a district nurse as set out in the Health Education England’s District Nursing and General Practice Education and Career Framework (2015). 

The programmes have been designed in consultation with local employers, professional standards bodies, students (past and present), service users and carers, and district nurse educators from across the country. We hope that this has led to programmes of study which are challenging, contemporary, inspiring and enjoyable. 

When you successfully complete your chosen programme, you are well prepared for the dynamic and inspiring world of community nursing as well as being in a strong position to apply for position as a district nurse and team leader.

What you study

For both programme routes, you study seven modules full time across a total period of 44 weeks. The PgDip route (which is the first year of the master’s route) includes practice competencies which you achieve on placement. The balance of the course is 50% theory and 50% practice. 

If you continue to the MSc route after your first year, you undertake an eighth module which gives you 60 credits as a part-time student. This module involves you carrying out live research or a systematic review.

Teaching

Where you study

In Year 1 of the MSc (the whole of the PgDip) teaching is split equally between the practice placement and theoretical study. 

The practice placement is organised by your local trust which sponsors you for your place on the programme. This placement is usually in a different team to the one in which you have been working to give you a contrasting learning experience. 

The theoretical learning is largely at our Middlesbrough campus. If you are studying the MSc, then the teaching in Year 2 is largely self-directed with supervisor support and can be arranged to suit you and your supervisor.

How you learn

These programmes require you to commit to a very comprehensive and individual approach to learning. 

There are opportunities for some components of your learning to be accredited through recognised prior learning – this is agreed on an individual basis. 

This course helps you gain confidence in accessing digital resources. You share some of your learning with other students on the postgraduate district nursing programme, some with students on other programmes and some further time with just your own programme. 

Classroom teaching includes group discussions, presentations, project work and clinical skills development in practical labs. We highly value the experience and knowledge of service users and carers who are involved in the programme, for example through teaching activities and assessment. Your practice teacher plays a significant role in ensuring that you have access to great learning opportunities during placement. Their skills and experiences also provide you with an excellent role model. 

The final dissertation module within the MSc route gives you the opportunity to focus on an aspect of district nursing which interests you. You investigate this issue in depth either through live research or a systematic review. 

How you are assessed

You are assessed in a number of ways as we know that everyone learns differently. 

These include exams, essays, reflections, reports, viva voce, simulations, research proposals, assessment of competencies in practice evidenced through a portfolio, and dissertation (if you are on the MSc programme). 

Your practice teacher or sign-off mentor is key to your practice assessments.

Employability

When you successfully complete the programme, you are well prepared for the dynamic and inspiring world of community nursing with an advanced level of professional knowledge. You are also well placed to apply for a position as a district nurse and team leader.

Following successful completion of the postgraduate diploma, you can return to Teesside University within five years to enrol on the MSc route.

Such a focus ensures you are equipped with the necessary foundations to develop an evidence-based approach to practice throughout your career.

Teaching

How you learn

A range of learning and teaching methods are used throughout the course. You can choose to study either by attending classes or by distance learning. Learning and teaching methods for the attendance mode of study include lectures, seminars, computer lab classes, structured online resource-based learning materials, small group work and tutorials. If you study by distance learning you will be provided with regular online structured learning materials and be encouraged to take part in online discussion with other students and the programme team. Supervision and support are provided by the personal tutor, the programme leader, the module leaders and dissertation supervisors. You are also expected to undertake some self-study to support your learning.

The programmes are flexible and modular, covering a range of subject matters relevant to anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain. Credits from the component modules can be combined to provide a postgraduate certificate, diploma or master’s-level qualification. You study the central aspects of evidence-based medicine and research, and how to apply these to your anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain practice to enhance the quality of your individual clinical practice and broader service delivery. You share a number of modules with other master’s-level programmes giving you many opportunities to mix with other students and share academic and professional experiences. The emphasis is on integrating theory and clinical practice in a multi-professional working and learning environment.

You develop an ability to understand how evidence is generated, retrieved, evaluated and importantly, employed in practice. The programmes enhance inter-professional learning and direct the focus of learning toward evidence based clinical decision making and quality improvement to enhance service delivery. This is in line with the Government’s policy visions to develop evidence based, quality improvement driven professional practice.The programmes offer a structured and logical progression to learning, with a firm link to your anaesthesia, perioperative medicine and pain practice. How you learn

The learning and teaching strategy is as flexible as possible. You can choose to study by attending classes, by distance learning or flexible learning (a combination of attendance and distance learning). 

For attending students, learning and teaching methods include key lectures, seminars involving group discussions and structured learning activities, practical computer lab classes and tutorial support.

For distance learners our virtual learning environment provides you with interactive structured learning materials such as written learning materials, narrated PowerPoint presentations, and structured learning materials and activities. Alongside this you can access a range of forums – discussion boards, wikis and blogs to support your discussion with module tutors and other students. Tutorial support is provided by email, phone or Skype. 

If you are a flexible learner you can use these two approaches flexibly throughout each module depending on your personal needs and work commitments. Our learning and teaching strategy, and opportunities for feedback for flexible learners includes aspects of the attendance and distance learning strategies.

How you are assessed

We use a variety of assessment strategies. Formative assessment supports your learning in some modules. Each module is summatively assessed through a written report, seen exam, data analysis project, research proposal, quality improvement proposal, critical commentary and – for the MSc only – a dissertation.

The programme is designed to develop and equip critical champions and ambassadors for quality, safety and governance in health and social care. It enables you to apply your comprehensive knowledge, understanding, expertise and advanced skills to lead evidence-based enhancement of quality, safety and governance in your health and social care settings and evaluate the impact of this. The programme is suitable for individuals from the public, independent and voluntary sectors from any professional background, including clinical and support services.

What you study

Year 1 focuses on the transition to mastery and explores the context of safety, quality and governance in terms of policy, theory and experience, at a personal, local, national and international level. You also study different types and sources of evidence. You use these to identify a quality, safety or governance issue of relevance to your role based on an in-depth study of the principles, practices and tools of safety and governance in health and social care. You then develop and justify a business case for change based on this.

The modules studied in Year 1 make up the Advancing Quality Improvement in Health and Social Care, PgCert.

In Year 2, you plan and implement a change project based on your business case presented at the end of Year 1. To help you achieve this you study topics such as a human factors approach, strategic change management, action learning and leadership and evaluation methodologies. You then develop and critique an evaluation study proposal in Year 2 which you take forward during your dissertation module in Year 3. The modules studied in Year 2 make up the Advancing Human Factors in Health and Social Care, PgCert.

We use a range of assessment modes throughout the programme. These include an essay on the nature and use of evidence, analysis of a quality, safety or governance issue using a human factors approach, a business case and the final dissertation evaluating the change you have implemented.

The programme is supported by a critical friends stakeholder support forum which consists of service users and carers, employer representatives and academic staff. Members of this group participate in student assessment as well as supporting programme design and delivery as a means of ensuring the person-centred approach pervades all aspects of the programme and to maximise employer/organisational benefit.

How you learn

These programme use e-learning as a key resource to enhance your learning and support. You use our virtual learning environment, [email protected] for all of your modules. we provide links to useful online resources and web-based interactive activities related to autism. 

You also learn through discussion boards remotely from your home or at your practice placement site. In addition you learn through keynote lectures, seminars, case-study and scenario-based discussions and critical incident analyses in the form of group work. This enhances your learning and provides support for your modular assessment. 

We use debate and argument to stimulate you to be an active participant in your reflective learning process. The programme team includes members with research experience and there is an emphasis on research-informed teaching.

How you are assessed

Each module carries an assessed element which is integrated with the learning outcomes of the module and award. It requires a critical appreciation of the subject matter and its implications for practice. 

Your work is assessed through essays, case studies, project work and a final dissertation if you are enrolled on the MSc Autism Practice.

How you learn

You can learn through online distance learning or by attending face-to-face sessions. Equivalent learning and teaching activities are provided for both distance and attendance students although the mode of delivery may vary. You are supported through the use of a virtual learning environment (Blackboard) and other readily available software.

You participate in lectures, seminars, group activities and computer-based workshops such as blogs and webinars. Distance learning students receive recorded lectures and structured open learning materials and are encouraged to participate in online discussion and activities. There are also key points when distance learners must be available via online web technology as part of the assessment framework (a distance learning handbook is provided separately with more details). Skills development is supported through computer-based simulations. Individual tutorial support is available to all students throughout the course.

How you are assessed

You are assessed through a range of methods to provide a variety of learning experiences and to challenge and extend your knowledge. This course builds on your academic skills whilst helping you to develop the clinical competence to practice as a newly graduated occupational therapist. You explore the profession across the breadth of occupational therapy practice, experiencing a number of clinical and practice settings including a non-traditional context. In addition to intervention strategies you gain experience in applying sound clinical reasoning and learn something of the professional role within multidisciplinary and multiagency practice.

Course details

We include a problem-based approach within our learning and teaching, and learning opportunities with students from other professions. By successfully completing this course you are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and membership of the College of Occupational Therapists. This course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council and accredited by the College of Occupational Therapists and World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

Students studying this programme who obtain an NHS bursary can't also apply for a postgraduate loan from the Student Loan Company. From September 2018 funding for this programme will change. The website will be updated once this has been confirmed.

What you study

Year 1 outlines what an occupational therapist is. We consider the world as a place of occupational opportunity and people as occupational beings. Through a series of modules you consider the philosophy of the profession, practice skills and beliefs, and the professional knowledge base required to develop strategies for intervention.

Following two placement experiences you learn to apply the occupational therapy process using evidence from a range of sources. This is supported by input from practice colleagues and service users. You also develop the practical skills needed to demonstrate fitness to purpose. You are encouraged to draw on your placement experience and apply it in your learning. You build on your undergraduate research experience and further explore the research process and its relevance to your interests.

Year 2 helps you understand the professional constructs which determine the scope and viability of occupational therapy. You develop your entrepreneurial and professional skills, and learn about non-traditional or role-emerging practice areas to equip you for an ever-changing workplace. You also start your major project in Year 2, developing academic expertise in your area of research. Your project continues throughout the second year and is submitted in December. You have two more practice placement experiences over the summer.

This well-established, progressive course incorporates biological, social and clinical sciences with health policy and research methods. You take a problem-based approach to learning and share learning with students from other disciplines across the University. 

The course consists of lectures, seminars and practical sessions. We promote teamwork and encourage you to appreciate the many disciplines contributing to healthcare. You are supported through a personal tutor and a range of School and University strategies.

The course includes oral and written assessments, with the opportunity to create scientific posters and demonstrate practical, professional techniques.

Employability

Many employment opportunities exist for graduate occupational therapists in health and social care, schools and voluntary agencies.
